How to Cancel City Sports Membership: Channels, Timing, and Fees

To cancel your City Sports Club membership, submit a cancellation request online through your member account, by certified mail to the Irvine P.O. box, or in person at any club location — and do it at least five business days before your next billing date so you aren’t charged for another month.1City Sports Fitness. Health Club Member Services – Membership Questions Most memberships run month-to-month with no termination fee once you’re past any initial contract term.

The Three Cancellation Channels

City Sports accepts cancellation three ways, and all three are equally valid.1City Sports Fitness. Health Club Member Services – Membership Questions The method matters less than the proof you walk away with.

Online Through Your Member Account

Log in on the City Sports website and follow the cancellation steps. This is the fastest route and creates a digital record. Screenshot the confirmation screen and save any email receipt. If your enrollment agreement allows email cancellation (some do, depending on your state), that counts too.

By Certified Mail

Send a written cancellation notice to City Sports Club, P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619. Use USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested so you have proof of when the club received your letter and who signed for it.2United States Postal Service. Certified Mail – The Basics Include your full name, membership ID number, and the date you want cancellation to take effect. Keep a copy of the letter and the tracking receipt together.

In Person at a Club

Walk into any City Sports location and ask the front desk to cancel. Before you leave, ask for a printed confirmation showing the date of your request, the effective cancellation date, and a staff member’s signature. That receipt is your evidence if a charge shows up later. Without it, you’re trusting the club’s internal records.

Getting the Timing Right

City Sports uses a five-business-day cutoff rather than the 30-day notice some chains require. A cancellation that’s postmarked or submitted at least five business days before your next billing date should stop further charges.1City Sports Fitness. Health Club Member Services – Membership Questions

Cut it closer than that and you may get billed one more time. City Sports says it will refund that extra charge, but you’ll likely need to follow up. This is why your dated confirmation matters — it fixes the exact submission date, which decides whether any further billing was legitimate.

If You Signed a Fixed-Term Contract

Most memberships are month-to-month, so you can leave without owing anything beyond your current cycle. Contracts with an initial term of three months or more work differently:1City Sports Fitness. Health Club Member Services – Membership Questions

  • Past the initial term: cancel anytime with no fee.
  • Still within the initial term, cancellation submitted: it won’t take effect until the term ends, and billing continues until then.
  • Want out before the term ends: a termination fee applies. City Sports doesn’t publish the amount, so pull your original contract or ask the club what you’d owe.

If you no longer have your contract, request a copy from the front desk. The club keeps your agreement on file, and you need the actual terms before you decide between paying the early-termination fee and finishing out the months.

If You Just Signed Up: California’s Cooling-Off Windows

Because City Sports operates in California, state health studio law gives new members a cancellation window regardless of what the contract itself says. You can cancel within five business days of the contract date and get a full refund, less the cost of any services you actually used.3California Legislative Information. California Code Civil Code 1812.85 The club must return your money within 10 days of receiving the notice.

Higher-value contracts come with longer windows:4Department of Consumer Affairs. Overview of California’s Health Studio Services Contract Law

  • $1,500 to $2,000 total contract value: 20 days.
  • $2,001 to $2,500: 30 days.
  • $2,501 or more: 45 days.

To use the cooling-off right, mail, email, or hand-deliver a signed, dated cancellation notice to the club. If you’re inside any of these windows, there’s nothing to negotiate and no termination fee to pay.

Canceling for Medical Disability or a Move

California law provides two more grounds for walking away from a fixed-term contract without paying the full balance.

If a physical disability prevents you from using the facilities, you can cancel and owe nothing further. The club may ask for a doctor’s note verifying the condition, so get one on official letterhead stating clearly that you cannot participate in physical exercise. Any prepaid amounts for unused services must be refunded pro rata.4Department of Consumer Affairs. Overview of California’s Health Studio Services Contract Law

If you move more than 25 miles from the club and can’t transfer to a comparable facility, you’re released from future payments.5California Legislative Information. California Code Civil Code CIV 1812.89 The club can charge a cancellation fee of up to $100, or up to $50 if more than half the contract term has already passed. Any remaining prepaid balance beyond that fee must be refunded. Keep proof of your new address — a lease, utility bill, or change-of-address confirmation — in case the club questions the move.

If You’re Still Being Billed After Canceling

You canceled, you have the receipt, and charges keep hitting your account. Don’t rely on the club’s customer service line alone.

Send copies of your cancellation confirmation and delivery receipts to the club’s corporate address and ask for a written response. Then dispute the charges with your card issuer or bank.

Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have 60 days from the date a disputed charge appears on your statement to dispute it in writing with your credit card issuer.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors Your dispute letter should list your name, account number, the charge amount, and the reason it’s wrong — that you canceled on a specific date and have proof. The issuer cannot try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent while the investigation is open.

If the gym pulls payments by ACH debit from a checking account instead of a credit card, contact your bank to revoke the recurring authorization. Most banks can stop future drafts from a specific merchant.

If charges keep coming after all of that, file a complaint with the California Department of Consumer Affairs, and consider contacting your county district attorney’s consumer protection division. Your certified mail receipt or timestamped in-person confirmation is the kind of documentation these offices rely on.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If your reason for leaving is temporary — travel, a short-term injury, a stretch where you won’t use the gym — ask about placing the membership on hold. Freezing keeps your current rate locked in, which matters if you signed up at a promotional price no longer offered. The freeze fee and maximum duration depend on your contract, so check your agreement or ask the club. If your reason for leaving isn’t temporary, don’t let a freeze offer talk you out of a clean cancellation.
