A DBS check usually takes anywhere from a few days to about four weeks, and the level of check is the biggest factor. Basic checks are the quickest, with most completed within 14 days and many arriving in under a week. Standard checks run to a similar timescale. Enhanced checks routinely take two to four weeks, and sometimes longer, because local police forces carry out an extra review after the DBS finishes its own searches.
The DBS aims to process most applications within 14 days, but that target assumes a clean form and no bottlenecks along the way. Real turnaround shifts week to week with application volumes and police workload.
Processing Times by Check Level
Basic checks are the fastest because they only search for unspent convictions and conditional cautions. Most are returned well inside the 14-day target, and a straightforward application with good identity documents can come back in a matter of days.
Standard checks take slightly longer. The search covers both spent and unspent convictions and cautions on the Police National Computer, subject to filtering rules, but the process stays within the DBS itself. The majority are returned in around two weeks.
Enhanced checks are consistently the slowest. After the DBS runs its own database searches, the application is sent to every relevant local police force for an additional review, and where the role involves regulated activity, the Children’s or Adults’ Barred Lists are also checked. Two to four weeks is typical, and Enhanced checks can run considerably longer when a police force is behind.
Why Enhanced Checks Sit With the Police
The local police stage is where most Enhanced delays originate. Every police force area you have lived in that is relevant to the application has to review the request and decide whether to add any information it considers relevant to the role, including material that never led to a conviction. If you have moved around, several forces may be looking at your application in parallel, and the slowest one sets your timeline. Some forces clear these quickly. Others run weeks behind, particularly during busy periods or when major events stretch their resources.
There is nothing an applicant can do to speed up this stage once the application has left the DBS. The practical lever is making sure the application reaches the police cleanly, so no time is lost to queries or rework.
What Slows an Application Down
The single most common reason for a slow DBS check is an error on the form. Misspelled names, an incomplete address history, or identity documents that do not match the details on the application can trigger a manual review or cause the application to be withdrawn entirely, forcing a fresh start.
The DBS specifically warns that failing to declare all previous names, or failing to provide a full five-year address history, can result in “conflicted applications that may be withdrawn.”1GOV.UK. DBS Digital Identity Verification Guidance Getting the form right the first time is by far the biggest thing you control.
Paper applications also take longer than electronic ones because of postal transit and manual data entry at the DBS. If speed matters, submitting electronically through a registered organisation or umbrella body is the better route.
Digital Identity Verification
The DBS now allows identity verification through certified Digital Verification Services. Instead of presenting physical documents to an employer or registered body in person, you upload images of your passport or driving licence through an approved provider and the identity check happens remotely.1GOV.UK. DBS Digital Identity Verification Guidance The required confidence level is “Medium” for a Basic check and “High” for Standard or Enhanced checks. Using this route removes one of the slower steps in the traditional process.
Tracking Your Application
Once your application has been submitted, you can monitor its progress online. For Standard and Enhanced checks, you need your application reference number and date of birth.2Disclosure and Barring Service. Tracking Service The Basic tracking form also asks for your surname. The system shows the stage your application has reached, such as “application received,” “Police National Computer search,” or “certificate issued.”
If your application appears stuck at a particular stage for an extended period, you can contact DBS customer services on 03000 200 190 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).
Where the DBS Applies
These timelines cover the DBS, which operates in England and Wales.3GOV.UK. About the Disclosure and Barring Service Scotland has its own system through Disclosure Scotland, and Northern Ireland uses AccessNI. If you work or volunteer in those nations, you will deal with those services instead, and their processing times are not covered here.
Avoiding the Wait Next Time
If you change jobs frequently or work in a sector where regular checks are expected, the DBS Update Service can save the whole processing wait for future roles. It is an online subscription that costs £16 per year, free for volunteers, and keeps your Standard or Enhanced certificate current so you do not have to apply for a new one each time you move.4GOV.UK. DBS Update Service: Guide for Applicants
There is a hard deadline. You must subscribe within 30 days of your certificate being issued. Miss that window and you will need to apply for an entirely new check before you can join.5GOV.UK. DBS Checks: Guidance for Employers The Update Service is not available for Basic checks.
Once you are subscribed, a prospective employer can run a free, instant online status check instead of waiting weeks for a new certificate. They need to see your original paper certificate first, have your consent, and be entitled to the same level of check for the role.6GOV.UK. DBS Update Service: Employer Guide The status check tells them whether the certificate is still up to date or whether new information means a fresh application is needed.
If the Certificate Arrives With a Mistake
DBS certificates are posted directly to your home address, not to your employer. Check the details as soon as it arrives. If something looks wrong, you have three months from the date on the certificate to raise a dispute. This applies to Standard and Enhanced certificates, not Basic.7GOV.UK. Dispute a Mistake on Your DBS Certificate
For mistakes in your criminal record information, fill in the certificate dispute form and post it to the DBS. For errors in personal details such as your name, you can either complete Section A of the dispute form or call DBS customer services on 03000 200 190. The DBS will work with the relevant police force to investigate. If the police disagree that there is an error and your objection is that the information is irrelevant to the role or should not appear on the certificate, the dispute can be escalated to the Independent Monitor, but only after it has first been raised with the DBS.
A dispute pauses the point at which you have a usable certificate, so the sooner an error is flagged, the sooner it gets resolved.
