How to Cancel 24 Hour Fitness: Notice, Fees, and Freeze Options

To cancel a 24 Hour Fitness membership, submit a written or electronic cancellation request through the member portal, in person at your home club, or by certified mail; save the confirmation; and expect one more billing cycle of dues before the cancellation takes effect. If you’re still inside a commitment contract, you’ll also owe an early termination fee unless a state or federal protection applies to you.

Know Which Membership You Have Before You Cancel

24 Hour Fitness sells two structures: month-to-month plans and commitment contracts, usually 12 months. Month-to-month members can cancel any time without penalty, though you’ll still pay through the notice period. Commitment members who leave before the term is up owe an early termination fee, and the amount depends on your specific contract and state.

Pull up your original agreement before you do anything else. It’s usually available through your account at 24hourfitness.com, or you can request a copy at your home club. The cancellation section will tell you the notice period, the early termination fee if any, and where to send a written cancellation.

One charge worth knowing about: 24 Hour Fitness bills a $69.99 annual fee (plus tax) starting on the 15th day after enrollment and every year after.124 Hour Fitness. Deals on Gym Membership If your cancellation doesn’t finalize before that annual billing date rolls around, you’ll be charged for it. Hawaii and Nevada members are exempt.

Three Ways to Submit the Cancellation

Online

24 Hour Fitness runs a cancellation page at 24hourfitness.com/members/cancel.224 Hour Fitness. Cancel Membership Options Log in, follow the prompts, and screenshot or save the confirmation at the end. Members with limited-term or prepaid memberships may be redirected to a club or to customer service instead of finishing online.

In Person at Your Home Club

Walking into the club where you enrolled is the most direct route. Ask the front desk for a cancellation form, fill it out, and have staff process it while you wait. Before you leave, get a signed and dated copy of the completed form. A verbal “you’re all set” is worth nothing two months later when a charge shows up; a signed piece of paper is what settles the dispute.

By Certified Mail

Certified mail with return receipt creates the strongest paper trail. You get a proof-of-delivery document with the recipient’s signature and the delivery date.3United States Postal Service. What is Electronic Return Receipt Send your letter to the address listed in your membership agreement, and include your full name, membership number, billing address, a clear statement that you’re canceling, and the effective date you want.

Certified mail is worth the extra few dollars if you’ve had trouble getting a response, or if you’re canceling a commitment contract and want documented proof the gym received notice on a specific date.

Notice Period, Final Billing, and the Annual Fee

Most 24 Hour Fitness agreements require advance notice. Plan on at least one more billing cycle after the gym receives your request. If you cancel on the 10th and your billing date is the 5th, you’ll likely be charged on the next 5th and keep access through that paid period.

The timing of your request matters. Submitting right after a billing date gives the gym the full notice window before the next charge posts. Submitting right before a billing date almost guarantees one more month of dues. And if the annual fee is scheduled to hit during that final cycle, you’ll pay that too.

After your last billing cycle, watch your bank or credit card statements for two to three months. Automated billing sometimes keeps running after a cancellation is processed. If a charge appears anyway, dispute it with your bank and send 24 Hour Fitness your cancellation confirmation.

When You Can Cancel Without an Early Termination Fee

State Cooling-Off Periods for New Members

Most states have consumer protection laws that let you cancel a health club contract within a set number of days after signing, with no penalty and no reason required. The window varies by state, from as few as 3 business days to as many as 20. Georgia allows 7 business days, for example.4Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. Health Spa Contract Cancellation Dates If you signed up recently and are second-guessing it, check your state’s health club law and the “right to cancel” clause in your contract. Some refund rights for prepaid dues or initiation fees expire when the cooling-off window closes.

Active-Duty Military Relocation

Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, active-duty servicemembers can terminate a gym contract without an early termination fee after receiving military orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location that doesn’t support the membership.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 50 USC 3956 – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts Deliver written or electronic notice with a copy of your orders. Any prepaid amounts for service after the termination date must be refunded within 60 days. This protection applies to contracts you entered into before receiving the relocation orders and overrides an early termination clause even mid-commitment.

Death of a Member

If you’re handling a deceased member’s affairs, 24 Hour Fitness will terminate a commitment membership on presentation of written documentation, typically a death certificate. Prepaid amounts for unused service are generally refundable to the estate’s representative.

If the Reason Is Temporary, Consider a Freeze

When you’re going to be away for a stretch but expect to come back, freezing may cost less than canceling and re-enrolling. During a freeze, 24 Hour Fitness stops collecting monthly dues, though the annual fee still applies if it falls in the freeze window.624 Hour Fitness. Membership Policies and Club Rules You need to be current on dues and provide at least ten days’ notice. Options include a 3-to-6-month medical freeze with doctor verification, a 3-to-6-month temporary work transfer freeze with employer documentation showing a move of more than 25 miles from the nearest club, an open-ended active-duty military freeze with orders, and an extended freeze for any other reason up to 12 months.

One thing to know if you’re on a commitment contract: freezing doesn’t shorten the contract. The commitment period extends by however long the freeze lasts.624 Hour Fitness. Membership Policies and Club Rules

How to Keep Extra Charges From Happening

The bigger risk in a gym cancellation isn’t the process; it’s assuming the process worked when it didn’t. Unpaid balances after a botched cancellation can get sent to third-party collections, and a collections account from an old gym membership will damage your credit the same way any other collections account would.

A few habits protect you:

  • Save every confirmation. Screenshot online confirmations, keep signed forms, hold onto certified mail receipts, and store them somewhere retrievable for at least a year.
  • Monitor your statements for three months after the cancellation should have taken effect. Autopay systems don’t always update quickly.
  • Don’t just stop paying. Canceling the card on file or blocking the charge at your bank does not cancel the membership. Missed payments get treated as delinquent, and the balance grows until it lands in collections.
  • Follow up in writing. If a confirmation email or a zero-balance final statement hasn’t arrived within a few weeks, contact 24 Hour Fitness again and document what you’re told.

Treat the cancellation as pending until you see proof it’s done. A confirmation email or a zero-balance final statement closes the loop. Anything before that is just a request.
