Help Center – USA TODAY Residents of California, Georgia, Maine, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Virginia can cancel online through their account management page instead.2USA TODAY. Help Center – USA TODAY If you originally signed up through the App Store or Google Play, Gannett cannot cancel the subscription for you; you have to cancel through the platform that charges you.
What to Have Ready Before You Cancel
Pull up your account number, the email address on the account, and the ZIP code tied to your billing or delivery address. The account number is on billing emails and, for print subscribers, on the mailing label above your name. Knowing the exact name of your local publication also helps, since Gannett operates hundreds of titles and the representative needs to open the right account.
Check your most recent statement and note the charge amount, the billing date, and who charged you. If the line item shows Apple or Google Play rather than Gannett or the publication name, that tells you to skip the phone call and go to the app store instead.
Canceling by Phone
Call 1-800-872-0001 during weekday business hours. The line is closed on weekends. The representative will verify your identity using your account number, email, or ZIP code, and will likely offer a discounted rate or a temporary price reduction to keep you on. That offer is standard practice. Decline it clearly if you want out, and ask for a confirmation number before you hang up. Write it down. That number is your proof the cancellation was requested if charges continue.
Canceling Online
If you live in one of the seven states listed above, sign in at your publication’s website, open your account settings, and look for the cancellation option under the subscription section.2USA TODAY. Click through every screen until you reach a final confirmation page. If you stop partway, the cancellation does not process and your next billing cycle continues. Save or screenshot the confirmation.
If the online portal does not show a cancellation option, you’re outside the seven states, and the phone call is your only path.
Canceling Through Apple or Google Play
Gannett does not control billing for subscriptions purchased through the App Store or Google Play, so calling Gannett will not stop those charges.

What Happens After You Cancel
Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current subscription period, not the moment you request it.5USA TODAY. Subscription Terms and Conditions for USA TODAY You keep digital access and any remaining print deliveries through that period. Cancel two weeks into a monthly cycle and you still have two weeks of access.
Expect a confirmation email within 24 hours. If it doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder, then call back with your confirmation number to verify the request went through. Monitor your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles afterward to catch anything that slips through.
Refunds
Refund treatment splits by subscription type. For print subscriptions, any remaining account balance over $10.00 is refunded when you cancel. For digital-only subscriptions, Gannett does not provide prorated refunds for the rest of the current billing period.6Gannett. Subscription Terms You keep access through what you’ve paid for, but no money comes back.
The broader terms reinforce this: payments are non-refundable, and there are no credits for unused portions of a canceled subscription. Gannett reserves the right to issue refunds at its discretion but has no obligation to do so.5USA TODAY. Subscription Terms and Conditions for USA TODAY On an annual digital plan, the remaining months are generally forfeited if you cancel mid-term. Timing the cancellation close to the renewal date matters more than acting quickly mid-cycle.
A Vacation Hold Is Not a Cancellation
A vacation hold pauses print delivery, but the subscription stays active and Gannett keeps charging the subscription fee minus a small credit for skipped print days. Full digital access continues.6Gannett. Subscription Terms If your goal is to stop all charges, use the cancellation process above.
If Charges Continue After You Cancel
Start by calling 1-800-872-0001 with your confirmation number. If the charge isn’t reversed, dispute it through your bank or credit card company. Under federal law, you have 60 days from when your bank transmits the statement showing the charge to report it and avoid liability for further unauthorized transfers.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1693g – Consumer Liability
The dispute works best with documentation. Your confirmation number, the date and time of the cancellation call, and any confirmation emails all strengthen the case. Without that record, the dispute becomes your word against the merchant’s billing records.
Cancel Before the Promotional Rate Expires
Many Gannett subscriptions start at a discounted introductory rate, often around 92 cents per week for roughly three months.8Poynter.
