Whether Online Cancellation Is Available to You
Planet Fitness offers online cancellation only where state consumer protection laws require it. Today that means California, New York, and New Jersey. If you joined at a club in any other state, the option simply won’t appear inside your account portal, and the app will route you to contact your home club instead.
California’s automatic renewal statute is the clearest driver. Any business that lets you sign up for a recurring subscription online must also let you cancel online, through a prominently placed link or button inside your account settings, with no added steps designed to slow you down.2California Legislative Information. There is no federal rule extending this to every state. The FTC finalized a “Click-to-Cancel” rule in 2024 that would have required all subscription businesses to make cancellation as easy as sign-up, but the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated it for procedural failures in the rulemaking process.3United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. How to Cancel Through Your Account
If you’re in an eligible state, log into your account at planetfitness.com or through the Planet Fitness app and open the account management section, where membership details live.4Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness My Account Planet Fitness routes account management through a third-party portal called myiclubonline, so expect to be redirected during the process. That’s normal.
Before you reach the final cancel button, the system will push several retention screens at you. It will suggest freezing your membership or downgrading your plan. Click through every one of them until you get to the confirmation. If you close the browser before that last confirmation, nothing has been submitted and your account stays active.
Have these on hand before you start:
- Your membership ID: the nine- or ten-digit barcode number on your key tag, also listed under My Profile in the app.
- The email address tied to your billing account, which may not be the one you use day to day.
- The name of your home club, meaning the specific location where you originally signed up.
When you finish, you should receive a confirmation email with a reference number and an effective cancellation date. Save it. That email is your only proof if a charge shows up later and you need to dispute it.
Timing the Cancellation So You’re Not Billed Again
Two deadlines control whether you get charged after cancellation, and they are separate.
Monthly dues bill on the 17th of each month. Planet Fitness must receive the cancellation by the 10th to stop that charge.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ Submit it on the 11th and you’ll be billed on the 17th, with access continuing through that paid cycle.
The annual fee is separate. Planet Fitness charges a $49 annual enhancement fee, and to avoid it, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before the fee is due.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ The annual fee is typically billed on or around the first of the third month after your sign-up date and recurs on that date every year afterward. Check your original sign-up paperwork or your billing history in the member portal to confirm when yours hits. Once the annual fee processes, it’s generally nonrefundable.
If Online Cancellation Isn’t Available in Your State
Members outside California, New York, and New Jersey have two routes: cancel in person at the home club or send a cancellation letter by certified mail.
In person is the most straightforward. Bring a photo ID and your key tag to your home club, request cancellation at the front desk, and ask for written or printed confirmation before you leave. A verbal “you’re all set” is not documentation. You have to go to your home club specifically, not just any Planet Fitness location.
By mail, address the letter to your home club, not corporate. Include your full name, address, phone number, email, membership ID, and a clear statement requesting cancellation, then date and sign it. Send it USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested and keep the tracking number. The return receipt proves the club received the letter on a specific date, which is what you’ll rely on if a billing dispute comes up. Allow up to seven business days for processing after delivery, and mail early enough that the letter arrives before the 10th of the month.
Early Termination Fee on a 12-Month Commitment
Planet Fitness offers both month-to-month and 12-month commitment plans, with Classic memberships starting at $15 per month and PF Black Card memberships at $24.99 per month.5Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness may waive the buyout fee in three situations: you move more than 25 miles from any Planet Fitness location, you provide documentation of a serious medical condition, or you have military deployment orders. You’ll need to submit proof, so gather the paperwork before you start the cancellation.
After You Submit the Cancellation
Your access continues through the end of the billing cycle you’ve already paid for. Cancel on the 8th with a billing date of the 17th, and you can keep using the gym through the 16th. Planet Fitness does not prorate or refund partial months.
Watch your bank statements for at least two billing cycles after the effective cancellation date. The most common complaint is a charge that posts after cancellation, and the confirmation email is what resolves those disputes. If an unexpected charge appears, contact your home club first with the reference number. If the club doesn’t clear it up, file a dispute with your bank and provide the confirmation email, and the certified mail receipt if you used one, as evidence.
