To apply in a points-based immigration system, you score yourself against the target country’s grid, gather documents that prove each claimed point, and submit a country-specific application with the corresponding fees. Only three major English-speaking destinations actually run one: the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. The United States does not, though merit-based proposals have surfaced in Congress without being enacted. The mechanics differ enough that a strategy for one country will not carry over to another, so the first real decision is which system you’re applying under.
Score Yourself Before You Do Anything Else
Every points-based system measures roughly the same human capital factors: age, education, language proficiency, and skilled work experience. Some also award points for a job offer, a spouse’s qualifications, or ties to a specific region.
Age scoring rewards applicants in their late twenties and early thirties. Australia awards the maximum 30 age points to applicants aged 25 to 32, drops to 15 points for those aged 40 to 44, and excludes anyone 45 or older entirely.1Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. Points Table for Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) Canada’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) awards up to 110 age points for a single applicant, decreasing with age.2Government of Canada. Express Entry – Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria The UK’s Skilled Worker route does not score age.
Education points climb with degree level. A doctorate typically earns the maximum, then a master’s, then a bachelor’s. Canada gives bonus points for a Canadian credential, and Australia gives extra credit for a research-based Australian master’s or PhD in a STEM field.1Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. Points Table for Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
Work experience rewards both duration and location. Local experience counts for more than the same job done abroad. Canada’s CRS awards up to 80 points for Canadian work experience for a single applicant (70 if you have a spouse), with foreign experience scored separately.2Government of Canada. Express Entry – Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria Australia awards up to 20 combined points for skilled work in the past ten years.1Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. Once you have a rough number, you can measure it against the pass mark each country uses, which is where the systems diverge sharply.
Applying to the UK Skilled Worker Route
The UK sets an exact target: you need 70 points, made up of 50 from mandatory criteria plus 20 from tradeable characteristics.3GOV.UK. The UK’s Points-Based Immigration System – An Introduction for Employers
The 50 mandatory points come from three requirements that cannot be substituted: a job offer from a Home Office licensed sponsor (20 points), the role being at the appropriate skill level, generally RQF Level 6 or above (20 points), and English at B2 level (10 points). The B2 threshold applies from January 2026, raised from the previous B1 requirement, and can be met through an approved test or a degree taught in English.4GOV.UK. English Language Requirement Levels for Immigration Applications
The remaining 20 tradeable points come from salary, qualifications, or occupation. The standard route awards all 20 when your salary meets or exceeds £41,700 per year and the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher.5GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Your Job If your salary falls below that, you can still qualify at a reduced minimum of £33,400 when your role appears on the Immigration Salary List or you hold a relevant PhD.6GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Immigration Salary List
A common misconception: you cannot trade your way out of the mandatory 50. No salary level or qualification compensates for lacking a sponsor or failing the language requirement. The going rate is also role-specific; if your occupation’s going rate exceeds £41,700, that higher figure is your target.
Applying to Canada’s Express Entry
Canada does not use a fixed pass mark. You submit an Express Entry profile, receive a CRS score out of 1,200, and wait to be invited to apply for permanent residency in one of the periodic draws that select the top-ranked candidates.
Core human capital factors give a single applicant up to 500 points: 110 for age, 150 for education, 160 for official language ability in English or French, and 80 for Canadian work experience.2Government of Canada. Express Entry – Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria Applicants with a spouse have slightly lower individual maximums (460 for core factors) because the partner earns points too.
Cutoff scores move with each draw. Recent category-based draws in early 2026 have set minimums around 393 for French-language proficiency draws, while general and occupation-specific draws vary more widely.7Government of Canada. Express Entry – Rounds of Invitations Candidates with strong language scores, a master’s degree or higher, and several years of skilled work experience generally clear the threshold. Those with only a bachelor’s and limited experience often need a provincial nomination, worth 600 additional points, to receive an invitation.
Without a valid Canadian job offer, you must also show proof of settlement funds. For a single applicant, the current minimum is CAD $15,263. A family of four needs CAD $28,362. These figures are updated annually.8Government of Canada. Documents for Express Entry – Proof of Funds
Applying to Australia’s Skilled Migration Program
Australia’s Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) both use a points test with a minimum pass mark of 65. In practice, invitations go to the highest scorers first, so clearing 65 is a floor, not a target.
Age brackets are firm. Maximum points (30) go to applicants aged 25 to 32. Those 18 to 24 or 33 to 39 get 25. The 40 to 44 bracket drops to 15. Anyone 45 or older receives none.1Australian Government Department of Home Affairs. Points Table for Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
Language is scored in tiers. Competent English (roughly IELTS 6.0 across all bands) meets eligibility but earns zero bonus points. Proficient English (IELTS 7.0 in each band) adds 10 points. Superior English (IELTS 8.0 in each band) adds 20. That jump matters for applicants near the invitation cutoff, so language preparation carries more weight here than in either the UK or Canada.
You can also earn points for state or territory nomination (5 for subclass 190, 15 for the regional subclass 491), a partner’s skills and English, and specialized credentials such as an accredited community language qualification or completion of a professional year program.
Documents You Will Need
The documentation burden is heavy in all three systems. Start gathering documents three to six months before you plan to submit.
Educational Credential Assessment
Foreign degrees need formal evaluation. In Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment is mandatory and must come from one of five designated organizations (such as World Education Services or the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada) or, for regulated professions like medicine and architecture, the relevant professional body.9Government of Canada. Educational Credential Assessment In the United States, evaluation is handled by private organizations for a fee, since the U.S. Department of Education does not evaluate foreign credentials itself.10U.S. Department of Education. Recognition of Foreign Qualifications Expect to pay roughly $100 to $450 for a course-by-course report, with several weeks of processing.
