How Long Do Points Stay on Your Licence: 4 or 11 Years

Penalty points stay on your licence for four years for most offences, and for eleven years for drink or drug driving convictions.1GOV.UK. Penalty Points (Endorsements) – How Long Endorsements Stay on Your Driving Record They only count towards a driving ban for the first three of those years, so the window in which points can push you over the totting-up threshold is shorter than the time they remain visible on your record.

Four Years for Most Offences

When a court endorses your driving record with penalty points, the DVLA holds that endorsement electronically for a set period. For everyday motoring offences, that period is four years. Speeding typically carries 3 to 6 points depending on how far over the limit you were, and using a handheld phone while driving now carries 6 points and a £200 fine.2GOV.UK. Using a Phone, Sat Nav or Other Device When Driving Both sit on your record for four years.

When the Four Years Start Running

The start date is not the same for every offence, and this catches drivers out. Standard endorsements like speeding and traffic-sign violations run from the date you committed the offence. More serious four-year endorsements run from the date of conviction instead. That group includes dangerous driving, careless driving that results in disqualification, and driving while disqualified.1GOV.UK. Months can pass between an offence and a court hearing. If your endorsement runs from conviction, those extra months effectively extend how long the points appear on your record.

Eleven Years for Drink and Drug Driving

The longest endorsement period is eleven years, and it applies to a narrow set of offences:

  • Drink driving and drug driving (endorsement codes DR10, DR20, DR30, DR31, DR61 and DR80)
  • Causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs (codes CD40, CD50 and CD60)
  • Causing death by careless driving then failing to provide a specimen for analysis (code CD70)

Every eleven-year endorsement runs from the date of conviction, not the date of the offence.1GOV.UK. Penalty Points (Endorsements) – How Long Endorsements Stay on Your Driving Record Dangerous driving that does not involve alcohol or drugs falls outside this group and carries a four-year endorsement from conviction rather than the eleven-year period.3GOV.UK. The Three-Year Window That Actually Counts

Points sit on your record for four or eleven years, but they only count towards a driving ban for three. This active window runs from offence date to offence date. If you accumulate 12 or more active points within any three-year window, the court must impose a minimum disqualification under the totting-up rules.4Legislation.gov.uk. Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 – Section 35

The minimum ban length depends on your history:

  • No previous disqualification: 6 months
  • One previous disqualification to be taken into account: 12 months
  • More than one previous disqualification: 2 years

Points from offences committed more than three years before the current offence don’t count towards the 12-point threshold, even if they still show on your record.4Legislation.gov.uk. Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 – Section 35 Your record might show 14 points, but if only 9 fall within the three-year window, you are not facing an automatic ban.

New drivers face a much tighter limit. If you passed your test within the last two years, your licence is revoked at 6 points rather than 12, and any unexpired points earned on a provisional licence carry over when you pass.5GOV.UK. Penalty Points (Endorsements) – New Drivers A single handheld phone offence is enough to trigger revocation on its own.

Checking Your Record and Automatic Removal

You can check current endorsements, point totals, and expiry dates through the GOV.UK “View or share your driving licence information” service. You will need your driving licence number, National Insurance number, and the postcode on your licence.6GOV.UK. View or Share Your Driving Licence Information

Once the four-year or eleven-year period has passed, expired endorsements are removed from your record automatically. You do not need to apply or contact the DVLA to trigger this.7GOV.UK. Penalty Points (Endorsements) – Removing Expired Endorsements From Your Driving Record There is no process for requesting early removal of valid endorsements. The only route is to wait out the statutory period.

How Long You Have to Tell Insurers

Endorsements stay on your DVLA record for four or eleven years, but your obligation to disclose them to insurers is set by a different rule. Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, a driving conviction with an endorsement becomes “spent” five years from the date of conviction for adults.8GOV.UK. Rehabilitation Periods Once it is spent, you are not legally required to disclose it, even if it is still visible on your DVLA record.

That creates an overlap for eleven-year endorsements: the conviction can be spent years before the endorsement itself disappears. Employers who ask to see your driving record will still see any endorsement that has not yet expired, which matters most for jobs that involve driving, such as delivery, taxi, or HGV roles.9GOV.UK. Northern Ireland

The rules above cover England, Scotland, and Wales, where the DVLA manages driving records. Northern Ireland runs its own system through the Driver and Vehicle Agency, though endorsements remain on the licence for the same four-year or eleven-year periods.10NI Direct. Penalty Points Guidance If you hold a Northern Ireland licence, you check your record through the DVA rather than the DVLA.
