How Long Is a CDL Valid For? Renewal, Medical Card, and Hazmat

A Commercial Driver’s License is typically valid for four to eight years, depending on the state that issued it. Federal law leaves the renewal cycle to each state, so how long a CDL is valid for is a question your state’s DMV answers on the card itself. What often matters more than that printed date is your DOT medical certificate, which expires on its own schedule and can shut down your commercial driving privileges long before the license does.

How Long the License Itself Lasts

There is no single federal expiration period. The FMCSA requires every state to run a CDL program that meets federal standards, but each state sets its own renewal cycle within that framework.1eCFR. 49 CFR Part 384 – State Compliance With Commercial Driver’s License Program Most states issue CDLs valid for four, five, or eight years. Your license card shows the exact expiration date, and your state’s DMV website confirms the renewal timeline that applies to you.

One federal cap does apply across the board. Non-domiciled CDLs, issued to drivers by a state other than the one where they live, are limited to one year of validity.2eCFR. 49 CFR Part 383 – Commercial Driver’s License Standards If you move, you generally need to transfer your CDL to your new state rather than continue renewing in the old one, because federal law prohibits holding a license from more than one state at a time.3Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Why the Medical Card Often Expires First

The expiration printed on your CDL is only half of what keeps you legal to drive. Every CDL holder operating in non-excepted commerce must also maintain a valid DOT medical examiner’s certificate, and that certificate almost always expires before the license itself. If the medical card lapses, your state will downgrade or restrict the CDL no matter how many years remain on the plastic.

The medical exam is performed by a certified examiner listed on the FMCSA’s National Registry and covers vision, hearing, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and a range of other fitness factors. Under normal circumstances, the certificate is good for 24 months. Drivers with certain conditions, such as insulin-treated diabetes or vision that doesn’t meet the standard in one eye, may receive a certificate valid for only 12 months and must complete additional evaluations before each renewal.4eCFR. 49 CFR Part 391 – Qualifications of Drivers and Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) Driver Instructors – Subpart E

When you apply for or renew a CDL, you also self-certify to your state which type of driving you do — interstate or intrastate, excepted or non-excepted.5FMCSA. How Do I Determine Which of the 4 Categories of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Operation I Should Self-Certify To Non-excepted drivers must keep a current federal medical card on file with the state licensing agency. Miss that filing after your physical and most states will flag your CDL as “not certified” and eventually downgrade it, stripping your commercial privileges even though the license hasn’t technically expired.

What CDL Renewal Involves

Renewing a CDL means submitting an application to your state’s DMV and paying a renewal fee. Fees vary by state, license class, and endorsements held, so check your DMV for current pricing. Most states require a new photo and a vision screening at renewal, and a current DOT medical certificate is a prerequisite for any renewal in non-excepted categories. If your medical card has lapsed, fix that first; the state will not process the CDL renewal without it.4eCFR. 49 CFR Part 391 – Qualifications of Drivers and Longer Combination Vehicle (LCV) Driver Instructors – Subpart E

If your CDL has been expired or downgraded for more than a year, many states require you to retake both the knowledge and skills exams. A straightforward renewal at the same class with the same endorsements does not trigger Entry-Level Driver Training. If you use the renewal to upgrade class or add a passenger, school bus, or hazmat endorsement for the first time, you must complete an approved ELDT program before testing.6eCFR. 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart F – Entry-Level Driver Training Requirements On and After February 7, 2022 Drivers who already held the class or endorsement before February 7, 2022, are grandfathered.

Active-duty military, reservists, National Guard members, dual-status military technicians, and active-duty Coast Guard members who operate CMVs for military purposes can qualify for a skills test waiver in most states.7Regulations.gov. Commercial Driver’s License Standards; Requirements and Penalties: Applicability to the Exception for Certain Military Personnel Eligibility windows vary, so service members transitioning out should contact their state DMV early.

The Hazmat Endorsement Runs on Its Own Clock

A hazardous materials endorsement expires separately from the license itself. Federal rules generally require HME renewal every five years, though some states tie it to a shorter license renewal cycle.8Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement Each renewal requires fresh fingerprints, a new TSA security threat assessment, and a retake of the hazmat knowledge test. Fingerprinting and background check fees typically run between $40 and $90 depending on the state, on top of any endorsement fees the DMV charges.

The TSA background check can take several weeks, so starting a few months before expiration is worth the effort. Let the endorsement lapse and you cannot haul hazardous materials until the entire process is completed again from scratch.

Ways Your CDL Can End Before Its Expiration Date

Two federal systems can cut a CDL’s life short regardless of the date on the card.

The first is the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Every CDL holder’s drug and alcohol testing history has been stored in this federal database since January 2020, and a violation — a positive drug test, an alcohol test at 0.04 or above, or a refusal to test — places you in “prohibited” status.9FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse Return-to-Duty Process Summary As of November 18, 2024, the Clearinghouse is linked to state licensing systems, so a prohibited status now triggers CDL downgrade or denial at the state level, not just an employer refusal to hire. Getting back to “not prohibited” status requires a return-to-duty process under 49 CFR Part 40 that begins with a Substance Abuse Professional evaluation and ends only after a negative return-to-duty test and follow-up testing.

The second is disqualification for traffic and criminal offenses. Federal regulations set minimum disqualification periods every state must enforce.10eCFR. 49 CFR 383.51 – Disqualification of Drivers Two serious traffic violations within three years — speeding 15 mph or more over the limit, reckless driving, improper lane changes, following too closely, or operating a CMV without a valid CDL in your possession — trigger a 60-day disqualification. A first major offense such as DUI, refusing a chemical test, leaving the scene of an accident, or using a CMV to commit a felony results in a one-year disqualification. A second major offense means lifetime disqualification, with limited reinstatement possible after 10 years and a state-approved rehabilitation program.

What Happens If You Drive on an Expired CDL

Operating a commercial vehicle after your CDL has expired or been downgraded counts as driving without a valid CDL, a serious traffic violation under federal regulations. A single instance won’t trigger a disqualification on its own, but a second serious violation of any type within three years will. Employers carry their own exposure: federal rules prohibit a motor carrier from knowingly allowing a driver without valid commercial credentials to operate a CMV.

The practical stakes are higher than the ticket. Most insurance policies exclude coverage when the driver lacks a valid license, which means an accident with an expired CDL could leave both driver and carrier on the hook for the full cost of damages. If your CDL is approaching expiration while you’re between jobs, renew it before it lapses. Timely renewal costs far less than retaking skills and knowledge tests after a prolonged lapse, and considerably less than being stopped on the road without valid credentials.
