To cancel a free trial before you get charged, find out which platform is actually billing you and cancel there before the trial window closes. The trial might run through Apple, Google Play, PayPal, or the company’s own website, and each one has a different cancellation path. Cancel in the wrong place and the charge still goes through.
Find Out Who Is Actually Billing You
Answer one question first: if the trial renewed today, who would charge your card? That is not always the company whose app you downloaded. Sign up through the App Store or Google Play and Apple or Google handles the billing, so cancellation has to happen inside their systems. Enter your card directly on a company’s website and the subscription lives with that company. Pay through PayPal and the recurring authorization sits inside your PayPal account.
The fastest way to check is the confirmation email you got when the trial started. It names the billing entity. No email? Look at your credit card or bank statement for a pending authorization or small temporary charge. The merchant name on that transaction is who controls the subscription, and it often looks nothing like the brand you signed up for. That mismatch is why people cancel in the wrong place and get charged anyway.
Once you know the platform, make sure you have the login for the account you used at sign-up, not a different account with the same service.
Cancel Through Apple on iPhone or iPad
Most subscriptions started inside an iOS app are managed by Apple, not the app maker.
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions to see every active and expired subscription tied to your Apple Account.
- Tap the trial you want to end.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. If there is no cancel button and you see an expiration message in red, it is already canceled.

Cancel Through Google Play on Android
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select the trial you want to end.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the confirmation prompt.
Check that the status updates to show a cancellation date. If it still says “renews on” with a future date, the cancellation did not go through.
Cancel Directly on the Provider’s Website
If you signed up on a company’s site and entered your card there, the subscription lives in that company’s system. Log into your account, go to account settings or billing, and look for a subscription or membership section. The cancel option is usually inside.
Expect friction. Many companies design the cancellation flow to slow you down. You click “cancel,” then get a screen asking why you are leaving, then an offer for a discounted rate, then another confirmation page, sometimes a prompt to chat with a representative. Keep choosing the option to proceed at every step until you see a final confirmation message or receive a confirmation email.
If the site has no self-service cancellation at all, send an email or open a support ticket with your name, account email, and a clear request to cancel. Keep copies of everything. Under the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act, any company selling through a negative option online is required to provide a simple mechanism to stop recurring charges,2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet and that documentation matters if the company keeps charging you.
Subscriptions Billed Through PayPal
Some services route payments through PayPal even when you sign up on the company’s own website. If PayPal handles the billing, canceling on the provider’s site alone may not stop future charges. Log into PayPal, go to account settings, find pre-approved payments or automatic payments, locate the merchant, and cancel the billing agreement there. That revokes PayPal’s authorization to send money to that company.
What a Successful Cancellation Looks Like
A real cancellation produces a confirmation email or on-screen notice showing the date you canceled and the date your access ends. Save it. It is your proof if a charge appears later.
Most services let you keep using the product through the end of the trial or the current billing cycle after you cancel. Canceling on day three of a seven-day trial still gives you four days of access. This is standard across Apple, Google, and most direct providers,1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple so there is no reason to wait until the last day.
Watch your bank or credit card statement during the next billing cycle. If the trial was supposed to end on the 15th and a charge posts on the 16th, escalate.
If You Get Charged After Canceling
Start with the company. Contact support, reference your cancellation confirmation, and ask for a refund. Many companies reverse the charge without a fight when you have documentation. No federal law guarantees a refund grace period after an accidental renewal, but plenty of companies grant one as a matter of policy.
Dispute the Charge With Your Credit Card Issuer
If the company refuses, the Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute the charge with your card issuer. You have 60 days from the date the statement containing the charge was sent to submit a written dispute.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Call the number on the back of your card, or start the dispute in your issuer’s app or website, and attach your cancellation confirmation.
Stop a Recurring Bank Debit
If the subscription pulls directly from your bank account, you can place a stop payment order. Federal regulations give you the right to stop a preauthorized electronic transfer by notifying your bank at least three business days before the next scheduled payment. If the order is verbal, the bank can require written confirmation within 14 days, and the verbal order expires without it.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E – 1005.10 Preauthorized Transfers
Also tell the company directly that you are revoking authorization; your bank may ask for proof that you did. Banks typically charge a fee for a stop payment order, so check the amount before requesting one.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Stop Automatic Payments From My Bank Account?
Avoid the Problem Next Time
Set a calendar reminder for two days before any trial ends. Not one day, and not the day of. Two days gives you a buffer if the company processes cancellations on a business-day schedule or calculates the trial end date differently than you expect. Name the reminder something specific, like “Cancel [Service] trial — check [App Store / website].”
Some banks and card issuers offer virtual card numbers, which are temporary numbers linked to your real account. You can set a $0 spending limit or deactivate the virtual number after signing up. If the trial tries to convert, the charge declines. Check whether your issuer offers this in their app.
Better yet, cancel immediately after signing up. Most trials let you keep access through the full trial period even after cancellation, so there is no advantage to waiting. Use the trial, forget about it, and let it expire on its own.
