How to Cancel a Subscription on Google Play Store: Refunds and Pausing

To cancel a subscription on the Google Play Store, open the Play Store app on an Android device or go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions in any web browser, sign in with the Google account that bought the subscription, select it, and tap or click Cancel subscription. The cancellation lives in your Google account, not on your phone, so the same steps work whether you’re on Android, a computer, or even an iPhone through the browser.

Cancel From an Android Phone or Tablet

Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner. Choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Every active and expired subscription tied to your Google account appears in one list.

Tap the subscription you want to end, then Cancel subscription, and follow the confirmation prompts. Google shows the date your access expires so you know when the service actually stops.

Cancel From a Web Browser

If you don’t have an Android device, or you’d rather use a full screen, go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions in any browser and sign in with the Google account that originally purchased the subscription. Your active subscriptions appear with a Manage button beside each one. Click Manage, then Cancel subscription, then confirm. The page updates to show the pending expiration date.

This works on a Mac, a Windows PC, a Chromebook, an iPhone, or an iPad. There’s no Google Play Store app on iOS, so the browser is the route for Apple users.

A second web path runs through the payments center at payments.google.com. Sign in, click Subscriptions & services at the top, find the subscription, click Manage, and choose Cancel subscription. 1Google payments center help. Uninstalling the App Does Not Cancel the Subscription

This is where most people get burned. Deleting an app from your phone has no effect on the billing agreement behind it. Google’s help page says plainly: “When you uninstall the app, your subscription won’t cancel.” 2Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play The subscription sits in your Google account, not on the device. If you removed an app months ago and never formally canceled, charges have probably continued. Open your subscription list using one of the methods above and check.

What Happens After You Cancel

Canceling doesn’t shut off access right away. You keep the subscription’s features for the rest of the period you already paid for. Google’s own example: buy a one-year subscription on January 1 for $10 and cancel on July 1, and you still have access through December 31. 2Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play The same logic applies to monthly plans. Cancel on the 15th of a cycle that started on the 1st, and you’re covered through the end of that billing period.

Google then sends an automated confirmation email from Google Play showing the cancellation timestamp and the final date of service. Save it. If a charge shows up on your statement after that date, the email is your evidence when disputing it.

Getting a Refund for the Last Charge

Canceling stops future charges. It does not automatically refund the most recent one. For recent purchases, you can request a refund through Google Play by opening your order history at play.google.com, finding the charge, and selecting Request a refund.

If more than 48 hours have passed since the purchase, Google directs you to the app developer instead. Developers handle refunds under their own policies and applicable law. 3Google Help. Request a Refund on Google Play The developer’s contact information is on the app’s Play Store listing page. For a subscription you’ve held for months, a refund is unlikely, but canceling still prevents the next charge.

If You’re Still Being Charged After Canceling

First, check that the charge on your statement actually says “GOOGLE” in the transaction name. Shared devices and family members sometimes trigger purchases you don’t recognize. Your full payment history is at pay.google.com.

If the charge is genuinely unauthorized, or it posted after your confirmed cancellation date, report it to Google using their unrecognized-charges form within 120 days of the transaction. Google usually responds with a decision within 15 minutes, though it can take up to four business days. If Google declines to help, contact your bank or credit card company to dispute the charge directly.

Pause Instead of Cancel

Some apps let you pause a subscription rather than end it. Pausing freezes billing at the close of your current cycle and resumes automatically when the pause period ends. Available durations run from one week to three months depending on the app. 2Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

On Android, open your subscriptions in Google Play, select the one you want, tap Manage, then Pause payments. Set the duration and confirm. Not every subscription offers this. If you don’t see the option, the developer hasn’t enabled it, and canceling is your only route out.
