To cancel a ChatGPT Plus subscription, open chatgpt.com, click your profile icon, go to Settings, open Billing, and click Cancel. That works if you signed up directly with a card. If you subscribed through the iPhone or Android app, the web won’t let you cancel at all — you have to go back to Apple or Google.
Cancel on the Web
If you paid OpenAI directly through chatgpt.com, four clicks end the subscription:
- Log in at chatgpt.com.
- Click your profile icon and select Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Under Cancel plan, click Cancel.

Take a screenshot of the confirmation. If a charge somehow appears later, that screenshot is your proof.
If You Paid Through Apple or Google
This is where most people get stuck. Subscriptions bought inside the iPhone or Android app are billed by Apple or Google, not OpenAI, so the web cancel button either won’t appear or won’t work. Deleting the ChatGPT app does nothing. The charges keep running until you cancel on the platform that took your money.
On an iPhone

On Android
Open the Google Play Store, go to your subscriptions, select ChatGPT, and tap Cancel subscription.3Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play Make sure you’re signed into the same Google account that originally paid.
Not Sure Which One?
Search your email for the original purchase confirmation; the sender tells you where you subscribed. Your bank statement works too: Apple charges show up as “APPLE.COM/BILL,” and Google Play charges appear as “GOOGLE*” followed by the app name. Cancel at Least 24 Hours Before Your Renewal Date
OpenAI recommends canceling at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid being charged for another cycle.1OpenAI Help Center. What You Keep After Canceling
Canceling doesn’t cut access immediately. Plus features stay active through the end of the period you already paid for, and the cancellation takes effect the day after your next billing date.1OpenAI Help Center. How Do I Cancel My ChatGPT Subscription
After that, your account drops to the free tier. You lose the higher usage limits and Plus-exclusive features, but the free version still works. Conversation history, custom instructions, and uploaded files stay in the account. Canceling doesn’t delete anything.
If the Cancel Button Is Missing
Almost always, a missing cancel button means you’re on the wrong platform. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, the web portal won’t show the option. Same with Google Play. Go back to where you originally paid.
For web subscribers, the cancel option can be understated — a small link under a “Cancel plan” heading rather than a prominent button. Scroll down. If the link genuinely isn’t there, try clearing your browser cache, switching browsers, or disabling ad-blocking extensions that may interfere with the Stripe portal.
Ask Support to Cancel for You

- The email address on the account.
- The last four digits of the payment card on file.
- The date of your most recent subscription payment.

Can You Get a Refund?
OpenAI’s general policy is that subscription payments are non-refundable. Cancel mid-cycle and you keep access through the end of the period, but you don’t get money back for unused days. A few exceptions:
- Accidental purchases are generally eligible for a refund if you contact OpenAI within 14 days of the charge.
- EU, UK, and Turkey residents are entitled to a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase.
- Apple subscription refunds must be requested from Apple, not OpenAI.

Canceling Is Not the Same as Deleting Your Account
Canceling stops future charges and leaves the account on the free tier with your history intact. Team and Business Plans
