How to Cancel a Google TV Subscription on Any Device

To cancel a Google TV subscription, go to the billing system that took your money and cancel there: Google Play in a web browser or on an Android device for most people, or the Settings app on an iPhone or iPad if that’s where you originally signed up. Two things to know before you start. Google TV itself is free — the platform is a smart TV interface, not a paid service — so what you’re actually canceling is a streaming service like Paramount+, Max, or YouTube TV that Google bills on the service’s behalf.1Google TV. First, Figure Out Who’s Charging You

Before you click anything, confirm which company is actually billing you. Streaming services signed up for through a Google TV device are usually billed through Google Play, but not always. If you subscribed on an iPhone or iPad, Apple is probably handling the charges. If you signed up directly on the streaming service’s own website, neither Google nor Apple has a record of it, and only that service can cancel it for you.

The quickest check: sign in to payments.google.com and open Subscriptions & services. Everything Google is billing you for will appear there with the next payment date and amount.3Google Payments Center Help. Manage Recurring Payments and Subscriptions If the subscription you want to stop isn’t in that list, Google isn’t the one charging you.

Cancel Through a Web Browser

This is the easiest route on a laptop or desktop.

  1. Go to play.google.com and sign in with the Google account that holds the subscription.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top right.
  3. Click Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Find the subscription and click Manage.
  5. Click Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

If “Manage” doesn’t show a cancel option, the page may send you to the streaming service’s own site to finish the job there.3Google Payments Center Help. Manage Recurring Payments and Subscriptions

Cancel on an Android Phone or Tablet

You can’t cancel from the Google TV device itself — not from your television, not from a Chromecast. You need a phone or computer.4Google Help. Start or Manage a Subscription on Your Android TV On an Android phone:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Select the subscription.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. Google will keep billing you until you cancel through the steps above.5Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Cancel on an iPhone or iPad

If you signed up through an Apple device, Google Play won’t have your subscription on file. Apple took the payment, so Apple cancels it.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select the streaming service.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription. You may have to scroll down to find the button.

When the Cancel Button Isn’t There

This happens more often than people expect. If the subscription doesn’t appear in your Google Play list, or it appears but won’t let you cancel, work through these in order:

  • Confirm you’re signed in to the exact Google account you used when you subscribed. Multiple accounts trip up a lot of people.
  • Switch devices. If the web isn’t working, try the Play Store app; if the app isn’t working, try play.google.com.
  • On Android, clear the Google Play Store cache from Settings > Apps.
  • If none of that reveals the subscription, you probably bought it directly from the streaming service rather than through Google Play. Log in to that service’s website and cancel there.

Pause Instead of Cancel

If you only need a break, Google Play lets you pause many subscriptions. Billing stops for the length of the pause, and the subscription picks back up automatically when it ends. Follow the same path you’d use to cancel on Android or the web, but choose Pause payments under “Manage” and pick a duration. Access ends at the close of your current billing period and resumes when the pause expires.5Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play Pausing only shows up if the service provider has enabled it, so not every subscription offers it.

Canceling a Free Trial

Free trials on Google TV services roll into paid subscriptions automatically when the trial ends. You can cancel at any point during the trial to avoid the charge. One catch: canceling may end your access right away rather than letting you watch out the remaining trial days. If you want to keep watching until the last minute, set a reminder for the day before the trial expires and cancel then. The steps are the same as for a paid subscription — Google Play if you signed up through Google, Apple if you signed up on an iPhone or iPad.

If You’ve Already Been Charged

Missed the window and got billed anyway? You can ask Google Play for a refund. Requests sent within 48 hours of the charge have the best shot at approval. After 48 hours, Google will point you to the streaming service to work it out under their own refund policy.7Google Play Help. Apps, Games, and In-App Purchases (Including Subscriptions) Refund Policies

To file the request on the web:

  1. Sign in at play.google.com.
  2. Click your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history.
  3. Find the charge and click Report a problem.
  4. Pick the option that matches your situation, say you’d like a refund, and submit.

Google usually responds within a business day, with decisions sometimes taking up to four days.8Google Help. Request a Refund on Google Play A refund on any given purchase is a one-time offer. What Happens After You Cancel

Canceling doesn’t shut off your access immediately. You keep watching through the end of the billing period you already paid for. Pay monthly on the 5th and cancel on the 18th, and you still have the service through the end of that month.5Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play After that, access ends and no new charges should post.

Google emails a confirmation when the cancellation goes through. Save it. If a charge shows up on your statement after you canceled, that email is your proof of when you ended the subscription.9Google Account Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies Movies and shows you bought outright stay in your Google account — those are separate purchases, not part of the subscription.

If a charge still hits after you’ve canceled and Google isn’t resolving it, federal law gives you another option. Under Regulation E, you can tell your bank to stop a preauthorized electronic transfer, and the bank must honor the request if you give notice at least three business days before the scheduled payment.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers For most cancellations, though, the confirmation email and Google’s own record are enough.
