How long it takes to get an approval letter depends entirely on what you’ve applied for: a credit card decision can land in minutes, a mortgage pre-approval usually arrives within one to ten business days, an SBA loan can run 60 to 90 days, and a Social Security disability decision generally takes six to eight months. The rest comes down to how complete your application is and whether an automated system or a human reviewer handles your file.
Timelines at a Glance
- Credit card: often instant; up to 30 days if sent to manual review
- Personal loan: same day to one week
- Mortgage pre-approval: 1 to 10 business days
- Mortgage final approval and closing: roughly 42 to 44 days from application
- SBA 7(a) loan: 60 to 90 days; SBA 504 up to six months; SBA Express 36 hours on the SBA’s side plus lender review
- VA disability claim: about 76 days on average as of early 2026
- SSDI initial decision: 6 to 8 months
Mortgage Pre-Approval Letters
A pre-approval letter confirms that a lender has reviewed your credit, income, and debts and is willing to lend up to a stated amount. Most lenders issue one within one to three business days after pulling your credit and reviewing your financial documents, and some turn around straightforward applications the same day.1Chase. How Long Does It Take to Get Mortgage Preapproval Others take longer. Bank of America tells applicants to expect a pre-approval letter within ten business days after providing all requested information.2Bank of America. Two Smart Homebuying Moves: Mortgage Prequalification and Preapproval
To get a Loan Estimate, you only need to provide six pieces of information: your name, income, Social Security number, the property address, an estimated property value, and the desired loan amount.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Can a Lender Make Me Provide Documents Like My W-2 or Pay Stub in Order to Give Me a Loan Estimate A lender cannot require additional documents just to produce that estimate. Submitting pay stubs, tax returns, and bank statements upfront still helps, because it lets the lender give you a more accurate number and often speeds the full pre-approval.
Pre-approval letters don’t last. Most expire after 30 to 60 days, because lenders want reasonably current financial data before backing an offer on a home.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Get a Preapproval Letter If yours lapses before you find a property, you’ll resubmit updated documents and go through the review again. That second pass is usually faster, since the lender already has your file.
Mortgage Final Approval and Closing
A pre-approval is not a loan commitment. Full underwriting, where the lender verifies everything in detail and issues a final commitment letter, typically takes about 42 to 44 days from application to closing. That window covers the appraisal, title search, insurance verification, and final document review.
Federal rules build hard deadlines into that window. Under Regulation Z, your lender must deliver a Loan Estimate no later than three business days after receiving your application.5eCFR. 12 CFR 1026.19 – Certain Mortgage and Variable-Rate Transactions The final Closing Disclosure must arrive at least three business days before your closing date, and at least seven business days must pass between the initial Loan Estimate and closing. These waiting periods give you time to compare costs and catch errors.
Conditional Approval and What Causes Delays
Between pre-approval and final approval, many borrowers hit conditional approval. The underwriter has reviewed your file and will likely approve the loan, but needs you to clear remaining items first: updated bank statements, proof of homeowners insurance, a letter explaining a large recent withdrawal, or gift letters if someone is helping with your down payment. Until every condition is satisfied, no clear-to-close.
Most delays start here. Borrowers who respond slowly to document requests, or who open new credit cards, make large purchases, or switch jobs mid-process, can push the timeline well past 45 days. The underwriter may need to re-verify your finances, which effectively restarts part of the review.
Third-party services are the other common wildcard. An appraisal that comes in below the purchase price forces a renegotiation or a cash gap. A title search that turns up liens or ownership disputes can freeze everything until those are resolved. Even a slow employer verification adds days.
Personal Loans and Credit Cards
Personal loan approvals move faster than mortgages because there’s no property to appraise or title to search. Online lenders frequently approve within one business day and sometimes fund the same day. Traditional banks tend to take a day or two to approve and up to a week to deposit funds, though existing customers often move faster.
