To cancel a Lightspeed subscription, contact Lightspeed support for your specific product, give the required written notice (30 days if you never signed an order form, or up to 90 days if you did), export your business data before access ends, and separately shut down Lightspeed Payments and any third-party apps you added through the Marketplace. Each piece has to be handled on its own, and missing one is how former customers end up with charges after they thought they were done.
Check Your Notice Period and Termination Cost
The notice you owe depends on your contract. With no signed order form, Lightspeed requires at least 30 days’ written notice. If you signed an order form with a term longer than 90 days, you need to give at least 90 days’ notice before the end of that term. For terms shorter than 90 days, the notice period equals the length of the term. Miss the window and the contract renews automatically for the same duration.1Lightspeed. Lightspeed Service Agreement
Ending a contract early is expensive. You pay every recurring charge that would have come due through the end of your current term, plus any unpaid one-time fees. With Lightspeed Retail plans running $89 to $289 per month, canceling halfway through an annual contract can mean a bill of $500 to over $1,700 depending on the plan.1Lightspeed. Lightspeed Service Agreement Lightspeed does not prorate refunds for monthly or annual contracts canceled early.2Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). Canceling your Retail POS (X-Series) account
If you’re close to the end of your term, ride it out and cancel with proper notice. Check your most recent invoice to see exactly when the current term ends.
How to Cancel Each Lightspeed Product
Lightspeed sells several products and each has its own path. If you use more than one, cancel each separately.
Retail POS (X-Series)
Log in and go to Setup, then Billing. Scroll to the bottom-left and click “Cancel my account.” A chat window opens with Lightspeed’s bot; select “I want to cancel my account.” After asking whether you have an open Lightspeed Capital balance, it connects you to a live agent who processes the cancellation.2Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). Retail POS (R-Series)
R-Series has no in-app cancellation button. Contact your Sales Account Manager or email sales@lightspeedhq.com. One trap worth flagging: deleting the Lightspeed app from your devices does not cancel the plan. It only removes locally stored data. Your subscription stays active and billing continues until you formally cancel through support.3Lightspeed Retail Support. Deleting your Lightspeed Retail POS (R-Series) account
eCom (Online Store)
Lightspeed eCom requires a separate cancellation through support. Canceling disables your storefront so customers can no longer see it, but the subscription itself may remain technically active until your current term’s expiry date.4Lightspeed eCom Support. Disabling your eCom store
Cancel Lightspeed Payments Separately
This is the step most people miss. Canceling your POS subscription does not shut down your Lightspeed Payments merchant processing account. Contact your Lightspeed Account Manager separately to cancel the Payments contract and ask about any additional terms that apply.5Lightspeed. Lightspeed Payments FAQ Skip this and processing fees can keep appearing on your statement even after your POS access is gone.
Cancel Third-Party Apps and Integrations
Marketplace apps are billed as independent charges through your Retail POS account. They don’t stop when the main subscription ends. In X-Series, go to Setup, then Billing, then App Subscriptions, and click the trash icon next to each app you want to remove.6Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). Managing third-party app subscriptions in Retail POS
Some apps won’t appear there. Lightspeed notes that Marsello (Lightspeed Advanced Marketing) may need to be canceled through its own support team if it doesn’t show in App Subscriptions.6Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). Managing third-party app subscriptions in Retail POS Integrations like Mailchimp are disconnected from within the Mailchimp account under Integrations. Disconnecting removes all synced Lightspeed data from Mailchimp, so export what you need from there first.7Mailchimp. Connect or Disconnect Mailchimp for Lightspeed
Export Your Data Before You Cancel
Once the account closes, access is gone. Export before you initiate cancellation, not after. In X-Series, you can download CSV files from Sales History, the product Catalog, Customers, and Reporting by applying filters and clicking Export List. Sales History exports cap at 1,000 transactions per run, so a long history may need several filtered pulls.8Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). Exporting your Sales Data from Retail POS (X-Series) R-Series users should export employee and customer data before contacting support.3Lightspeed Retail Support. Keep in mind that the IRS generally requires businesses to retain financial records for at least three years from the date the return was filed, with longer periods (six or seven years) in certain situations.9Internal Revenue Service. How long should I keep records? Store the exported files somewhere you’ll still be able to reach them years from now.
What if the Account Owner Has Left
Lightspeed will only take cancellation instructions from the Account Owner on file. If that person has left the company and you still have access to their email, contact Lightspeed Retail Support and request a transfer of the Account Owner role. If the business owns the email domain, IT can reinstate the address to complete the transfer. If the Account Owner has died, Lightspeed’s support team handles access on a case-by-case basis.10Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). Understanding the Account Owner Admin user in Retail POS (X-Series)
Sort this out first. Calling support without Account Owner credentials means the request won’t be processed, and the billing clock keeps running.
Identifiers to Have Ready
Support locates accounts by Site ID, Company ID, or registered business name. You can find these in your account settings or on prior invoices.11Lightspeed. Contact us – Lightspeed Restaurant POS (O-Series) Having them ready keeps the request from stalling past a billing date.
Final Invoice, Hardware, and Written Confirmation
A final invoice covers the remaining balance for your last active period. Since Lightspeed doesn’t prorate, you won’t get money back for unused days in a cycle you’ve already paid for.2Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). Canceling your Retail POS (X-Series) account
If you bought hardware through the Lightspeed Store, non-Apple hardware is eligible for return within 30 days of receipt. Check your original order confirmation for exceptions. If you leased equipment, your lease agreement sets the return window and any fees for unreturned items.
Don’t consider the cancellation finished until you have written confirmation from Lightspeed that the account is closed and no further charges will occur. Save that confirmation with your support ticket number. If a charge shows up afterward, those two documents are what you’ll use to dispute it.
