To cancel an AutoPay mandate in PhonePe, open the app, scroll to Manage Payments on the home screen, tap View All, then tap AutoPay. Select the mandate you want to remove, tap Delete AutoPay, and confirm with your UPI PIN. Future automatic debits from your bank account stop right away. One thing worth knowing before you tap through: canceling the mandate in PhonePe closes the payment pipeline, but it does not end your subscription or service agreement with the merchant.
The Steps in Order
Open PhonePe and scroll down on the home screen until you see the Manage Payments section. Tap View All on the right side of that section, then choose AutoPay. This screen lists every active recurring mandate linked to your account.
Tap the specific mandate you want to cancel. You’ll see the merchant name, the linked bank account, the debit frequency, and the maximum amount authorized per cycle. If you have several mandates, check these details carefully so you don’t accidentally remove one you still need.
On the mandate details screen, tap Delete AutoPay. The exact wording can shift with app updates. PhonePe will ask you to confirm, then prompt you for your UPI PIN. That PIN entry is a UPI-level security step to verify you’re the account holder authorizing the change. Wait for the confirmation screen before closing the app.
Canceling the Mandate Is Not the Same as Canceling the Subscription
A UPI autopay mandate is a payment instruction that gives a merchant permission to pull money from your bank account on a schedule. It sits separately from the service agreement you signed up for. If you cancel the mandate in PhonePe but never cancel the subscription with the merchant, the merchant may still treat your account as active, attempt to collect through other means, or mark your account past due.
To fully end a recurring service, do both: cancel the subscription with the merchant through their app, website, or support channel, and revoke the autopay mandate in PhonePe. Doing only one leaves a loose end. This matters most for services with contractual terms like insurance premiums or loan EMIs, where the obligation to pay doesn’t disappear because you blocked the payment method.
How to Confirm the Cancellation Went Through
Go back to the AutoPay section after you’ve completed the steps. The mandate should no longer show up under your active list. PhonePe usually sends an in-app notification confirming the revocation, and your bank may send an SMS confirming the mandate has been removed at the banking level.
If neither confirmation arrives within a few minutes, open AutoPay again and check the status. A mandate stuck in pending, or still showing as active, means the cancellation didn’t go through. Retry the deletion, or contact PhonePe support.
Any payment scheduled for a date after your cancellation will not be processed. Money already debited earlier that day or during the current billing cycle is not refunded automatically. For anything already pulled, you’ll need to take it up with the merchant.
Be Careful With Loan EMI AutoPay
Canceling autopay for a streaming service is low stakes. Canceling it for a loan EMI is not. The mandate is only the delivery mechanism for your EMI payment; your obligation to the lender continues. If you cancel and then miss the due date, the costs stack up fast.
- Late payment fees, commonly ₹500 to ₹1,000 per missed payment, plus penal interest on the overdue amount.
- Credit score damage. A single missed payment can drop your CIBIL score by 50 to 100 points, and lenders typically report to credit bureaus once dues stay unpaid beyond 30 days.
- NPA classification. An EMI unpaid for more than 90 days can push the account to Non-Performing Asset status, which makes future borrowing much harder.
If you’re switching banks or payment methods, set up the replacement mandate or arrange manual payment before revoking the old one. Don’t leave a gap.
Pause the Mandate Instead of Deleting It
PhonePe and UPI more broadly support pausing a mandate rather than deleting it. This helps if you want to stop payments temporarily for something you plan to resume later, like a gym membership during a long trip. Pausing keeps the mandate on file, so you don’t have to set it up from scratch with fresh authorization.
Look for a Pause or Modify option on the mandate details screen instead of Delete. Not every merchant supports pausing. If the option isn’t there, your only choices are to keep the mandate active or cancel it. Cancel now and want to restart later? You’ll go through the full mandate setup again, including a fresh UPI PIN authorization. 1BHIM UPI. UPI Autopay
