To apply for Greek citizenship by descent, you gather documents proving an unbroken line from a Greek ancestor who was registered in a Greek municipality down to you, submit that file to the Greek consulate covering your area of residence (or directly to a municipality if you’re in Greece), and then register in that municipality before applying for a passport. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs is explicit that the state is not granting you anything new: consular authorities help you exercise a right that has been yours since birth under the principle of jus sanguinis.1Hellenic Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Who Can Claim Citizenship Through Descent
Under Article 1 of the Greek Citizenship Code (Law 3284/2004), a child born to a Greek father or Greek mother acquires Greek citizenship automatically at birth, regardless of where the birth takes place.2Legislationline. Citizenship Law of Greece The right does not lapse if your parent never documented it. If your grandparent emigrated and never registered your parent’s birth with Greek authorities, your parent was still born Greek under Greek law. You can work backward through the generations, registering each ancestor in sequence until you reach yourself.
Two date thresholds change what you have to do:
- Born before July 16, 1982, to a Greek father and non-Greek mother: your parents had to be legally married for citizenship to pass. Children born outside marriage had to be formally legitimated.3Global Citizenship Observatory. Greek Citizenship Code – Article 14
- Born before May 8, 1984, to a Greek mother: citizenship did not pass automatically. You can still claim it, but you must file a declaration of intent with a Greek consul or regional authority stating that you wish to be recognized as Greek.3Global Citizenship Observatory. Greek Citizenship Code – Article 14
- Born on or after May 8, 1984: citizenship passes equally through either parent, married or not.
For children born to a Greek father outside marriage, formal acknowledgment of paternity confers citizenship from the date of acknowledgment.4Hellenic Ministry of Interior. Paternal Acknowledgments
One boundary worth naming: this article is about people whose ancestors were registered Greek citizens. If your family is of Greek ethnic origin but was never registered—common among some diaspora communities—your route is naturalization under Article 10, not recognition, and the requirements and process differ.
Documents That Prove the Chain
The Hellenic Ministry of Interior calls the descent path “designation or assertion of citizenship” and asks for two things: proof that your ancestor was registered in Greek municipal records, and documents proving your relationship to that ancestor.5Hellenic Ministry of Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen In practice, the file contains:
- Your birth certificate.
- A valid passport or national ID.
- Birth, marriage, and death certificates for every person in the direct line between you and your Greek ancestor.
- Your parents’ marriage certificate. This matters especially for births before 1984.
- Proof of your ancestor’s Greek citizenship. This is usually the hardest piece. An old Greek passport, a military service record, or an entry in a Greek municipal register (demotologio) or male register (mitroo arrenon) will establish it. If records were destroyed or lost, you may need a researcher to search Greek municipal or church archives.
Gaps are the single biggest reason cases stall. Every missing vital record between you and your Greek ancestor has to be found, ordered, or reconstructed before the file can move.
Apostille and Certified Translation
Every document issued outside Greece must carry an Apostille, the standardized certificate that authenticates public documents under the 1961 Hague Convention.6HCCH. HCCH Apostille Section In the United States, Apostilles are issued by the Secretary of State of the state where the document was issued, typically costing between $10 and $26.
Get the Apostille on the original document first. Then have both the document and its Apostille translated into Greek by a certified translator. Translation fees for English-to-Greek official documents generally run $20 to $95 per page. Doing this out of order—translating first and then trying to apostille the translation—creates rework.
Where to Submit and What It Costs
If you live outside Greece, you submit at the Greek consulate or embassy that covers your area of residence. If you live in Greece, you can submit directly to the relevant municipality or regional authority. Expect an in-person appointment either way.
The Hellenic Ministry of Interior lists a recognition fee of around €100.5Hellenic Ministry of Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen Some consulates also charge for signature authentication—roughly €10 for Greek or EU citizens and €30 for non-EU citizens. The government fee is often the smallest line item. Apostilles, certified translations, and vital records ordered from multiple jurisdictions can push the real out-of-pocket cost for a multi-generational claim into several hundred euros before anyone touches your application.
How Long Recognition Takes
Straightforward parent-based claims with clean documentation move fastest. Claims running through a grandparent or great-grandparent take longer because each intermediate generation has to be registered first. The Hellenic Ministry of Interior indicates that in practice, cases take one to four years depending on the category.5Hellenic Ministry of Interior. How Can I Become a Greek Citizen Any request from Greek authorities for additional information or clarification during review resets the clock.
Registering in a Municipality
Approval of your claim is not the end. Registration in the records of a Greek municipality is what formally establishes citizenship for practical purposes, and it is the prerequisite for a passport.1Hellenic Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Greek Citizenship For adults registering for the first time, the municipality asks for a birth certificate, proof of the parents’ existing municipal registration, and a marriage certificate if applicable. The Greek government estimates initial adult registration takes about 50 days.7National Registry of Administrative Public Services. Initial Registration of an Adult in the Municipal Register
Applying for the Greek Passport
Once you are on the municipal register, you can apply for a passport at a consulate abroad or a passport office in Greece. You will need a valid Greek identity card or digital identity and a recent color photograph taken within the last six months, and you will provide fingerprints and other biometric data at the appointment. A standard 10-year adult passport costs €80.8Hellenic Republic. Supporting Documents Applications lodged at a consulate abroad take longer than domestic ones because the file and biometrics must travel to Greece for processing. There is no routine expedited service; urgent processing is reserved for exceptional circumstances.
What Comes With the Passport
Dual Citizenship
Greece permits dual and multiple citizenships. Acquiring Greek citizenship does not require you to give up your existing nationality, and Greece will not strip your Greek citizenship because you hold another passport. A Greek citizen who naturalizes elsewhere remains Greek unless they specifically request release from Greek citizenship through the Ministry of Interior.
Military Service for Male Citizens
Greek law requires all male citizens between 19 and 45 to perform military service.9U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Greece. Greek Military Obligations If you have lived abroad your whole life, you are not automatically called up, but the obligation exists on paper and can create problems at the border or when renewing a passport.
Exemptions are available for men who have lived permanently abroad for at least 11 consecutive years, or who worked abroad for at least seven consecutive years.9U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Greece. Greek Military Obligations You document this by obtaining a Certificate of Permanent Residence Abroad through a Greek consulate, backed by employment records, bank statements, and proof of foreign residence.10Hellenic Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Certificate of Residence Abroad (Military Use) If you plan to relocate to Greece, address the obligation before you go.
Tax Residency, Not Citizenship
Becoming a Greek citizen while continuing to live abroad does not trigger Greek tax obligations. Greece taxes based on residency, not citizenship. If you are not a Greek tax resident, you owe Greek tax only on income from Greek sources, such as rent from Greek property.11Hellenic Republic Independent Authority for Public Revenue. You become a Greek tax resident if you maintain your permanent or principal residence in Greece, if Greece is the center of your personal and economic life, or if you spend more than 183 days in Greece in any twelve-month period. EU Rights
A Greek passport is an EU passport. You can live and work in any of the 27 EU member states without a visa or work permit. You can stay in another EU country for up to three months with just your passport or ID card, and remain indefinitely if you are employed, self-employed, or have sufficient resources and health insurance.12Gov.gr.
