How Long Does a CCJ Stay on Record: Removal, Set Aside, 6 Years

A County Court Judgment stays on the Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines for six years from the date the judgment was issued. There is one way to avoid that: pay the full amount within one month of the judgment date and the CCJ can be removed from the register entirely. Pay later and it stays visible for the full six years, though it will be marked as satisfied. After six years, it drops off automatically without you having to do anything.1GOV.UK. The six-year clock runs from the date the judgment was entered, not from when you received the claim form and not from when you make a payment. During that period the judgment is visible to anyone who searches the register and to lenders checking your credit file. When the six years are up, the entry is removed from both the register and your credit file. No application, no letter to the court, no notification required.

Paying Within One Month to Get It Removed

If you pay the full judgment amount within one month of the judgment date, you can have the CCJ taken off the register completely. Write to the court with proof of payment from the creditor. Once the court processes it, the judgment is removed from the register and will not appear on your credit file.1GOV.UK. County Court Judgments for Debt – CCJs and Your Credit Rating

Outside of a successful application to set the judgment aside, this is the only way to erase a CCJ from your record. If you can find the money in that first month, even by borrowing from family or drawing on savings, it is generally worth doing.

Paying After One Month: Satisfied but Still Visible

Once the one-month window closes, paying the debt no longer removes the CCJ. It stays on the register for the full six years. What it does do is get the entry marked as “satisfied,” which shows anyone searching the register that the debt has been settled. As with early payment, you write to the court with proof from the creditor.1GOV.UK. County Court Judgments for Debt – CCJs and Your Credit Rating

For official documentation, you can apply for a Certificate of Satisfaction using Form N443. The certificate is proof that the judgment has been paid in full and can help when you apply for credit or a rental agreement.2GOV.UK. Apply for a Certificate to Show You’ve Paid a Court Order – Form N443

A satisfied CCJ is viewed more favourably by lenders than an unsatisfied one. If the first month has passed, getting the judgment marked as satisfied as soon as possible is the next best step. The older a satisfied CCJ gets, the less weight lenders tend to place on it, though this varies from lender to lender.

Getting a CCJ Set Aside

The other route to early removal is applying to the court to have the judgment set aside. You do this by filing an application notice using Form N244.3GOV.UK. County Court Judgments for Debt – Cancel the Judgment

The court will consider setting aside a judgment only in limited circumstances. The usual grounds are that you did not actually owe the money, that you were not properly served with the original claim form, or that you missed the response deadline for a genuine reason and have a real defence to the debt.4GOV.UK. Make an Application to a Court (Application Notice) – Form N244

Success is not guaranteed. You need valid legal grounds and the court charges a fee for the application. If the court agrees to set the judgment aside, it is cancelled and removed from the register. If the underlying debt is still in dispute, the case may then proceed to a full hearing where you can put your defence.

What Six Years on the Record Actually Means

A CCJ on your credit file tells lenders that a court had to order you to pay a debt. That signal carries weight whether the judgment is satisfied or unsatisfied, and it shows up on credit checks run by lenders, landlords, and letting agents for the full six years.

Mortgages are where the impact is felt most sharply. Most high-street lenders decline applicants with an active CCJ, particularly one issued in the past year. Specialist lenders take borrowers with CCJs but charge higher interest rates and generally want larger deposits. An unsatisfied judgment narrows the options further because it suggests the debt is still outstanding.

The knock-on effects extend to personal loans, credit cards, mobile phone contracts, and rental agreements. Even a satisfied CCJ can lead to higher rates or an outright refusal.

How to Check Whether You Have a CCJ

People sometimes learn about a CCJ only after being turned down for credit. Two places will tell you.

One boundary worth flagging: applying to vary the terms of how you pay a CCJ, for example spreading it into affordable instalments, does not change the six-year clock or remove the entry from the register. It only adjusts the monthly amount.9GOV.UK.
