How to Cancel an App Subscription on Any Platform

To cancel an app subscription, go to the platform that actually bills you — Apple, Google Play, Amazon, a streaming device like Roku, or the app developer’s own website — and cancel from your account settings there. The app itself usually can’t do it, and deleting the app from your phone never does. Figuring out which platform is charging you is the part that trips most people up, so start there if you’re not sure.

Find Out Who’s Actually Charging You

Look at the charge description on your bank or card statement. Bank statements typically show “APPLE.COM/BILL,” “GOOGLE*AppName,” “AMZN,” or “ROKU,” and that tells you which platform to open.

If the statement isn’t clear, search your email for “receipt” plus the app name. The original confirmation from when you signed up will name the billing platform. Still stuck? Open your subscription settings inside Apple, Google Play, and Amazon and see where the subscription appears. If it shows up in none of them, the developer is billing you directly, and you’ll need to log in to their website.

When nothing turns up anywhere, call your bank and ask for the full merchant details on the recurring charge. They can usually give you enough to identify the company.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad

Most iOS subscriptions are managed through your Apple Account, not inside the app. Deleting the app does not stop the charges.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap your name at the top.
  • Tap Subscriptions.
  • Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
  • Tap Cancel Subscription.

If there’s no Cancel Subscription button, or you see an expiration message in red text, it’s already canceled.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple

One thing to check: some subscriptions bought on an iPhone are actually billed through your wireless carrier, not Apple. If the subscription doesn’t appear in your Apple settings but you’re still being charged, look at your phone bill and contact the carrier directly to cancel.1Apple Support. Cancel on Android Through Google Play

Android subscriptions bought through the Play Store are managed by Google, not the app. Uninstalling doesn’t stop the billing.

  • Open the Google Play app, or go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions in a browser.
  • Tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Manage subscriptions.
  • Select the subscription.
  • Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

Google may offer a discount or an alternative plan during the process. Keep tapping through to confirm; you don’t have to accept anything.2Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

If you want a break rather than a full cancellation, some Play subscriptions can be paused. The pause takes effect at the end of your current billing period and lasts from one week to three months depending on the app. Billing and access resume automatically when it ends.2Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play

Cancel Through Amazon

Apps from the Amazon Appstore and services like Kindle Unlimited and Audible are billed by Amazon.

  • Go to Your Memberships and Subscriptions on Amazon.com.
  • Find the subscription.
  • Select Manage Subscription.
  • Select Cancel Subscription under Advanced Controls.

For auto-renewing digital subscriptions, you can also toggle off Auto-Renew instead. That stops the next charge without immediately ending your current access.3Amazon Customer Service. Manage Amazon Subscriptions

Cancel Through Roku, Fire TV, or a Similar Device

If you signed up for an app through a streaming device, that platform is often the biller, not the app itself. When the bank statement shows “Roku” or another device name, you have to cancel through that platform’s account settings.

Some streaming services complicate this by billing through a device platform but requiring you to contact the service directly to cancel. If you don’t see a Manage subscription option on the platform’s website, the subscription isn’t managed there and you’ll need to reach the service provider.4Roku Support. Cancel on the Developer’s Website

Some apps handle billing themselves. Netflix, Spotify, and many productivity tools work this way. Log in to the company’s website, find Account, Billing, or Subscription in your profile, and use the cancel or turn-off-auto-renew option there.

Federal law requires online sellers to provide a clear way to stop recurring charges and to fully disclose the subscription terms before collecting your payment information, so the option has to exist somewhere on the site.5Federal Trade Commission. 15 USC 8401-8405 – Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act

What Happens After You Cancel

Canceling doesn’t cut off access the same day. On Apple and Google Play, you keep the paid features until the end of the current billing cycle, and your account status changes to “expiring” with the end date shown.

There’s one exception worth knowing about. Some enterprise or cloud services, such as Windows 365, immediately shut off access and delete data when you cancel before the term ends, skipping any grace period.6Microsoft Learn. What Happens to My Data and Access When My Windows 365 Subscription Ends If you’re canceling a business tool or cloud storage, check what happens to your data before confirming.

Save the confirmation email or screenshot the cancellation screen. If a charge shows up on your next statement anyway, that record is your evidence.

How to Get a Refund

Canceling stops future charges, not the most recent one. No federal law requires pro-rated refunds for unused subscription time, so whether you get money back depends on the platform.

Apple

Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, choose “Request a refund,” pick a reason, select the charge, and submit. Apple usually responds within 48 hours. You can’t request a refund on a pending charge — wait for the receipt email first.7Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple

Google Play

Go to play.google.com, find the charge in your purchase history, and follow the refund request prompts. The process varies by what you bought and how recent the charge is.8Google Play Help. Learn About Google Play Refund Policies

Direct-Billed Subscriptions

Check the company’s refund policy on their website. Many won’t refund partial periods, but some will if you contact them right after an unwanted renewal. It’s worth asking.

When a Company Won’t Let You Cancel

Some companies bury the option, force you into a phone call, or run you through retention offers. If the normal process isn’t working, you have two direct ways to stop the money.

Stop Payment Through Your Bank

You have a legal right to stop preauthorized recurring charges from a bank account. Your bank must honor a stop-payment order if you submit it at least three business days before the next scheduled charge. The request can be oral or written, though the bank may require written confirmation within 14 days of an oral request.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers

Banks usually charge a fee. And a stop payment blocks the money, not the subscription itself. The company may still consider you subscribed and could send the account to collections. Use it as a backup while you keep working on the actual cancellation.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Stop Automatic Payments From My Bank Account

Chargeback on Your Credit Card

If a company charges your card after cancellation, or charges you without consent after a free trial, dispute it as a billing error. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have 60 days from the date the statement containing the charge was sent to submit a written dispute. The card issuer must acknowledge within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors

The FTC specifically advises consumers to file a chargeback when a company charges without consent or refuses to stop charging after a cancellation request.12Federal Trade Commission. Getting In and Out of Free Trials, Auto-Renewals, and Negative Option Subscriptions

File a Complaint

File with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov/complaint. If your bank account is involved, also file with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint. These won’t resolve your case on their own, but they build the record regulators use to act against repeat offenders.

Free Trials That Become Paid Subscriptions

Free trials are the most common source of unwanted charges. You sign up for a seven-day trial, forget, and start paying. Companies are required to clearly disclose when a trial converts, what it will cost, and how to cancel before they take your payment information.12Federal Trade Commission. Getting In and Out of Free Trials, Auto-Renewals, and Negative Option Subscriptions

The practical move: cancel the trial the same day you start it. On both Apple and Google Play, canceling immediately still lets you use the trial for its full duration. It just won’t renew when the trial ends.
