How to Become an Irish Citizen as an American: 3 Ways

An American can become an Irish citizen through one of three routes: claiming citizenship by descent if you have an Irish-born parent or grandparent, naturalizing after living in Ireland long enough, or naturalizing on a shorter timeline as the spouse or civil partner of an Irish citizen. Ireland allows dual citizenship, so you keep your U.S. passport either way.1Immigration Service Delivery. Dual Citizenship Which route fits depends on your family tree, how long you’ve lived in Ireland, and whether you’re married to an Irish citizen.

Claiming Citizenship Through an Irish Parent or Grandparent

This is the pathway most Americans use. If one of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time you were born, you are already an Irish citizen and can apply directly for a passport. If one of your grandparents was born on the island of Ireland, you are eligible to become a citizen by registering on the Foreign Births Register.2Department of Foreign Affairs. Registering a Foreign Birth In the grandparent case citizenship is not automatic. You apply, and you become a citizen on the date your registration is approved, not retroactively.

How the Foreign Births Register Works

The Foreign Births Register (FBR) is run by the Department of Foreign Affairs and is the gateway for most Americans claiming Irish citizenship by descent.3Government of Ireland. Citizenship You apply through the Department’s online portal and submit supporting documents: your birth certificate, your Irish-born ancestor’s birth certificate, and every connecting birth, marriage, or death certificate needed to prove the lineage. Documents must be originals or certified copies.

The fee is €278 for adults and €153 for applicants under 18, paid online at the time of application. Processing currently takes about nine months.2Department of Foreign Affairs. Registering a Foreign Birth

What About a Great-Grandparent

The FBR reaches directly only as far as grandchildren of an Irish-born citizen.2Department of Foreign Affairs. Registering a Foreign Birth A great-grandparent link only works if the generational chain was kept up in the right order: your parent had to register on the FBR and become an Irish citizen before you were born. If your parent didn’t register in time, eligibility does not pass through to you. Many American families discover this too late.

A Note on Being Born in Ireland

Anyone born on the island of Ireland before January 1, 2005 is automatically an Irish citizen.4Citizens Information. Irish Citizenship Through Birth or Descent For births in Ireland on or after that date, citizenship depends on at least one parent being an Irish or British citizen or having built up enough legal residence in Ireland before the birth.3Government of Ireland. Citizenship Being born on Irish soil is no longer, by itself, enough.

Naturalizing After Living in Ireland

If you don’t have Irish ancestry but have been living in Ireland, you can apply for citizenship once you’ve accumulated enough qualifying residence. The rule is five years of reckonable residence within the nine years immediately before your application, counted as 1,825 or 1,826 days depending on leap years.5Immigration Service Delivery. Become an Irish Citizen by Naturalisation Inside that total, the final year before you apply must be continuous residence in Ireland.6Immigration Service Delivery. a href=”https://www.irishimmigration.ie/naturalisation-residency-calculator/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Naturalisation Residency Calculator Guidelines

Continuous doesn’t mean grounded. You can be out of the country for up to 70 days during that final year, with an additional 30 days possible in exceptional circumstances at the Minister for Justice’s discretion.5Immigration Service Delivery. Which Immigration Stamps Count

Not every day in Ireland is reckonable. Time held on a Stamp 1 (employment), Stamp 1G (graduate or spouse of a critical skills permit holder), Stamp 3, or Stamp 4 (general residence) counts. Time on a Stamp 2, the standard student permission, does not.7Immigration Service Delivery. Immigration Permission Stamps Americans who studied in Ireland are often caught out by this. The Department has an online residency calculator you can use to check your accumulated days before applying.8Immigration Service Delivery. Naturalisation Residency Calculator Guidelines

Good Character

You must also demonstrate good character, verified through a vetting disclosure from the National Vetting Bureau that checks your record in Ireland and abroad.9Department of Justice. Naturalizing Through Marriage or Civil Partnership

If you’re married to or in a civil partnership with an Irish citizen, the residency threshold is shorter. You must have been married or partnered for at least three years, and the relationship must be genuine and ongoing.5Immigration Service Delivery. Become an Irish Citizen by Naturalisation You need three years of reckonable residence out of the five years before your application, including one continuous year immediately beforehand.10Citizens Information. Becoming an Irish Citizen Through Naturalisation The same 70-day absence allowance applies. The marriage must be legally recognized in Ireland, and the good character and vetting requirements are identical to the standard route. Being married to an Irish citizen doesn’t guarantee approval.

What It Costs and How Long It Takes

Naturalization applicants use Form 8, or Form 9 if a naturalized parent is applying on behalf of a minor child. The forms are on the Irish Immigration Service website, and every application must be signed before a witness such as a solicitor, notary public, or commissioner for oaths.5Immigration Service Delivery. After Approval: Ceremony and Passport

Approved naturalization applicants are invited to a citizenship ceremony after paying the certification fee. There you make a formal declaration of fidelity to the Irish nation and loyalty to the State and receive your certificate of naturalization; you are legally an Irish citizen from that moment.11Immigration Service Delivery. Once you’re a citizen through any route, you can apply for an Irish passport. First-time adult applicants use Passport Online, complete the application, then print a cover page listing the original documents to mail in.12Citizens Information. How to Apply for Your First Irish Passport as an Adult The application requires an Identity Verification Form witnessed by a person in an approved occupation, listed on the Passport Online site. From the U.S., use a reliable postal service; in countries where the mail isn’t reliable you can submit through your nearest Irish Embassy.

What Irish Citizenship Gives You

As a citizen of an EU member state you can live and work in any of the 27 EU countries, plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, without a work permit or visa, and you’re entitled to the same treatment as locals in employment, taxation, housing, and education.13Citizens Information. What It Means for Your U.S. Taxes

Becoming an Irish citizen by itself doesn’t create Irish tax obligations, but actually living in Ireland does. You become Irish tax-resident if you spend 183 or more days there in a tax year, or 280 days across two consecutive years with at least 31 days in each.15Citizens Information. Tax Residence and Domicile in Ireland Full-time residents owe Irish tax on worldwide income.

The U.S. side is the harder complication. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income no matter where they live, so if you move to Ireland the same income can be taxable in both countries. The U.S.-Ireland tax treaty reduces or eliminates double taxation on certain income, and the foreign earned income exclusion is $132,900 for 2026 if you qualify as a bona fide resident abroad.16Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Foreign tax credits are also available for taxes paid to Ireland.

The reporting rules trip up more Americans than the tax itself. If your Irish and other foreign financial accounts exceed $10,000 in aggregate at any point in the year, you must file an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114).17FinCEN. Report Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts If your foreign financial assets exceed $200,000 on the last day of the tax year, or $300,000 at any point, while you’re living abroad, you must file IRS Form 8938; those thresholds double for joint filers.18Internal Revenue Service. Do I Need to File Form 8938, Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets Penalties for missing these filings are steep and apply even when no extra tax is owed.
