To cancel a Squarespace account, you work through three stages in order: export your site content, cancel every active subscription (the website plan plus any add-ons, which do not stop on their own), and, if you want your data erased for good, delete the account itself. Skipping the middle stage is where most people get caught, because add-ons like Google Workspace, Email Campaigns, and Acuity Scheduling keep billing after your website goes dark.
Export Your Site Before You Cancel Anything
Once your subscription ends and the site goes offline, the normal copy-and-paste routes close. Export first.
Set your site availability to Public, open the Import & Export Content panel, click Export, and choose the WordPress icon to generate the file. The export captures layout pages, one blog page with its posts, text blocks, and image blocks. It does not capture store pages, video or audio blocks, custom CSS, style settings, or additional blog pages.1Squarespace Help Center. Exporting Your Site If your site leans on e-commerce, embedded media, or custom styling, save those pieces manually before you move on.
Decide What to Do With Your Domain
A domain registered through Squarespace does not cancel when your website subscription does. It runs on its own renewal cycle and keeps billing until you handle it.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription You have three realistic choices: transfer the domain to another registrar, connect it to a different site, or let the current term expire.
To transfer away, open your domains dashboard, click the domain, switch Domain Lock off, then click Request Transfer Code and authenticate. Squarespace emails the authorization code within 24 hours. Give that code to your new registrar to start the transfer, which can take up to 15 days.3Squarespace Help Center. Transferring a Domain Away From Squarespace Record your current DNS settings before you begin so you can replicate them at the new provider.
If you plan to let the domain expire instead, note the renewal date so a charge doesn’t surprise you after you’ve already canceled the website.
Cancel the Website Subscription
With content exported and the domain sorted:
- Open the Billing panel for the site you want to cancel.
- Under Subscriptions, click the subscription or plan name.
- Click Cancel Subscription (it will be labeled “Website” or “Store” depending on your plan).
- Review the cancellation details. Within the refund window, you’ll see a choice between keeping access until the end of the billing cycle or taking an immediate refund and losing access right away.
- Select a reason from the dropdown and work through the remaining prompts.
- If other active subscriptions are attached to the site, Squarespace shows a panel listing them. Read that list.
- Click Cancel Subscription one final time to confirm.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription
On a monthly plan, the site stays live through the end of the current billing cycle. On an annual plan still inside the 14-day refund window, choosing “Get Refund Immediately” takes the site offline the moment you confirm.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription
If You Subscribed Through Apple or Google
Squarespace cannot cancel a subscription that was purchased through the iOS App Store or Google Play. If your Billing panel reads “Managed by Apple” or “Managed by Google,” you have to cancel on that platform instead.
On an iPhone: Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, find Squarespace, tap Cancel Subscription.4Apple Support. Cancel Add-Ons Separately
Canceling your website subscription does not cancel other Squarespace services tied to the same account. Each add-on bills on its own cycle until you stop it individually.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription The ones that catch people:
- Google Workspace email purchased through Squarespace keeps billing after the site goes down. Manage or cancel it from the Google Workspace panel on your expired site. To keep the email, migrate it to a direct billing arrangement with Google.
- Email Campaigns stays active after the website cancels. The dashboard remains available through your expired site; cancel from the Billing section when you’re ready.
- Acuity Scheduling keeps running, and clients can still book through the standalone scheduling page. Cancel it separately if you no longer need it.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription
- Digital products (blog subscriptions, courses, video pages, member sites) enter a 30-day pause when the website subscription ends, then deactivate.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription
Log back into the expired site and check the Billing panel until every subscription shows as canceled.
Refunds
Squarespace refunds annual website plans in full if you cancel within 14 days of the initial purchase, and you request the refund through Squarespace support. If you claimed a free domain with that annual plan, the cost of the domain registration is deducted from the refund.6Squarespace Help Center. Website Refund Policy
There are no refunds on monthly plans, on annual plans canceled after 14 days, or on renewal payments.6Squarespace Help Center. Website Refund Policy If you’re on an annual plan heading toward renewal, cancel before the renewal date (visible on your invoices in the Billing panel) or you’ll be charged for another year with no way to recover the money.
What a Canceled Site Looks Like
Canceling takes the site offline for visitors but does not delete your content. The data stays in Squarespace’s system, and you can bring the site back by purchasing a new subscription.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription One caveat if you’re on legacy pricing: reactivation won’t bring back the old rate.
While expired, you can still log in and reach the Billing, Domains, Import & Export, Google Workspace, Permissions, and Contacts panels.2Squarespace Help Center. Canceling a Website Subscription Search engines stop indexing an offline site, so whatever SEO authority the site had erodes the longer it stays down. Squarespace does not publish a retention timeline for canceled sites; the site can sit until you either reactivate or delete it.
Delete the Account Permanently
If you’re finished with Squarespace entirely, you can delete the account after every subscription is canceled. This is separate from canceling your site, and it cannot be undone.
- Open the Security settings in your account dashboard.
- Click Delete Account and log in to confirm.
- If any active subscriptions remain, they’ll be listed. Cancel them first.
- Return to Security settings, confirm nothing is listed, then click Delete Account and Confirm.7Squarespace Help Center. Deleting Your Account
Deletion removes your login credentials, personal data, all site content, and connected services like Unfold or Bio Sites. A deleted account cannot be recovered. You can register a new account with the same email later, but it starts clean. Sites and subscriptions where your account was a contributor rather than the owner aren’t affected by the deletion.7Squarespace Help Center. Deleting Your Account
Most people don’t need this step. If every subscription is canceled and nothing is billing, the account can simply sit. Deletion is for anyone who wants their personal data pulled out of Squarespace’s systems for good.
