How to Apply for an India Visa as a US Citizen

Every US citizen needs a visa before entering India, and there is no visa-on-arrival option. To apply for an India visa as a US citizen, you have two paths: an electronic visa (e-Visa) filed on the Indian government portal for tourism, business, medical, or conference visits, or a paper visa submitted through VFS Global for longer stays, employment, study, journalism, research, or the ten-year multiple-entry tourist visa that only US passport holders can get.1Embassy of India, Washington D C, USA. Restoration of Valid Long Duration (10 Years) Regular (Paper) Tourist Visas Which route fits depends on how long you plan to stay, what you’ll do while you’re there, and where you plan to fly in.

E-Visa or Paper Visa

The e-Visa is handled entirely online and results in an Electronic Travel Authorization emailed to you. It comes in 30-day, one-year, and five-year versions; the one-year and five-year versions allow multiple entries.2Consulate General of India, New York (USA). E-Visa It covers tourism, business meetings, medical treatment, and attendance at certain conferences.

There is one important catch. E-Visa holders can enter India only through 31 designated international airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Goa, Jaipur, and Varanasi.3Embassy of India, Astana. Designated Airports for Entry of Persons Holding E-Visa If you’re flying into a smaller regional airport or crossing a land border, you need a paper visa.

Paper visas require you to submit your physical passport to a VFS Global processing center, where a consular officer stamps the visa into the passport itself.4Embassy of India, Washington D C, USA. Public Notice on Visa Outsourcing to VFS There is no port-of-entry restriction. Employment, student, research, journalist, and missionary visas are all paper-only, as is the ten-year multiple-entry tourist visa that US citizens uniquely qualify for.5Embassy of India, Washington D C, USA. Updated Advisory on Tourist Visas If you travel to India often, that ten-year visa is worth the extra effort.

Which Visa Category to Pick

Picking the wrong category means automatic rejection and lost fees. These are the categories US travelers use most:

  • Tourist (e-Tourist or paper): Sightseeing, visiting friends and family, yoga programs, casual cultural activities. Total time in India on any combination of tourist visas cannot exceed 180 days in a calendar year.6Consulate General of India, San Francisco, USA. Visa Guidelines for USA Passport Holder
  • Business (e-Business or paper): Meetings, trade fairs, exploring commercial ventures. A business visa does not allow full-time employment.7Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. FAQs Relating to Work Related Visas Issued by India
  • Employment: Required if you’re working for an Indian company on a contract or salaried basis. You must earn at least $25,000 per year, with narrow exceptions for ethnic cooks and certain language teachers.7Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. FAQs Relating to Work Related Visas Issued by India
  • Medical (e-Medical or paper): Treatment at an Indian hospital. A companion can apply separately under the e-Medical Attendant category.
  • Student and Research: Academic study or research projects at Indian institutions. Both are paper-only.
  • Conference: Available as an e-Visa for attending government-sponsored or government-affiliated conferences.

The line between business and employment trips up plenty of applicants. If an Indian company is paying you, you need an employment visa, no matter how short the assignment. Doing paid work on a business visa can result in deportation and a future entry ban.

Documents and Photo Requirements

Your US passport must have at least six months of validity remaining from your planned arrival date and at least two blank pages for stamps.8Embassy of India, Washington D C, USA. E-Visa This applies to both e-Visa and paper visa applications. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before you start.

The online form asks for more personal background than most travelers expect. Be ready to provide:

  • Full names and birthplaces of both parents and your spouse, whether or not they’re traveling with you.
  • Countries visited in the last ten years, plus details of any prior trips to India.
  • A contact name, address, and phone number for a reference in India. A hotel or tour operator works.
  • A secondary contact in the US for emergency purposes.
  • Any second citizenship you hold; you must disclose both passports.

Photo Specifications

The digital photo requirements trip up a surprising number of applicants. It must be a square JPEG with equal height and width, on a plain white or light-colored background, with no shadows on the face or behind you, and a file size between 10 KB and 300 KB.9High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur. Online Visa Photo Upload Process Dark or tinted glasses are not allowed. Religious head coverings are fine as long as your full face is visible from chin to forehead. Neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed.10VFS Global. Photo Specifications

You also need a PDF scan of your passport’s bio page, sized between 10 KB and 300 KB, with no glare or obstruction over the text. A phone scan in even light usually works.

Applying for a Child

If you’re applying for a minor, a notarized parental authorization form signed by both parents is mandatory, along with copies of both parents’ passports and a marriage certificate.11Consulate General of India, New York (USA). Visa Guidelines for USA Passport Holders If one parent is deceased or absent, expect to provide a court order or sole custody documentation. Get the notarization done before starting the online form.

Yellow Fever Certificate

If you’re arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country within the previous six days, you must carry a valid vaccination certificate.12Consulate General of India, Auckland. Vaccination Requirement Before Entering Into India Direct flights from the US don’t trigger this, but routings through parts of sub-Saharan Africa or South America might. Without the certificate, you can be quarantined or refused entry.

Applying for an E-Visa

The whole process runs on the Indian government’s e-Visa portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Fill out the form, upload your photo and passport scan, pay the fee online with a debit or credit card, and wait for the Electronic Travel Authorization to arrive by email. The system generates an Application ID that lets you save your progress and return.