Credit card approvals are the quickest. Most online applications generate an instant decision, often within a few minutes. If the automated system can’t make a clear call, your application goes to manual review, which can take up to 30 days. Mail-in applications are slower simply because of transit time. When you’re approved instantly, the issuer usually gives you a digital card number right away, with the physical card arriving in 7 to 10 business days.
SBA and Business Loans
Small Business Administration loans run through both a private lender and the SBA, which means two layers of review. The standard SBA 7(a) loan typically takes 60 to 90 days from application to funding. The SBA 504 loan, used for real estate or major equipment, can stretch to six months because it involves a Certified Development Company as an additional party.
The SBA Express program promises 36 hours on the SBA’s portion of the review, though the lender’s own underwriting adds time on top. During periods of high demand or economic disruption, expect every SBA timeline to run longer than the stated averages.
Government Benefit Approvals
Social Security Disability Insurance
SSDI claims take far longer than any financial product. The Social Security Administration states that initial decisions generally take six to eight months after you submit your application.6Social Security Administration. How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision After I Apply for Disability Benefits That window covers collecting and reviewing medical records, consulting with disability examiners, and sometimes scheduling additional medical evaluations.
Most initial SSDI applications are denied. If yours is, you have 60 days from receiving the decision to request reconsideration.7Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration The SSA assumes you received the notice five days after the date printed on it, so the clock starts from that assumed receipt date. Missing the deadline can dismiss your case unless you can show good cause, such as serious illness or documented mail problems.
VA Disability Claims
Veterans Affairs disability claims have improved. As of early 2026, the VA reports an average processing time of about 76 days.8Veterans Affairs. The VA Claim Process After You File Your Claim Your timeline depends on the type of claim, how many conditions you’re claiming, their complexity, and how long the VA takes to gather supporting evidence. Multiple-condition claims and those needing new medical examinations run longer than the average.
If You’re Denied
A denial doesn’t have to be the end, but act quickly whatever you applied for.
For mortgage and credit applications, federal law requires the lender to send a written notice explaining the action taken. That notice must include the specific reasons for the denial, or at minimum tell you that you have the right to request those reasons within 60 days.9eCFR. 12 CFR 1002.9 – Notifications Vague answers like “you didn’t meet our internal standards” don’t satisfy the law. The lender must identify principal reasons, such as insufficient income, high debt-to-income ratio, or derogatory credit history. The notice must also reference the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and name the federal agency that oversees the lender.
For government benefits, the appeal clock is strict. SSDI gives you 60 days, as noted above. VA claimants can file a supplemental claim with new evidence, request a higher-level review by a senior reviewer, or appeal to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, each with its own timeline.10Veterans Affairs. Supplemental Claims
Whatever the denial, request the specific reasons in writing if they aren’t already there. You can’t fix what you don’t understand, and the letter often shows exactly what documentation or financial change would make the difference on a second attempt.
How to Speed Things Up
The single most effective thing you can do is submit a complete, accurate application the first time. Every missing document, every mismatch between your application and your pay stubs, every unreturned call to verify employment adds days.
- Gather documents before you apply. Two years of tax returns (Form 1040), W-2 or 1099 statements, your two most recent pay stubs, and two months of bank statements cover what almost every mortgage lender will ask for.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Can a Lender Make Me Provide Documents Like My W-2 or Pay Stub in Order to Give Me a Loan Estimate
- Respond to lender requests the same day. When an underwriter asks for a letter of explanation or an updated statement, the clock stops until you deliver.
- Don’t change your financial picture mid-process. Avoid opening new credit accounts, making large purchases, or switching jobs between application and closing. Any of these can trigger fresh verification.
- Shop for homeowners insurance early. Lenders require proof before closing, and arranging it in the final week is a common source of needless delay.
- Alert your employer. Let HR know a lender may call to verify employment and income. A quick callback versus a message in a queue can save days.
For government benefits, the equivalent move is submitting all supporting medical records, service records, or financial documentation with your initial application rather than letting the agency request them piecemeal. Every time an agency has to chase a record from a hospital or a prior employer, that’s another few weeks on your wait.
