To cancel a Barnes & Noble membership, sign into your account at bn.com, open the My Membership page, and click the cancellation button at the bottom to stop auto-renewal; you can also call (866) 238-7323, use the 24-hour live chat, or visit any store.1Barnes & Noble. Cancel My Membership One timing detail matters more than most people realize: Barnes & Noble charges the $39.99 renewal roughly 30 days before your term ends, not on the expiration date, so acting early is what keeps you from paying for another year.2Barnes & Noble. About Membership Automatic Renewal
Turning Off Auto-Renewal vs. Full Cancellation
Barnes & Noble treats these as two different actions. Turning off auto-renewal keeps your Premium benefits active through the rest of your paid term and simply prevents the next charge. Full cancellation deactivates the membership immediately and forfeits any accumulated stamps and rewards.3Barnes & Noble. Membership Automatic Renewal Options Most people want the first option. Unless you qualify for a refund, deactivating today just throws away months you’ve already paid for.
Cancel Online
Sign into bn.com and go to My Membership under My Account. At the bottom of that page, use the cancellation button to opt out of automatic renewal; your membership then expires at the end of the current term.1Barnes & Noble. Cancel My Membership
You can also do this from the Manage Your Membership page. Find the Auto Renew toggle next to your Premium Membership details, deselect the slider, and save. Either path produces the same result.3Barnes & Noble. Membership Automatic Renewal Options

When You Can Get a Refund
Barnes & Noble will refund the $39.99 fee if you cancel within 30 days of your membership start or renewal date and you haven’t used any membership discounts or benefits in that period. Outside the 30-day window, or once you’ve applied the 10% discount to even one purchase, the fee is nonrefundable unless Barnes & Noble discontinues the Premium program entirely.7Barnes & Noble. Membership Fees and Enrollment
This is where the renewal timing becomes a trap. Because the charge runs about 30 days before expiration, “I’ll cancel right before it renews” often means canceling after the money has already come out.2Barnes & Noble. About Membership Automatic Renewal If you’ve decided not to continue, turn off auto-renewal now. You still keep your benefits through the end of the term you already paid for.
After You Cancel
If you turned off auto-renewal, Premium benefits remain active until your current term ends, then the membership lapses with no further charges. If you requested full immediate cancellation through a representative, the membership deactivates right away and any accumulated stamps and rewards are forfeited.3Barnes & Noble. A few days later, log back into bn.com and confirm the account shows as non-renewing or inactive. Save any confirmation email or chat transcript. That’s your evidence if a charge turns up on your card down the road.
If You’re Charged After Canceling
Call (866) 238-7323 first and reference the date you canceled, along with the confirmation email or chat transcript. Most post-cancellation charges get reversed at this step.
If the charge isn’t refunded, you have outside options. The FTC’s Click-to-Cancel rule requires subscription sellers to offer a simple cancellation mechanism and to stop charges once a consumer cancels; continuing to bill after a cancellation request can trigger FTC enforcement.8Federal Trade Commission.
