To cancel app subscriptions on an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the service, and tap Cancel Subscription. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds and happens entirely on your phone, with no call to the developer or to Apple. Do it at least 24 hours before the next renewal date, or you’ll be billed for another cycle.
The Steps in Settings
This is the fastest route, and it works for any subscription Apple bills on your behalf, whether that’s streaming, fitness, cloud storage, or a game.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap the subscription you want to cancel.
- Tap Cancel Subscription.
Scroll down on the subscription’s detail page if you don’t see the button right away. Plan options and the renewal date sit above it. If there’s no Cancel Subscription button at all, or you see an expiration message in red, the subscription is already canceled.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
The App Store Route
If you’re already in the App Store, you can get to the same list without going through Settings:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription.
Both paths read from the same subscription list tied to your Apple Account, so the result is identical.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
What Happens After You Cancel
Canceling doesn’t cut off access right away. You keep the premium features through the end of the period you already paid for. Cancel a monthly subscription on day five and you still have it through day 30. During that window the list shows the subscription as “Canceled” rather than “Expired.”1Apple Support. Once the paid period ends, the status flips to “Expired” and the premium features turn off. Apple emails a confirmation to the address on your account. Keep that email. If you get charged again later, it’s your evidence for a dispute.
Canceling a Free Trial Before It Charges You
To avoid being billed when a free or discounted trial converts, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Apple runs the renewal charge inside that final 24-hour window, so waiting until the last day usually means the charge has already gone through.1Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple
For third-party app trials bought through the App Store, canceling early doesn’t end your access. The trial features stay available until the original end date. Apple’s own service trials, such as Apple TV+, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade, have at times behaved differently, with some users reporting that access ends immediately after an early cancellation. If you want the full trial period on an Apple service, set a reminder and cancel on the second-to-last day instead of right after signing up.
When a Subscription Isn’t in Your List
Not every recurring charge runs through Apple. Services like Netflix, Spotify, or Amazon Prime often bill you directly, and those won’t appear under Settings > Subscriptions.
Search your email for “receipt from Apple” or “invoice from Apple” to confirm whether Apple actually billed you. No Apple receipt means the company is charging you themselves, and you’ll need to cancel on their website or in their app. Your bank or card statement will show the billing company’s name.1Apple Support. Hiding an app from your purchase history doesn’t hide its subscription. The subscription still shows up in Settings and can be canceled the normal way.2Apple Support. Hide and Unhide Apps in Your App Store Purchase List
Family Sharing
With Family Sharing, each person’s subscriptions are tied to their own Apple Account. The family organizer sees charges on the shared payment method but cannot cancel another family member’s subscription for them. Whoever signed up has to cancel from their own account.1Apple Support. Getting a Refund for a Charge You Already Paid
Canceling stops future charges. It doesn’t refund the most recent one. If you were billed for a renewal you didn’t want, or for a subscription you thought was already canceled, file a refund request separately:
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in.
- Select “I’d like to” and choose “Request a refund.”
- Pick a reason and tap Next.
- Select the specific charge and tap Submit.
Apple typically responds within 24 to 48 hours.3Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple You can’t file against a charge that’s still pending, so wait for the email receipt first. Check the status at reportaproblem.apple.com whenever you want.4Apple Support.
