How to Cancel a Planet Fitness Account: 3 Ways, Deadlines, and Fees

To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, go to your home club in person, mail a signed cancellation letter to that club by certified mail, or use the online cancellation option if your location offers it. Your home club is the specific gym where you signed up, and it is the only location that can process the cancellation. Timing matters as much as method: miss a billing deadline by a day and you can be charged for another month or locked into the annual fee.

The Three Ways to Cancel

Planet Fitness runs on a franchise model, so procedures vary slightly between clubs. Nearly every location accepts in-person and mailed cancellations. Some also allow online cancellation depending on the membership type and club.

In Person at Your Home Club

Walking into your home club during staffed hours is the fastest route. Tell the front desk you want to cancel and they will have you fill out a cancellation form. Bring a photo ID and your membership barcode, which lives on your key tag or in the Planet Fitness app. Before you leave, ask for a printed or emailed confirmation showing the cancellation date. That receipt is your proof if charges keep posting later.

By Certified Mail

If you can’t visit, send a cancellation letter to your home club’s mailing address. Do not send it to Planet Fitness corporate; it has to go to the club where you signed up. You can find the address through the gym locator at planetfitness.com.

Include your full name, address, phone number, email, and membership ID, along with a clear statement that you are requesting cancellation. Date and sign the letter. Send it USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested so you have proof of mailing and delivery. Expect to pay roughly $8 to $10 for certified mail with a return receipt.1United States Postal Service. Shipping Insurance and Delivery Services

Online

Some members can cancel through the Planet Fitness website, depending on membership type and home club. Log in at planetfitness.com to see whether the option appears in your account. Timing: The Two Deadlines That Cost People Money

The 10th of the Month for Monthly Dues

To avoid being charged for the following month, your cancellation needs to reach your home club by the 10th. Cancel on the 11th and you will be billed for one more month, with your membership staying active through that paid period. The rule applies whether you cancel in person, by mail, or online, so if you are mailing the letter, send it early enough to arrive before the 10th.

The 25th Before Your Annual Fee

Planet Fitness charges an annual fee on top of monthly dues, typically $49.3Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Home The fee hits once per year, and the date depends on when you signed up. To avoid it, cancel by the 25th of the month before the annual fee is due. Miss that window and the fee is charged before the account closes. Refunds after the fee has posted are rare, so check your membership agreement for the exact date.

What You’ll Owe at Cancellation

Planet Fitness offers Classic memberships starting at $15 per month and PF Black Card memberships starting at $24.99 per month. Either tier can be sold with or without a 12-month commitment.4Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships

On a no-commitment plan, you can cancel anytime without a buyout fee, as long as you meet the billing deadline. On a 12-month commitment, canceling before the term ends triggers a $58 buyout fee. After the commitment period expires, the plan usually converts to month-to-month and the buyout no longer applies.

Either way, any outstanding balance has to be paid before the cancellation goes through. If you owe unpaid dues, the club will require you to settle them first.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If the reason you want to cancel is travel, injury, or a short budget crunch, freezing may be the better move. Planet Fitness lets members freeze an account for up to two consecutive months, once per calendar year. Monthly dues stop during the freeze. The annual fee does not: if it falls during the freeze window, you still owe it. Freezing can also spare you a new startup fee if you plan to come back within a couple of months.

After You Cancel

Do not assume the cancellation went through just because you submitted the paperwork. Watch your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles. Charges that post after cancellation happen, especially when the request lands close to a billing deadline.

If you see a charge you didn’t authorize, call your home club first. It may be a processing delay or an error the front desk can reverse. If the club won’t help, file a billing dispute with your bank or credit card company. Your cancellation confirmation, whether a printed receipt, an email, or the certified mail return receipt, is the evidence that wins the dispute. Keep those documents for at least 90 days.

Many states also have health club consumer protection laws with a short cooling-off period, often three to five business days after signing a new contract, during which you can cancel for a full refund. If a gym is making cancellation unreasonably difficult or continues charging you after a valid cancellation, you can file a complaint with your state attorney general or with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov.5Federal Trade Commission.
