How to Cancel Amazon Prime: Refunds, Lost Benefits, and Trials

To cancel Amazon Prime, sign in to your account, open the Prime Membership page under Account & Lists, and click through the end-membership prompts until you see a confirmation. The cancellation takes effect immediately in Amazon’s system, but your benefits continue until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Whether you get any money back depends on timing and whether you’ve used Prime benefits since your last charge.

Cancel on the Website in a Few Clicks

Sign in and go to Account & Lists in the upper-right corner, then select Prime Membership. Look for the option to end your membership and follow the prompts.1Amazon. Cancel Your Amazon Prime Membership

Amazon does not make this a single click. The flow walks you through several screens listing benefits you’ll lose, offering a cheaper plan, and suggesting you pause instead. Each screen has a button to keep going with the cancellation, but that button is often smaller or less prominent than the option to stay subscribed. Keep clicking through.

You’re done when a confirmation appears on screen and your membership page shows a future expiration date rather than an upcoming renewal charge. If it still shows a renewal, the cancellation didn’t go through and you need to repeat the steps.

Cancel in the App or by Phone

In the Amazon mobile app, tap the profile icon, open your account settings, and find the Prime membership section. The screens work the same way as the desktop version.

If you’d rather have someone else handle it, call Amazon customer service at 1-888-280-4331, or use online chat through the Customer Service page by selecting Help with something else and then Prime. A representative can cancel for you.1Amazon. Cancel Your Amazon Prime Membership

If You Signed Up Through Google Play or a Carrier

Some Prime memberships are billed by a third party rather than by Amazon directly. If you signed up through Google Play on an Android device, cancel through Google’s subscription settings. If your Prime is bundled with a wireless carrier, internet provider, or similar service, contact that company to end it.1Amazon. Whether You’ll Get a Refund

Amazon’s refund policy comes down to two situations:

  • Cancel within three business days of signing up or converting from a free trial, and you qualify for a full refund. Amazon may deduct the value of any Prime benefits you used in those three days, such as free shipping on an order.
  • Cancel after three business days, and you get a full refund only if you haven’t made any eligible purchases or used any Prime benefits since your most recent charge. Streaming one show or using free shipping on one order eliminates the refund.

There are no prorated refunds. The membership fee is non-refundable outside those two windows, and memberships redeemed through gift codes or promotional codes aren’t refundable at all.2Amazon. What You Lose and Keep After Cancellation

Benefits Through the End of the Paid Period

If you’ve used any benefits since your last charge and no refund is coming, you keep full Prime access until the paid period expires. Free shipping, Prime Video, and the rest keep working. After that date, the account reverts to a standard Amazon account with standard shipping rates and no Prime Video library.

Amazon Photos Storage Drops to 5 GB

Prime members get unlimited photo storage. Without Prime, that drops to 5 GB of combined photo and video storage.3Amazon. Amazon Photos If your stored files exceed 5 GB after cancellation, your account enters “over quota” status. Amazon gives you 180 days in that state before it starts deleting files, beginning with the most recent uploads.4Amazon Customer Service. File Retention Policy Download anything you want to keep before or shortly after you cancel.

Digital Purchases Stay Yours

Movies, TV shows, and other digital content you bought through Amazon remain accessible after cancellation. Prime controls the streaming library, not content you purchased separately. You can also keep renting and buying digital content without a membership.

Household Members Lose Access

If you share Prime with a secondary adult through Amazon Household, that person loses Prime access when your membership ends. Household members share access to each other’s payment methods, so it’s worth a conversation before canceling. The other person would need their own Prime membership to keep the benefits.

Canceling a Free Trial

You can cancel a Prime free trial at any point before it converts to a paid membership without being charged. Canceling right after signup still gives you access through the end of the trial period, so there’s no reason to wait.

If the trial converts before you cancel, the three-business-day refund rule kicks in. Cancel within three business days of conversion for a refund, minus the value of any benefits used.2Amazon. Amazon Prime Terms and Conditions Setting a calendar reminder a day or two before the trial ends is more reliable than the reminder emails Amazon sends.

Keep the Confirmation

Amazon emails a confirmation after you cancel. Save it. If a charge shows up on your card later, that email is the fastest proof you canceled. A screenshot of your membership page showing the pending expiration date is a useful backup, and having both makes a billing dispute with your card issuer straightforward.
