To cancel an app subscription on Apple devices, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select the app, and tap Cancel Subscription. The path is nearly identical on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro, slightly different on a Mac, and also available from any web browser. The traps are not in the steps but in the timing: free trials bill if you wait too long, annual commitments keep charging after you cancel, and some app subscriptions aren’t handled by Apple at all.
Cancel on iPhone or iPad
This is the route most people need.
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions. You’ll see every active and recently expired subscription tied to your Apple Account.
- Tap the subscription you want to end.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down. If you see an expiration date in red text instead, it’s already canceled.
Confirm when prompted. The subscription stops renewing, but you keep access through the end of the period you already paid for.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
Cancel on a Mac
On macOS, subscriptions live in the App Store, not System Settings.
- Open the App Store and click your name in the bottom-left corner.
- Click Account Settings at the top. Sign in again if asked.
- Find the Manage section and click Manage next to Subscriptions.
- Click Edit next to the subscription, then Cancel Subscription, and confirm.
Access continues through the current billing period and no further charges apply.2Apple Support. Cancel, Change, or Share Subscriptions in the App Store on Mac
Cancel on Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Apple Vision Pro
Each follows the same pattern: Settings, your name, Subscriptions.
Apple Watch
Open Settings on your watch, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the app, and tap Cancel Subscription. Some subscriptions can only be managed from the paired iPhone. If the cancel option isn’t there, use your phone.3Apple. Apple Watch User Guide
Apple Vision Pro
Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select the subscription, and tap Cancel Subscription or Cancel All Services.4Apple Support. Manage App Store Purchases, Subscriptions, Settings, and Restrictions on Apple Vision Pro
Apple TV
Go to Settings, scroll to Subscriptions, choose Manage, select the subscription, and choose Cancel Subscription.
Cancel From a Web Browser
No Apple device handy? Go to account.apple.com/account/manage/section/subscriptions from any browser, sign in with your Apple Account, find the subscription, and cancel it. This works on Windows, Android, or anything with a browser.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
Free Trials: Cancel at Least 24 Hours Early
The most common surprise charge comes from a forgotten free trial. Apple’s rule is simple: cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Wait until the last day and the system may have already queued the payment.
A safer habit is to sign up for the trial and cancel it right away. You keep access for the full trial period, the subscription doesn’t convert to paid, and the button flips to a resubscribe option in case you decide you want it.
Annual Commitments Keep Billing After You Cancel
Some apps offer a lower monthly price in exchange for a 12-month commitment. Canceling one of these works differently than canceling a regular monthly plan. Tapping Cancel Subscription stops the plan from renewing at the end of the year, but it does not stop the remaining monthly charges inside the current commitment. You’ll keep being billed every month until the 12 months are up.5Apple Support. Get Additional Payment Options With a Subscription Commitment
You keep full access until the commitment ends, and nothing renews afterward. Check whether a subscription has a commitment before you assume cancellation means the charges stop immediately.
What Changes After You Cancel
In your subscription list, the renewal date is replaced with an expiration date. You keep using the app or service until that date, since the current period is already paid for.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
After it expires, the subscription moves to an Expired section. You can’t manually delete entries there; they disappear on their own about a year later. If you decide to come back, tap the same subscription and pick a new plan.
If the Subscription Isn’t in Your Apple List
Not every subscription you use on an iPhone is billed by Apple. Services like Netflix and Spotify often take payment directly through their own websites, outside the App Store. If you signed up on a company’s site or through a payment link that didn’t go through the App Store, the subscription won’t appear in your Apple subscriptions at all.
Check your email for recurring receipts. If the charges on your bank statement come from the company directly rather than from “Apple.com/bill,” you’ll need to cancel on that company’s website or app. Apple can’t stop a charge it doesn’t process.
Requesting a Refund for an Unexpected Charge
If a renewal hit that you didn’t expect, you can ask Apple for a refund.
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in.
- Choose “I’d like to” and select “Request a refund.”
- Pick a reason, tap Next, select the charge, and submit.
Apple usually sends a status update within 24 to 48 hours.6Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple When it’s approved, the time to see the money depends on how you paid: store credit refunds usually appear within 48 hours, credit and debit card refunds can take up to 30 days, and mobile carrier billing can take up to 60.7Apple Support. Not every request is approved. Accidental renewals and clearly unintended subscriptions are the most common successful claims, and submitting soon after the charge helps your odds.
Family Sharing: Canceling Affects Everyone
If you’re the family organizer and the subscription is shared through Family Sharing, canceling cuts off access for every family member, not just you. The same applies to bundled plans like Apple One. When the organizer cancels or leaves the family group, members lose shared services and purchases at the same time.8Apple Support. How to Leave or Remove a Member From a Family Sharing Group
Downloaded apps and content don’t vanish, but family members won’t be able to update shared apps or use the related in-app purchases unless they buy the apps themselves. A heads-up before you cancel avoids a bad morning.
