To claim your German pension from the US, file an application with the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV) once you have at least five years of qualifying contributions and have reached your German retirement age. Most US residents do this by walking into any Social Security Administration office with Form SSA-2490; the SSA verifies your documents and forwards the packet to Germany. You can also mail Form V0100 directly to the DRV. Payments then arrive monthly, in euros, in the bank account you designate.
Do You Qualify
Two conditions have to be met before Germany will pay you anything.
The first is the Wartezeit, or minimum waiting period: five years of qualifying contributions. That includes actual employment in Germany and credited time for things like military service, vocational training, or raising children.
The second is age. The standard retirement age is moving up from 65 to 67 depending on your birth year. If you were born in 1964 or later, full retirement age is 67.1Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales. Old-Age Security in Germany
If You Fall Short of Five Years in Germany
Split careers are exactly what the US–Germany totalization agreement is built for. If you contributed to both systems but don’t have five years in either alone, your US Social Security credits can be added to your German credits to get you across the eligibility line.2Social Security Administration. U.S. International Social Security Agreements
One threshold matters here: you need at least 18 months of actual German coverage before US credits can be counted toward eligibility.3Social Security Administration. U.S.-German Social Security Agreement When your combined credits meet the five-year minimum, Germany pays a pension based only on the months you actually contributed there. The US credits open the door; they don’t enlarge the German check.4Social Security Administration. Agreement Between the United States and Germany – Social Security
US nationals who previously worked in Germany may, under certain conditions, make voluntary contributions to close a gap in the five-year minimum or add to a future benefit. What to Gather Before You File
Pulling documents together first will save you months later. You’ll need:
- Your German social security number (Versicherungsnummer), a twelve-digit code on old German pay slips, insurance certificates, or the annual Meldebescheinigung zur Sozialversicherung.
- Form V0100, the main pension application. It asks for personal details, marital status, and a complete employment history with exact start and end dates. Survivor claims need marriage or death certificates attached.
- Form V0120 for supplemental periods like vocational school, unemployment, or university. Parents should also document child-rearing periods, which can add credited time.
- Your IBAN and BIC. A US bank account works.
- A valid passport or government-issued ID. The DRV may also require a notarized Lebens- und Staatsangehörigkeitsbescheinigung (life and citizenship certificate).6Federal Foreign Office. How to Apply for German Pension
All forms download from the DRV website. If your employment history has gaps, explain them on the application. Time spent caring for family members or attending school may count as credited periods and raise your benefit.
A Warning on Notarizing Copies
The DRV usually wants certified copies of ID rather than originals. You can have them certified at a German embassy or consulate, by an honorary consul, or by a US notary public. One caveat matters: copies notarized in California and New York are frequently rejected by German federal agencies, and the German consular missions recommend having certification done at the German consulate serving your state.7Federal Foreign Office. How to File From the United States
You have two practical routes.
Through Your Local Social Security Office
The simplest option for most US residents is to apply at any Social Security Administration office. You complete Form SSA-2490, the Application for Benefits Under a U.S. International Social Security Agreement, which covers German retirement, disability, or survivor benefits.8Social Security Administration. Form SSA-2490-BK – Application for Benefits Under a U.S. International Social Security Agreement The SSA verifies your identity documents and forwards the packet to the DRV. You avoid international mail, and everything moves through an official channel.4Social Security Administration. Agreement Between the United States and Germany – Social Security
Directly to the DRV
You can also mail your application straight to the DRV office that handled your last German contributions. If you don’t know which office that is, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund in Berlin is the central contact point.9Federal Foreign Office. Pension – Contacts The DRV itself recommends that people in a country with a totalization agreement file through their country of residence’s pension agency, which for US residents means SSA.10Deutsche Rentenversicherung. What Happens After You File
The DRV audits your full insurance record, verifies your contribution history, and calculates your benefit. For international claims involving totalization, plan on four to seven months. Complex cases run longer. If the DRV needs more documentation or spots a discrepancy, it will contact you.
When the review is done, you receive a written decision called the Rentenbescheid. It states whether your claim was approved, the monthly amount, and how the figure was calculated. A denial spells out the reasons.11Deutsche Rentenversicherung. Mein Rentenbescheid
If you disagree with the outcome, whether a denial, a lower-than-expected amount, or missing contribution periods, you can file a formal objection (Widerspruch) within one month of receiving the notice. Miss that window and you lose the right to challenge the decision at the administrative level. If the DRV accepts your objection, it issues a corrected decision. If not, you can take the matter to the German social courts.
How the Money Reaches You
Payments are handled by the Renten-Service of Deutsche Post, which distributes German pensions worldwide.12Deutsche Post. Renten Service – Reliable, On-Time Payments of Pensions They arrive monthly, usually at the end of the month, deposited into the account you named on your application.13Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund. Work and Pension in Germany and the United States of America
Your pension is calculated and paid in euros. If your account holds dollars, the deposit will be converted at whatever rate your bank uses. The DRV doesn’t charge banking or transfer fees, but it also doesn’t reimburse fees your bank charges or losses from exchange rate swings.13Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund. Work and Pension in Germany and the United States of America If conversion costs concern you, consider keeping a euro-denominated account.
The Annual Life Certificate
Once a year, the Renten-Service asks pension recipients abroad to submit a Lebensbescheinigung, or life certificate, confirming that you’re still alive and eligible. Since 2024, you can complete it digitally using a QR code included with your annual pension adjustment notice, or send in a paper form. If you go the paper route, the certificate can be signed by a German consulate, a local government office, a financial institution, or another recognized authority.14Federal Foreign Office. Life Certificate – Lebensbescheinigung Missing the deadline can suspend your payments, so treat the yearly request as firm.
US Taxes on Your German Pension
If you live in the US, your German statutory pension is taxable only in the US, not in Germany. Under the US–Germany tax treaty, German social security benefits paid to a US resident are taxed exclusively in the recipient’s country of residence.15Federal Foreign Office. Information on Taxation of German Old Age Pensions The rule has been in place since 2008. If a German statutory pension is your only German income, you generally don’t need to file a German tax return.
How to Report It on Form 1040
The treaty tells the US to treat your German social security pension as if it were US Social Security. In practice, you use the same worksheet in IRS Publication 915 that applies to US Social Security income, then enter the taxable portion on Form 1040, line 6b.16Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Publication 915 Depending on your total income, up to 85% of the benefit can be taxable, following the same rules as domestic Social Security. States handle this income differently; some exempt it, others tax it as ordinary income.
The Windfall Elimination Provision Is Gone
Before 2025, a German pension could reduce your US Social Security through the Windfall Elimination Provision, which adjusted the benefit formula for anyone receiving a pension from work not covered by US Social Security. The Social Security Fairness Act, signed on January 5, 2025, repealed the WEP. The repeal is retroactive to January 2024, so WEP reductions no longer apply to any benefits payable from that month forward. If your US Social Security was previously cut because of your German pension, the SSA has been issuing retroactive payments and adjusted monthly amounts.17Social Security Administration.
