How to Cancel a Milan Laser Contract and Get a Refund

Milan Laser contracts are written “all sales final,” but that phrase is the company’s opening position, not the law. How to cancel a Milan Laser contract depends almost entirely on timing. If you signed in the last few days, a federal or state cooling-off law may let you walk away with no penalty. If you’re weeks or months in, you’ll need to lean on a specific contract clause, negotiate with corporate, or push a dispute through your lender, your credit card issuer, or a regulator. Most people recover something. Almost no one recovers it on the first phone call.

Start With the Calendar

Before anything else, count the days since you signed. Cooling-off rights are strict deadlines, and they override the “all sales final” language in your contract.

The Federal Three-Day Rule

The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule under 16 CFR Part 429 gives you three business days to cancel certain purchases without penalty, but only if the sale happened somewhere other than the seller’s permanent place of business.1eCFR. 16 CFR Part 429 – Rule Concerning Cooling-Off Period for Sales Made at Homes or at Certain Other Locations Signing at a regular Milan clinic almost certainly does not qualify. Signing at a promotional event, a hotel conference room, a fair, or a temporary pop-up does, for purchases of $130 or more (or $25 or more at your home).

Where the rule applies, Milan was required to hand you a completed Notice of Cancellation form at signing. You cancel by mailing or delivering a signed, dated copy of that form, or any written cancellation notice, by midnight of the third business day after the transaction.2eCFR. 16 CFR 429.1 – Rule Concerning Cooling-Off Period for Sales Made at Homes or at Certain Other Locations If you never received the required form, your window may stay open until Milan provides it.

State Consumer Protection Statutes

Many states have their own laws covering personal service contracts and health studio agreements, and these often give a three-to-five-day cancellation window running from the date you signed, regardless of where you signed. Some require the contract itself to carry a bold-print cancellation notice; if that notice is missing, the window can stay open. Check your state attorney general’s website for the rules on prepaid service contracts. These rights cannot be waived by anything in Milan’s paperwork.

The Exits Written Into the Contract

Past any cooling-off period, Milan’s own contract typically allows cancellation in two situations.

Medical Necessity

You need a letter from a licensed physician stating that laser hair removal is no longer safe or medically advisable for you. A vague note will not clear the bar. The letter should identify the specific condition and state clearly that continuing treatment is contraindicated. With that documentation, Milan generally allows a prorated exit based on sessions already received.

Relocation Beyond the Service Area

If you move somewhere with no Milan location within a set distance (contracts commonly use a fifty-mile radius), you can request cancellation with proof of your new address. A utility bill, lease, or similar document usually satisfies this. Milan operates more than 100 locations, so check their map before pursuing this route.

Neither of these is the same as Milan’s “Lifetime Guarantee,” which covers future touch-ups and grants no refund right on its own.

When You Don’t Qualify for a Clean Exit

This is the situation most people are in: past the cooling-off window, no medical reason, no move. The first Milan representative you speak with will repeat “all sales final.” Treat that as the opening line of a negotiation, not the end of one.

Milan does process refunds for unused services in some cases, usually after consumers escalate. The pattern from public complaints is consistent: flat denial at first, then partial refunds for unused treatments when the client is persistent, documented, and working with corporate rather than the local clinic.

Approaches that improve your position:

  • Document any service failures. Missed appointments the clinic caused, provider shortages, long waits, equipment problems, or inadequate pre-treatment screening all weaken Milan’s argument that it has performed the contract.
  • Escalate past the clinic. Ask for Milan’s Client Services or corporate office. State the resolution you want plainly: a refund for all unused treatments.
  • Put everything in writing. Follow every call with an email that summarizes what was said and what was promised.
  • Signal that you will file complaints. A calm, specific mention of the FTC, CFPB, your state attorney general, and the BBB often shifts the tone of the conversation.

Sending the Cancellation the Right Way

Whatever the basis for cancellation, send the request by certified mail with return receipt requested. Certified mail gives you a confirmed delivery date Milan cannot dispute later. Email and phone calls do not carry the same evidentiary weight if the dispute escalates.

Include in the letter:

  • Your full name and the account or membership number from the purchase agreement.
  • The date you signed and the location where you signed.
  • A clear statement that you are canceling the contract, and the specific basis (cooling-off right, medical necessity, relocation, or a negotiated agreement).
  • Copies of supporting documents: physician’s letter, proof of new address, or any correspondence from Milan agreeing to cancel.