Apply no earlier than 120 days and no later than four days before your planned travel date. In practice, applying at least two weeks out is safer. The portal experiences backlogs during peak travel season from October through March, and a delay past your departure leaves no recourse. Once approved, print the ETA to carry with you. Airlines check it before boarding, and immigration officers verify it on arrival.

Applying for a Paper Visa

Paper visas start on the same online portal, but the path diverges after the form is complete. The portal generates the completed application, which you then submit through VFS Global, the private contractor handling document collection for Indian consulates in the US.4Embassy of India, Washington D C, USA. Public Notice on Visa Outsourcing to VFS You can mail your passport and documents to the VFS center covering your consular jurisdiction or book an in-person appointment.

Your physical passport stays with VFS and the consulate until the visa is stamped and returned. If you have other international travel coming up, plan around that gap. Most applicants pay for VFS’s courier return to get the passport back faster. A $3.00 Indian Community Welfare Fund charge is added to every paper visa application on top of the visa fee and VFS’s service fee.13Consulate General of India, Chicago, USA. Apply Indian Visa

Fees and Processing Times

E-Visa fees for US citizens vary by duration and season:

  • 30-day e-Tourist (April through June): $10
  • 30-day e-Tourist (July through March): $25
  • One-year e-Tourist: $40
  • Five-year e-Tourist: $80

A 2.5% bank transaction fee is added on top.2Consulate General of India, New York (USA). E-Visa

Paper visa fees are higher and vary by category:

  • Student or Research: $100 for the duration of the course or up to five years
  • Medical (up to six months): $100
  • Entry visa (up to six months): $100
  • Entry visa (six months to one year): $140
  • Business (up to ten years): $160
  • Employment (six months to five years): $220
  • Entry visa (one to five years): $220

These figures don’t include the $3.00 community welfare charge or VFS’s service and courier fees.14Embassy of India, Washington D C, USA. Visa Fees All fees are non-refundable, even on denial.

E-Visa processing typically runs three to five business days, though peak-season delays are common. Paper visa processing is slower and less predictable. Budget at least two to three weeks, and longer for employment or research visas that need additional ministry clearance.

If You Have Indian Roots: The OCI Alternative

If you were born in India, previously held Indian citizenship, or are the child or grandchild of someone who was an Indian citizen on or after January 26, 1950, you may qualify for an Overseas Citizen of India card instead of applying for visas over and over. The OCI card gives you lifelong multiple-entry authorization with no cap on the length of each stay, and it exempts you from local police registration no matter how long you remain.15Consulate General of India, Seattle. FAQ on OCI Related Matters People whose ancestry traces to Pakistan, Bangladesh, or certain other countries are not eligible.

The upfront cost is higher than a single visa, but for anyone who visits India more than once every few years, it pays for itself quickly. OCI holders still cannot vote in Indian elections or hold government office, and they still need a Protected Area Permit to visit restricted regions.

After You Arrive

At the immigration counter, have your printed ETA ready if you’re on an e-Visa, or your stamped passport if you’re on a paper visa. The officer verifies your identity, confirms visa type and validity, and stamps your entry.

The 180-day-per-calendar-year cap on tourist visa stays is cumulative across all trips in a given year, whether you’re on an e-Tourist visa, a paper tourist visa, or both.6Consulate General of India, San Francisco, USA. Visa Guidelines for USA Passport Holder If you spent 120 days in India between January and June, you have only 60 more for the rest of that calendar year, even if your five-year visa is still valid.

Registration for Longer Stays

If you’re in India on an employment, student, research, medical, or missionary visa that exceeds 180 days, you must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office within 14 days of arrival.16Ministry of Home Affairs. Regulations Applicable to Foreigners in India – Registration of Foreigners Business visa holders trigger the same requirement once total time in India exceeds 180 days in a calendar year. Registration runs through the e-FRRO online portal and requires your passport, visa, proof of residence in India, and photos. Employment and business applicants also need an undertaking letter from the sponsoring Indian company.17Ministry of External Affairs. Checklist for FRRO Registration Formalities Skipping registration can bring fines, deportation, or trouble getting future Indian visas.

Restricted and Protected Areas

Several regions are off-limits to foreign nationals without a special permit even if you already hold a valid visa. Protected Areas include all of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim, along with border zones in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Sikkim are Restricted Areas with a separate permit.18Ministry of Home Affairs. Protected and Restricted Areas Apply for a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit through the Indian embassy or consulate at the same time as your visa, or through the FRRO once you’re in India. Some permits need Ministry of Home Affairs clearance, which adds time.

Overstaying

Overstay penalties for non-minority foreign nationals start at $300 for stays of up to 90 days past expiration and rise to $500 for overstays longer than two years. Indian authorities can also detain, deport, and ban future entry for anyone who significantly overstays or violates visa terms.19Ministry of Home Affairs. Annex III – Visa Details and Procedures Even a few days past your authorized stay create problems, because immigration officers flag overstays in the system and future visa applications reference that record. If your stay will exceed your visa’s allowed duration, contact the nearest FRRO office before the expiration date to request an extension.
