A Mexican passport costs between $920 and $4,280 Mexican pesos when you apply inside Mexico, and between $44 and $272 U.S. dollars when you apply at a Mexican consulate abroad. The exact price depends on how many years of validity you choose, whether your consulate charges the emergency rate as its standard, and whether you qualify for the 50% discount. Fees are set by the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) and updated every January.
Passport Fees Inside Mexico
As of January 1, 2026, the standard fees for an ordinary passport issued in Mexico are:
- One year: $920 MXN (only available to children under three)
- Three years: $1,795 MXN
- Six years: $2,440 MXN
- Ten years: $4,280 MXN (adults only)
The ten-year passport gives you the best per-year value, but you have to be at least 18 to get one. Minors between 3 and 17 are limited to the three-year or six-year options, and children under three can only receive a one-year or three-year passport.1Gobierno de México. Pasaporte Mexicano
Passport Fees at a Consulate Abroad
Mexican citizens living outside the country apply through embassies and consulates, where fees are charged in U.S. dollars. The base 2026 fees for an ordinary passport at a consular office are:
- One year: $44 USD
- Three years: $101 USD
- Six years: $137 USD
- Ten years: $209 USD
Those are the base numbers.2Embassy of Mexico in Hungary. Table of Rights in Dollars 2026 At many consulates, including those in the United States, passports are printed on-site rather than in Mexico City, and the emergency processing rate is charged as the standard fee. The Atlanta consulate, for example, posts 2026 prices of $57 for one year, $131 for three years, $178 for six years, and $272 for ten years.3Consulado de México en Atlanta. U.S. consulates typically accept cash in dollars and most major credit and debit cards. Some do not accept $100 bills, personal checks, or American Express, so carry a backup form of payment.
Who Pays Half Price
Three groups qualify for a 50% discount on the passport fee, both in Mexico and at consulates:
- Adults over 60, with a valid official ID showing date of birth.
- People with a permanent disability, with a medical certificate from a public health institution.
- Agricultural workers in the Mexico-Canada program, with an employment letter from the Secretaría del Trabajo y Previsión Social. This one applies only to three-year and six-year passports.
With the discount, 2026 fees in Mexico drop to $460 MXN for one year, $900 MXN for three years, $1,220 MXN for six years, and $2,140 MXN for ten years.1Gobierno de México. Emergency Processing Costs 30% More
If you need your passport issued urgently, the SRE adds a 30% surcharge to the standard fee. For consular applications in 2026, the emergency rates in dollars are $57 (one year), $131 (three years), $178 (six years), and $272 (ten years).
The 50% discount and the emergency surcharge can stack. A qualifying senior who needs an emergency six-year passport at a consulate pays $86.50 instead of the full $178.2Embassy of Mexico in Hungary. Table of Rights in Dollars 2026
Lost or Stolen Passport Replacement
Replacing a lost or stolen passport does not appear to carry an extra surcharge beyond the standard fee for the new document. What it does carry is more paperwork. You file a police report (in Mexico, an acta with the local ministerial authority; abroad, with the local police), then complete a form from the passport office or consulate explaining the loss. From there you apply as though it were a first-time passport, with the same document requirements.1Gobierno de México. Pasaporte Mexicano
How to Pay the Fee
Inside Mexico, you pay before your appointment. Download the payment worksheet (Hoja de Ayuda para el Pago en Ventanilla Bancaria) from the SRE website, fill in your CURP, full legal name, chosen validity period, and the fee amount, then take the completed form to any authorized bank. The teller processes the payment and stamps your receipt, which you bring to your passport appointment. Without the stamped receipt, you will not be seen.4Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores. Opciones para Realizar el Pago de Pasaporte
If you have an account at a participating bank, you can pay through online banking instead. Look for the federal fee payment section (Pago de Derechos Federales), select the SRE passport option, and enter the same details from the worksheet. Print the digital confirmation and bring it with you. Your name and CURP must match your birth certificate or official ID exactly. A small typo can delay your application or force you to request a refund, which takes time.
