How to Cancel a PDF Scanner Subscription and Get a Refund

To cancel a PDF scanner subscription, you cancel through whichever platform is actually billing you: the Apple App Store, Google Play, PayPal, or the app developer’s own website. Deleting the app from your phone does nothing to stop the charges. Until you cancel at the billing source, the money keeps coming out.

Uninstalling the App Will Not Stop the Charges

This trips people up constantly. You delete the scanner, assume you’re done, then see another charge three months later. Both Apple and Google are explicit: removing an app from your device has no effect on the subscription attached to your account. The billing relationship lives at the platform level, not on your phone. You have to cancel separately, even if the app is long gone from the device.

Find Out Who Is Actually Billing You

Before you can cancel anything, figure out where the charge originates. Your bank or credit card statement is the fastest way to tell.

  • A charge labeled APPLE.COM/BILL means Apple handles the subscription. You can confirm on any iPhone or iPad under Settings, your name, then Subscriptions.
  • A charge starting with GOOGLE* followed by the app name points to Google Play. Open the Play Store and check your subscriptions list.
  • A charge from PayPal means the developer routes billing through PayPal. Sign in and look under Payments, then Automatic Payments.
  • A charge under the developer’s own company name means you signed up on their website and they bill your card directly. Search your email for a subscription confirmation.

The merchant name on the charge tells you which of the paths below to follow.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad

If Apple handles the billing, cancel from your device:

  • Open Settings and tap your name at the top of the screen.
  • Tap Subscriptions.
  • Find the PDF scanner app and tap it.
  • Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down. If you see an expiration date in red instead, it is already canceled.

If the Subscription Is Shared Through Family Sharing

Only the person who bought a shared subscription can cancel it. Other family members lose access once it is canceled. If you downloaded the app through a family member’s purchase and made in-app purchases of your own, you’ll need to buy the app yourself to keep access to those purchases after the shared subscription ends.2Apple Support. Cancel on Android

Google Play subscriptions are managed inside the Play Store, not device settings.

  • Open your subscriptions in Google Play.
  • Select the PDF scanner subscription.
  • Tap Cancel Subscription.
  • Follow the prompts to confirm.

Premium features remain available for the rest of the billing period you already paid for.3Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Pausing as an Alternative

Google Play offers a pause option for some subscriptions. Pausing takes effect at the end of your current billing period and can last from one week to three months, depending on the app. No charges occur while paused, and you can resume anytime by going back to your subscriptions and tapping Resume. Not every app supports pausing, so you may only see the cancel option.3Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Cancel Through PayPal

If the developer bills through PayPal, canceling inside the App Store or Play Store will not help. Stop the recurring payment inside PayPal itself:

  • Sign in to PayPal and go to Settings.
  • Click Payments, then Automatic Payments (sometimes labeled “Subscriptions and saved businesses”).
  • Find the merchant name for your PDF scanner app.
  • Select the merchant and cancel the automatic payment.

In the PayPal mobile app, tap the menu icon, then Subscriptions or Linked Businesses, select the merchant, and tap Stop Paying with PayPal.4PayPal. Automatic Payment – Update Recurring Payments

Cancel Through the Developer’s Website

Some PDF scanner subscriptions are sold directly on the developer’s site, bypassing app stores entirely. Log in using the email and password you signed up with. Look for an Account Settings, Billing, or Subscription Management section. The cancellation button is usually buried in there.

Save the confirmation email. That receipt is your proof if a charge appears later. If the site does not offer a clear way to cancel online, email support and request cancellation in writing. A paper trail matters if you later need to dispute a charge with your bank.

Getting a Refund for a Charge You Did Not Want

If a renewal already hit your card, you may be able to get the money back. The process depends on who billed you.

Apple

Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID. Select “I’d like to,” choose “Request a refund,” pick the reason, select the charge, and submit. Apple typically responds within 24 to 48 hours. There is no publicly stated deadline for how long after a charge you can request one, but submitting sooner gives you a better chance of approval.5Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple

Google Play

For purchases made within the last 48 hours, request a refund through Google Play: visit your order history, select the charge, and choose “Report a problem.” Google usually decides within one to four business days. After 48 hours, Google directs you to the app developer, whose own refund policy then applies.6Google Play Help. Request a Refund on Google Play

PayPal or Direct-Billed Subscriptions

For subscriptions billed through PayPal or the developer directly, contact the developer’s support team and request a refund. Send it in writing so you have documentation.

Disputing the Charge With Your Card Issuer

When a refund request fails or the developer ignores you, a credit card dispute is the fallback. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have 60 days from the date of the billing statement containing the charge to send a written dispute to your card issuer.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – 1666

Include your name, account number, the date and amount of the charge, and a brief explanation of why you believe it’s an error. Send the letter to the billing inquiries address on your statement, not the payment address. Certified mail with a return receipt gives you proof of delivery. Once the issuer receives your dispute, it has 30 days to acknowledge and 90 days to resolve it. You can withhold payment on the disputed amount during the investigation.

One warning: blocking a charge at your bank or placing a stop payment does not cancel the underlying subscription. The developer may still treat your account as active and could send the balance to collections. Cancel the subscription first, then dispute the charge separately.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Stop Automatic Payments From My Bank Account

What Happens to Your Files After You Cancel

Canceling drops your account to the free tier once the paid period expires. Premium features like text recognition, cloud sync, and batch processing typically go away. Your documents do not vanish overnight, but your access can change depending on where they are stored.

Files saved locally on your phone or tablet stay on the device regardless of subscription status. The risk is with cloud-stored documents. Many apps retain cloud data for a limited grace period after cancellation, but policies vary. Some developers delete cloud-stored files after 30 to 90 days; others keep them indefinitely in read-only mode.

Before your subscription expires, export anything you need. Download cloud-stored PDFs to your device or move them to a separate service like Google Drive or iCloud Files. Check the app’s terms of service or support page for its specific data retention policy. Doing this before cancellation beats trying to recover files after the fact.