If your contract included a Notice of Cancellation form, complete and include it. Send the letter to the corporate address on your contract, and keep copies of everything along with the postal receipts.

Stop the Loan, Not Just the Contract

Most Milan contracts are paid through a third-party lender such as Ally Lending, PatientFi, Synchrony, or Clarity Pay. Canceling with Milan does not automatically stop those payments. The lender holds a separate contract, and automated withdrawals will continue until you deal with it directly.

Once you’ve mailed the cancellation to Milan, contact the lender. Provide a copy of the cancellation request, the certified mail receipt, and any response from Milan. Ask the lender to freeze or adjust the balance to reflect only services actually received. Keep records of every call: representative name, date, and confirmation number. If the lender refuses to adjust while Milan has acknowledged the cancellation, you have a billing dispute, and the next section is where you go.

Credit Card Dispute Rights

If you paid any portion by credit card, federal law gives you real leverage.

The 60-Day Billing Error Window

The Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute charges for goods or services that were not delivered as agreed. Your written dispute must reach the card issuer’s billing inquiries address within 60 days of the first statement showing the disputed charge.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors That deadline is strict. If you’re weighing cancellation, don’t let billing cycles pile up. Send the dispute by certified mail to the billing inquiries address, not the general payment address. The issuer must acknowledge within 30 days and resolve within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days), and it cannot collect on the disputed amount or report it delinquent while investigating.

Claims Against the Card Issuer

A separate provision lets you assert against the card issuer any claim you’d have against Milan. If Milan owes you a refund for services not rendered, that claim can travel to the card company. The transaction must exceed $50 and must have occurred in your state or within 100 miles of your billing address, though those limits fall away if the issuer is the same entity as the merchant, controls it, or solicited the transaction by mail.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666i – Assertion of Claims and Defenses by Cardholder Against Card Issuer You must make a good-faith attempt to resolve with Milan first, so document that attempt.

Complaints That Create Leverage

Formal complaints do two things: they occasionally trigger regulatory action, and more reliably, they create a paper trail that makes stonewalling expensive. File across channels at the same time, and file before you give up on negotiation.

  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, at consumerfinance.gov, for disputes involving the financing company. Companies generally respond within 15 days, and complaints are published.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Submit a Complaint
  • Federal Trade Commission, at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The FTC uses complaint data to spot patterns and pursue enforcement.
  • Your state attorney general’s consumer protection division. Search the AG’s name plus “consumer complaint” for the online form.
  • Better Business Bureau. Milan responds to BBB complaints, and some consumers have reached refund agreements through this channel.

When you next call Milan corporate, saying the complaints are already filed changes the conversation.

Active-Duty Servicemembers

If you’re on active duty, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act gives you a separate cancellation right that covers gym memberships and fitness programs, the category most likely to reach a laser hair removal treatment plan. You can terminate the contract if you receive military orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location that does not support the service.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 50 USC 3956 – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts Cancellation requires written or electronic notice with a copy of your orders. Milan cannot charge an early termination fee, and prepaid amounts covering time after termination must be refunded within 60 days. These protections extend to spouses and dependents in certain circumstances, including a servicemember’s death in service or catastrophic injury.

Tax Consequences if a Balance Is Forgiven

If your lender writes off part of your loan as uncollectible or forgives it in a settlement, the forgiven amount may count as taxable income. Lenders file Form 1099-C with the IRS when they cancel $600 or more of debt, and you receive a copy.7Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-C, Cancellation of Debt You owe income tax on the cancelled amount unless an exclusion applies. The most common exclusion is insolvency: if your total liabilities exceeded your total assets right before cancellation, you can exclude the forgiven amount up to the extent you were insolvent. The IRS provides a worksheet in Publication 4681.8Internal Revenue Service. Canceled Debts, Foreclosures, Repossessions, and Abandonments Factor this in before accepting a large reduction in your balance.

Small Claims Court

If Milan refuses to refund unused services and you’ve worked through negotiation, complaints, and any card dispute, small claims court is available. Maximum claim amounts range from $2,500 to $25,000 depending on the state, filing fees are low, and you don’t need a lawyer.

The strongest case shows that Milan failed to deliver services you paid for, that you tried to resolve the dispute in good faith, and that the company refused to refund the unused portion. Bring the contract, all correspondence, certified mail receipts, complaint filings, and any evidence of service failures. Before filing, read your contract for a mandatory arbitration clause. Many consumer service contracts include one, and Milan may move to send your case to arbitration if yours does. Some contracts include a short opt-out window for the arbitration clause; check whether that deadline is still open.
