To cancel your Academia Premium subscription, you have to cancel it in the same place it’s being billed: through the Academia.edu website if you signed up directly, through Apple if you subscribed on an iPhone or iPad, through Google Play on Android, or through PayPal if that’s your payment method. Cancelling in the wrong place is the most common reason people keep getting charged after they thought they were done.
Check Your Billing Statement First
Before you touch any settings, look at the charge on your bank or credit card statement. If it reads “Academia” or “academia.edu/payments,” you subscribed directly through the website. If it reads “Apple.com/bill” or “Google Play,” the subscription lives inside your phone’s app store. It may also appear on a PayPal statement if you paid through PayPal.1Academia Support. What’s This “Academia” Payment on My Bill?
Work backward from the statement, not from memory. If you signed up through the App Store, cancelling on Academia’s website does nothing, and Apple will keep billing you.
Cancel on the Academia Website
If Academia is billing you directly, you have two routes. Log in and go to academia.edu/settings, find the subscription section, and turn off auto-renewal. You should see an on-screen confirmation with the date your Premium access ends.
If the settings page won’t cooperate or you can’t sign in, email support@academia.edu from the address on your account and ask them to cancel. You can also submit a request through their help center.2Academia Support. Contact Us Save whatever confirmation you get.
Cancel Through Apple
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. Find Academia Premium, tap it, and tap Cancel Subscription.3Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
If you no longer have the device, sign in at appleid.apple.com or use the App Store on a Mac. You have to use the same Apple ID that’s being charged. If you’re not sure which Apple ID that is, Apple Support can trace the billing.
Cancel Through Google Play
On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon in the top-right, and select Payments & Subscriptions. Pick Academia Premium, tap Cancel Subscription, and work through the prompts. Google may ask you to pick a reason before it finishes.
You can do the same thing in any browser at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Sign in with the Google account that was actually charged.
Cancel Through PayPal
If the charge runs through PayPal, log into PayPal and go to Settings, then Payments, then Manage Automatic Payments (sometimes labeled “Pre-approved Payments”). Find Academia in the list and cancel the billing agreement. That stops PayPal from sending any further payments to Academia.
After cancelling on PayPal, it’s still worth confirming with Academia directly at support@academia.edu or through your account settings, so the subscription is marked cancelled on both sides.
What Happens to Your Access and Any Refund
Cancellation stops future charges. It does not cut off Premium immediately. You keep the features you paid for through the end of the current billing period.4Academia. How to Cancel Academia Premium Cancel three months into an annual plan and you still have nine months of access.
Refunds are narrow. Academia’s terms allow a full refund only within the first 30 days of your subscription. After that, all sales are final and you won’t get money back for time left in the current period.5Academia.edu. Terms of Use
One trap: deleting your Academia account is not the same as cancelling the subscription. Delete the profile without cancelling the recurring charge and the billing can continue. Cancel first, confirm the cancellation, and only then delete the account if you want to.

If Academia doesn’t resolve it, you have other options. For credit card charges, dispute the charge with your card issuer as unauthorized. For bank account or debit card charges, federal law gives you 60 days from the date your bank sends the statement containing the unauthorized charge to report it and limit your liability for further transfers. Your bank has to investigate and provide provisional credit within a set timeframe once you file the dispute.
