How to Apply for International Driving License in Malaysia

To apply for an International Driving License in Malaysia, visit any JPJ (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan) state or branch office with your MyKad, your Competent Driving License, and a passport-sized photo, then pay the RM150 fee for one year of validity.1Road Transport Department Malaysia. International Driving Permit Application The document JPJ issues is technically called an International Driving Permit (IDP), and it works as a translation of your Malaysian license so overseas authorities and rental agencies can read what you’re licensed to drive. It has no legal effect on its own. You must carry your original Malaysian license alongside it whenever you drive abroad.

Who Can Apply

You need a valid Competent Driving License (CDL) with more than one year of validity remaining on the day you apply.1Road Transport Department Malaysia. Probationary (P-plate) license holders are not eligible. JPJ issues the IDP only to full CDL holders.2Road Transport Department Malaysia. FAQ Driving If you’re still on probation, you’ll need to complete that period and upgrade before applying.

If you can’t attend in person, JPJ allows a representative to submit the application for you. The representative must bring your original identification documents alongside the standard application materials.1Road Transport Department Malaysia. International Driving Permit Application

Documents to Bring

  • Your original MyKad plus a photocopy
  • Your original Competent Driving License
  • One recent passport-sized color photo

Where to Apply and What Happens at the Counter

Applications are accepted at any JPJ state or branch office nationwide.1Road Transport Department Malaysia. International Driving Permit Application The Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) also processes IDPs at its offices, which usually have shorter queues but fewer locations.

There is no online option. You have to walk in. At the office, take a queue number for the driving license counter, hand over your documents for verification, and pay after the officer confirms everything is in order. Processing time varies. Some applicants leave the same day with the IDP in hand; others are told to come back within one to two working days. Weekday mornings are your best bet.

Fees and Validity

The application fee is RM150, and the permit is valid for one year.3Road Transport Department Malaysia. Driving License Transaction Fee Rate A small administrative charge may apply on top, so budget roughly RM160 to RM180. Photos or photocopies done at the office typically add another RM10 to RM15.

Renewal is the same process at the same price.4JPJ.MY. International Driving Permit Because the IDP cannot outlast your CDL, check your CDL’s expiry first. If your CDL has only eight months left, renew the CDL before applying so you get the full year of IDP coverage.

Using the Permit Abroad

Carry both your original Malaysian CDL and the IDP whenever you drive overseas. Without the CDL beside it, the IDP is legally worthless.

Malaysia issues its IDP under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, which has 103 state parties.5United Nations Treaty Collection. Convention on Road Traffic Not every country accepts a Geneva Convention permit. Some recognize only the separate 1968 Vienna Convention IDP, which Malaysia does not issue. Vietnam is a common example: Vietnamese police and rental agencies typically require a Vienna Convention IDP, so a Malaysian one usually won’t work there.

Check with the embassy or consulate of your destination before you travel, and remember that rental agencies can be stricter than local traffic police. The IDP also doesn’t override local traffic laws. If your destination requires a fire extinguisher in the car, a nationality sticker, or daytime headlights, you comply regardless of what the permit says.

Common Mistakes

The most frequent reason applications get rejected is a CDL with less than one year of validity left. Even if your license isn’t expired, JPJ will turn you away if it’s too close to expiring.1Road Transport Department Malaysia. International Driving Permit Application Renew the CDL first, then come back for the IDP.

The other common mistake is treating the IDP as a standalone license or as something that trumps local rules. It’s neither. It identifies you as a licensed Malaysian driver in a form foreign officials can read, and that is the full extent of what it does.