Language Test
Each country has an approved list. The UK accepts approved Secure English Language Tests at B2 or higher.4GOV.UK. English Language Requirement Levels for Immigration Applications Canada accepts IELTS General Training and CELPIP for English, or TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. Australia accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, and several others. Results must be current when your application is assessed; expired scores are rejected, so check the validity window before you book.
Occupation Code and Employment References
Every system requires you to classify your job under a national occupation code. The UK uses its Standard Occupational Classification, Canada uses the National Occupational Classification, and Australia uses ANZSCO. Choosing the wrong code is one of the most common reasons for refusal. The code must match both your job title and your actual duties, and officers compare your reference letters against the code’s official description. Letters should be on company letterhead and specify title, responsibilities, hours, and dates of employment.
Financial Evidence
Canada requires proof-of-funds bank statements at the settlement amounts noted earlier unless you already have a valid Canadian job offer.8Government of Canada. Documents for Express Entry – Proof of Funds UK Skilled Worker applicants must hold a specified level of maintenance funds for at least 28 consecutive days, unless the sponsor certifies it will cover their support. Dependants require additional funds: £285 for a partner, £315 for a first child, £200 for each additional child. All supporting financial documents must be dated within 31 days of the application, and non-English documents need certified translations.11GOV.UK. Dependent Family Members in Work Routes
Fees and Processing Times
Costs are often higher than applicants expect, and fee schedules change frequently.
As of April 2026, UK Skilled Worker visa fees for out-of-country applications range from £628 (Immigration Salary List role, three years or less) to £1,618 (standard role, over three years). In-country applications cost £943 for three years or less and £1,865 for longer stays.12GOV.UK. Home Office Immigration and Nationality Fees, 8 April 2026 Every applicant also pays the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year (£776 for students and applicants under 18) to access the NHS.13GOV.UK. Pay for UK Healthcare as Part of Your Immigration Application Over three years, that adds £3,105 before credential evaluations, tests, and translations. Standard processing takes about three weeks from outside the UK.14GOV.UK. Visa Processing Times – Applications Outside the UK
Australia’s Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) base fee starts at AUD 4,910 (roughly USD 3,200), with additional charges for each family member. Processing runs from several months to over a year depending on volume and background-check complexity.
Canada charges CAD 850 per adult applicant plus a right-of-permanent-residence fee of CAD 515, plus biometrics: roughly CAD 1,365 per adult before dependants. The processing target for Express Entry is six months from submission, though actual timelines fluctuate.
Bringing Family Members
All three systems allow immediate family to come with the primary applicant, but the mechanics differ.
In the UK, your spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner of at least two years, and children under 18 can apply as dependants. Each pays the same visa fee as the main applicant and their own Immigration Health Surcharge, and you must show maintenance funds for each.11GOV.UK. Dependent Family Members in Work Routes One restriction to know: dependants of workers sponsored in care worker or senior care worker roles are generally not permitted unless the main applicant held their visa under rules in force before March 2024.
Canada handles the family inside the Express Entry application itself, granting permanent residency to all included family members at once. A spouse’s education, language ability, and work experience can also boost your CRS score. Australia adds family members to the visa application, each with an additional fee, processed alongside the primary applicant.
What the Visa Actually Gets You
Points-based visas lead to permanent status, but the timing differs.
In the UK, Skilled Worker visa holders can apply for indefinite leave to remain after five continuous years in the UK on a qualifying visa. You must still be earning at or above the required salary, your employer must confirm you are still needed, and applicants aged 18 to 64 must pass the Life in the UK Test on British history, government, and culture.15GOV.UK. Indefinite Leave to Remain if You Have a Skilled Worker Visa English does not need to be re-proven.
Canada’s Express Entry grants permanent residency directly on approval, with no intermediate work visa. Australia’s subclass 189 is a permanent visa from the outset. The subclass 190 (state-nominated) route is also permanent, but carries a two-year obligation to live in the nominating state or territory.
If Your Application Is Refused
A refusal is not necessarily the end, but review windows are short.
In the UK, the decision letter explains the grounds and whether administrative review is available. Applications made from outside the UK have 28 days from the date of the decision to request review, and the fee is £80.16GOV.UK. Ask for a Visa Administrative Review – If You’re Outside the UK As of 2026, reviews can take 12 months or longer. If you have not received a decision within six months, the Home Office will contact you with an update.
In Canada, refused Express Entry applications can sometimes be addressed through a request for reconsideration, a judicial review in Federal Court, or by fixing the deficiency and submitting a new profile. In Australia, many refusals can be appealed to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, with deadlines typically running 21 to 28 days depending on the visa subclass and where you were when the decision was made.
The most common refusal grounds across all three systems are documentation failures: an expired language test, the wrong occupation code, insufficient financial evidence, or employer references that do not match the duties described in the occupation classification. These are fixable, and reapplying after correction is usually a better strategy than a long appeal.
Be Honest on the Application
Every points-based system takes false information seriously, and the consequences reach far beyond a single refused application. Forged documents, misrepresented qualifications, or a stand-in for a language test can trigger a multi-year or permanent ban. In the UK, providing false information can lead to a ten-year re-entry ban. Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act imposes a five-year bar on applicants found to have misrepresented material facts. Australia can cancel a visa and apply a three-year exclusion for bogus documents or false statements.
Verification has also intensified. Immigration authorities routinely confirm language test results directly with testing agencies using certificate ID numbers, cross-reference employment claims against tax records, and run criminal history checks through national and international databases. Discrepancies are caught more often and earlier than they were five years ago. If a credential is weak, address it honestly. A lower score with genuine documentation is almost always recoverable. A fraud finding is not.
