To cancel ChatGPT Plus, go to whichever company actually bills you each month and cancel there: OpenAI if you subscribed on the web, Apple if you signed up in the iPhone or iPad app, or Google if you signed up on Android. First, Find Out Who Charges You
This is the step people skip, and it’s the one that causes every failed cancellation. OpenAI, Apple, and Google each run their own billing, and you can only cancel through the one that took your money.
Check your bank or card statement. A line showing “OPENAI” means OpenAI bills you directly. “APPLE.COM/BILL” means Apple. “GOOGLE” means the Play Store. You can also open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Billing: if you see a cancel option on that page, OpenAI is your provider. If the page tells you the subscription came from another platform, that’s where you need to go.
Cancel on the ChatGPT Website
If OpenAI bills you directly, cancel inside ChatGPT:
- Log in at chatgpt.com.
- Click your profile icon and select Settings.
- Select Billing.
- Under Cancel plan, click Cancel and confirm.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad
Apple subscriptions can’t be canceled from inside the ChatGPT app. Use your device settings:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Cancel on Android
Google Play works the same way as Apple: cancel outside the ChatGPT app.
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Tap Google, then your name, then Manage your Google Account.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Manage subscriptions.
- Tap ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

What Happens Next

Your chat history, saved conversations, and any custom GPTs stay in your account. Nothing is deleted because you downgraded, and you can resubscribe later from the same account without losing anything.
Can You Get a Refund?
OpenAI’s terms say subscription payments are non-refundable, except where local law requires otherwise.5OpenAI. Terms of Use A few situations still qualify:
- Accidental purchases are generally refundable if you contact OpenAI support within 14 days of the charge.
- Billing errors, including duplicate charges, unauthorized transactions, and charges after a confirmed cancellation, are usually corrected once verified.
- Residents of the EU, UK, and Turkey are entitled under consumer protection law to a refund if they cancel within 14 days of the initial purchase.
For web and Google Play purchases, request a refund at help.openai.com using the chat widget in the bottom-right corner. If Something Goes Wrong
There’s No Cancel Button
You subscribed through Apple or Google rather than OpenAI directly. The settings page in ChatGPT will usually say so. Cancel through your device’s subscription settings instead.
You Were Charged After Canceling
Check the timing first. Cancellation takes effect after your next billing date, so a charge that lands on the billing date itself may be the last legitimate payment for access you’ll still receive. If a charge truly posts after your confirmed cancellation date, contact OpenAI support through the help center chat widget, or dispute the charge with Apple or Google if either of them is the billing provider. Canceling Is Not the Same as Deleting Your Account
Canceling stops future charges and drops you to the free tier. Deleting your account removes your data, chat history, and login. If you only want to stop paying, cancel; don’t delete. And if you do delete, know this: deleting your OpenAI account automatically cancels a web subscription, but it does not cancel an App Store or Play Store subscription.
