Hertz fine charges are the post-rental fees Hertz can add to your credit card days or weeks after you return the car: tolls, traffic and parking tickets with an administrative surcharge, smoking or cleaning penalties, refueling, late returns, and damage-related bills that go beyond the repair itself. Some are pass-throughs from government agencies. Others are Hertz’s own policy fees. Knowing what triggers each one is the difference between a surprise statement and a return you can plan for.
Traffic Tickets and Parking Violations
You are responsible for every traffic and parking violation that occurs during your rental, whether an officer wrote it or a camera captured it.1Hertz. Am I Responsible for Parking Tickets, Traffic Violations and Tolls Red-light and speed-camera tickets get mailed to Hertz as the registered owner. Hertz matches the violation date to your rental agreement and either forwards your information to the issuing agency or pays the fine and bills you.
Either way, Hertz adds an administrative processing fee on top of the underlying fine.1Hertz. Am I Responsible for Parking Tickets, Traffic Violations and Tolls Hertz doesn’t publish a fixed dollar amount for the fee on its U.S. site, but documented cases have placed it around $40 per incident.
A parking ticket left on the windshield is the one case where you have some control. Pay it directly to the municipality and you can avoid the Hertz admin fee entirely. Ignore it, and the city will eventually reach Hertz, which will then charge your card for the original fine plus whatever late penalties piled up in the meantime.
Tolls and PlatePass
Driving through an electronic toll lane without your own transponder triggers PlatePass, the toll system built into Hertz vehicles. PlatePass reads the plate, pays the toll, and bills you later. You pay the toll authority’s highest undiscounted cash rate, plus a daily convenience fee for each day tolls are incurred.2Hertz. PlatePass
The daily fee is not uniform. At some facilities, it runs $5.95 per calendar day with no cap on total convenience fees for the rental.3Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. Rental Toll Programs Other locations have quoted rates closer to $4.95 per day with a cap around $24.75 per rental. Check before you drive through a plaza without your own transponder.
The All-Inclusive Option
Hertz offers a PlatePass All-Inclusive add-on at the counter, giving you unlimited toll usage for a flat daily rate for the whole rental.2Hertz. PlatePass Hertz describes the rate as “low” but doesn’t publish a figure, so ask when you pick up. For a trip with heavy toll-road driving, it usually beats per-toll billing at cash rates.
New York Congestion Pricing Is Separate
One boundary worth flagging: New York’s congestion pricing zone is not covered by All-Inclusive. Those tolls are billed separately after the rental, at the highest undiscounted rate plus an administrative fee, and can take three weeks or more to hit your statement.2Hertz. PlatePass
Smoking and Cleaning
All Hertz vehicles are nonsmoking. If the return crew finds evidence of smoking, Hertz charges a flat $400 cleaning fee.4Hertz. Rental Rules Vaping counts. Marijuana counts even in states where it’s legal. Once the inspection confirms tobacco odor, ash, or burn marks, the charge stands.
Excessive dirt, sand, pet hair, or food debris can trigger a separate cleaning surcharge. Hertz doesn’t publish a fixed schedule for non-smoking cleaning fees on its U.S. site, so the cost depends on how much detailing the interior needs beyond a basic turnaround. If the car needs more than a quick vacuum and wipe-down, expect something on the bill.
Fuel and EV Charging
Hertz cars leave with a full tank and are expected back with one. Bring it back short and Hertz refuels it at a rate well above local pump prices. Fill up near the return location and this fee never appears.
The Fuel Purchase Option
Hertz offers a Fuel Purchase Option that lets you prepay for a full tank at what the company describes as a rate competitive with local pumps.5Hertz. Fuel Purchase Option You can then return the car at any level without a refueling penalty. There’s no refund for unused fuel, so it only pays off if you plan to return the car close to empty.
Electric Vehicles
EV rentals have their own rules. Return the car at the battery level it had at pickup, though you never need to bring it back above 75%. If you don’t recharge it, Hertz charges you for the difference based on local charging costs plus a service fee. An EV Purchase Option works like the fuel prepay: pay upfront at pickup and return at any level, with no refund for excess charge left in the battery.6Hertz. Do I Need to Return an EV Rental With a Full Charge
Late Returns
Hertz gives a 29-minute grace period. After 30 minutes, additional charges apply. Cross 90 minutes and you’ll typically be billed for a full extra rental day.7Hertz. Early or Late
The trap most people miss: returning to a closed location. If you drop the car after hours, charges keep accruing until staff can process the return when the location reopens.7Hertz. Early or Late A Friday-night drop at a location that’s closed all weekend can cost two extra days. Confirm the location’s hours before you head back.
Damage Charges
If the car is damaged during your rental, Hertz holds you responsible for the full range of financial harm: the repair itself, administrative and processing expenses for evaluating the damage and handling the claim, loss of rental income while the car is out of service, and any reduction in resale value.8Hertz. Accident and Damage
Loss of use is where damage bills get large. Hertz applies the daily rental rate to every day the car sits in the shop. A two-week repair on a car that rents for $60 a day generates an $840 loss-of-use claim before repair costs enter the picture. Hertz doesn’t publish a fixed damage administrative fee, but the processing charge can be substantial in practice. If you’re relying on credit card rental coverage or personal auto insurance, check the policy for loss of use and administrative fees specifically. Many exclude one or both.
When These Charges Hit Your Card
Most of these fees don’t appear on your initial receipt. They post as separate transactions on the card you used to reserve. PlatePass toll charges usually take a few weeks. New York congestion charges can take three or more.2Hertz. PlatePass Traffic and parking tickets can take longer still, because Hertz has to wait for the agency to mail the ticket, match it to your rental, and process the payment.
Updated receipts are available through Hertz’s website and mobile app.9Hertz. Fees and Surcharges Post-rental toll and violation charges generally include the date of the infraction and a breakdown of the underlying charge and admin fee.
How to Dispute a Charge
If a charge looks wrong, move quickly. For toll-related disputes, PlatePass has its own customer service line at 877-411-4300 and email at help@platepass.com.1Hertz. Am I Responsible for Parking Tickets, Traffic Violations and Tolls For everything else, go through the Hertz support hub or call customer service.
Have your documentation ready before you call: the rental agreement, return receipt, any fuel receipts from a gas station near the drop-off, and any photos you took of the vehicle at pickup and return. Smoking fee disputes are hard to win because Hertz treats the inspection crew’s finding as final. Damage disputes have more room, especially if you have pickup photos showing pre-existing marks. The walk-around before you drive off the lot is the single most valuable thing you can do to protect yourself against a charge for damage that wasn’t yours.
