To cancel a line on T-Mobile, the Billing Responsible Party has to contact T-Mobile directly by phone, chat, social media, or in a store, because there is no button in the app or on the website that will do it for you.1T-Mobile Support. Cancel Service The call itself is quick. The expensive part is what a cancellation triggers behind the scenes: a device balance coming due, promotional credits stopping, a multi-line discount shrinking, or a bundled Netflix subscription quietly rolling over to your credit card. Sort those out first.
Check These Before You Call
Most of the surprise charges people run into after canceling a line are visible on the current bill if you know where to look.
Device Payment Balance
If the line has an active Equipment Installment Plan, what happens next depends on whether other lines stay open. When at least one line remains active on the account, the monthly device payments on the canceled line simply keep billing as usual. If canceling this line closes the entire account, the full remaining EIP balance hits your final bill as a lump sum.1T-Mobile Support. Cancel Service Depending on the phone and how many payments are left, that lump sum can run from a few hundred dollars to more than $1,000. Check the outstanding balance for each line in the T-Life app or on your latest statement.
Promotional Credits
Buy One Get One deals, trade-in offers, and similar promotions typically spread their credits over 24 or 36 months, and those credits require the associated line and installment plan to stay open for the full period.2T-Mobile Support. Promotional Trade-In Cancel early and the remaining credits stop immediately.3T-Mobile Support. Promotional Cards, Credits, and Rebates You still owe the full device balance minus whatever credits already posted, which can completely change the math on what looked like a free phone. Log in and confirm whether any active promotions are tied to the specific line you want to drop.
Multi-Line Pricing
T-Mobile’s per-line price drops as you add lines, and some plans have hard minimums. The Better Value plan requires three or more phone lines, and T-Mobile’s own terms warn that canceling lines will affect price and promotional eligibility.4T-Mobile. T-Mobile Introduces Its Most Value-Packed Plan Ever If dropping this line pushes you under a plan threshold, the remaining lines can move to a different rate and everyone left on the account pays more. Run those numbers before you call.
Bundled Streaming Perks
If your account includes Netflix On Us, eligibility often depends on line count or plan tier. On Go5G or Magenta plans, you need at least two lines to keep the Netflix benefit.5T-Mobile. Netflix on Us Fall below the threshold and T-Mobile stops paying the subscription, but Netflix does not cancel your membership. It starts charging whatever payment method it has on file, and that charge can go unnoticed for months.
Port the Number Out First If You’re Switching Carriers
If whoever uses the line wants to keep the phone number, do not cancel first. The FCC’s guidance is direct: contact the new carrier and let them start the transfer, and do not terminate service with your existing company before starting service with the new one.6Federal Communications Commission. Porting: Keeping Your Phone Number When You Change Providers Once the port is in motion, T-Mobile cannot refuse to release the number even if there’s a balance owed.
To port out of T-Mobile, you’ll need a Temporary Port Out PIN, which only the Primary Account Holder can generate.7T-Mobile Support. Transfer Your Phone Number In the T-Life app, open the Manage tab, tap the gear icon, choose Permission & controls, then Transfer PIN, and follow the prompts. The PIN is good for seven days. You’ll also need your T-Mobile account number from the top of your bill. If Port Out Protection is turned on for the line, disable it first. When the new carrier finishes the port, T-Mobile closes the line automatically. You don’t need to call separately.
Who Can Actually Cancel the Line
Only the Billing Responsible Party can remove a line.8T-Mobile Support. Billing Responsible Party and Authorized Users – Consumer Authorized users can change rate plans, add features, even buy new devices, but they cannot cancel a line. If you aren’t the BRP, the person who is has to make the request or be on the call with you. The BRP will need the account’s security PIN to authenticate. If it’s lost, the BRP can reset it in the T-Life app or by bringing valid ID to a store.
How to Submit the Request
You have four ways to reach a representative:
- Phone: dial 611 from a T-Mobile device or 1-800-937-8997 from any phone.9T-Mobile. Contact Us
- Chat through the T-Life app.
- T-Force, T-Mobile’s social team, on X at @TMobileHelp or through Facebook Messenger.
- In person at a T-Mobile store with valid ID.
Be very specific about what you want. Canceling one line is a different transaction from closing the whole account, and unclear wording has shut down entire plans by accident. Give the representative the exact 10-digit number you want removed and confirm the other lines stay active. Before you hang up or close the chat, ask for a confirmation or request number and save it. A confirmation email usually follows, but don’t count on it as your only record. Save the chat transcript or note the date, time, and representative’s name.
T-Mobile also warns that voicemail messages and DIGITS call history on the canceled line are permanently deleted when cancellation processes.1T-Mobile Support. Cancel Service Save anything you need before the billing cycle ends.
What Your Final Bill Will Look Like
T-Mobile future-dates every cancellation to the end of the current billing cycle.1T-Mobile Support. Cancel Service The line stays usable until then and you pay the full month regardless of when in the cycle you asked. There is no prorated refund for unused days.
Your final statement will show the last month of service plus any remaining equipment balance. If other lines remain, the canceled line’s EIP payments keep coming monthly. If the account is closing entirely, the full remaining EIP balance appears on that last bill. Final payment can be made at t-mobile.com/guestpay using your account number, at a store, by mail, or by calling 1-877-453-1304.1T-Mobile Support. Cancel Service Pay promptly to keep the account out of collections.
If You’re Canceling Home Internet
Canceling a T-Mobile Home Internet line means sending the 5G gateway back. If you don’t return it, a non-return fee posts to your bill and T-Mobile will not reverse it.10T-Mobile. Frequently Asked Questions – T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Ask the representative for a return shipping label and instructions when you cancel.
Suspend the Line Instead?
If the reason for canceling is temporary, suspending the line preserves the phone number and avoids losing promotional credits.
Seasonal Suspension
T-Mobile allows up to two voluntary suspensions per rolling 12-month period, each up to 90 days.11T-Mobile Support. Suspend or Restore Your Line The line can’t make or receive calls during the suspension, but you keep paying the full monthly plan charge plus any device payment and protection fees. For Home Internet, the suspended line drops to $10 a month under the Internet AWAY plan. Suspending saves little money on phone lines. Its real purpose is holding the number.
Military Suspension or Termination
Active-duty service members who receive orders for a deployment of 90 days or longer, or a permanent change of station, can terminate or suspend a wireless contract without early termination fees under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 50 USC 3956 – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts Any prepaid amounts covering service beyond the termination date must be refunded within 60 days. Send T-Mobile customer service a copy of the orders and get written confirmation of the suspension or termination.
Watch the Next Bill
Keep the confirmation number, the chat transcript or call notes, and the date you submitted the request. If the cancellation doesn’t process and charges continue, that documentation is the fastest path to a fix. Without it, you’re arguing from memory.
After the billing cycle closes, check the T-Life app or website to confirm the line no longer shows as active and that the next bill reflects the correct line count. If charges keep coming, escalate through T-Mobile customer service first, then file a complaint with the FCC or the Better Business Bureau. T-Mobile has a team assigned to BBB complaints, and that route often resolves billing disputes that regular support cannot.
