How to Cancel Discount Power Service: Fees, Final Bill, and Deposit

To cancel Discount Power, call customer service at 1-877-455-4674 or email Feedback@DiscountPowerTX.com with your account number, Electric Service Identifier (ESIID), and the date you want service to stop. Most requests process within a few business days. Whether you owe an early termination fee depends on your specific plan, but Texas rules waive the fee in two situations: you’re moving, or you’re within 14 days of your contract’s expiration.

Get Your Account Details Together

Pull a recent bill or log into your online account and write down three things: the name on the account, the account number, and the ESIID. The ESIID is a 22-digit number tied to your meter and appears on every statement. Decide on your preferred stop date, which is the day you want Discount Power to stop supplying electricity to your address.

If you’re switching to another provider instead of disconnecting, your new provider will also ask for the ESIID. Having it ready for both calls keeps the process moving.

How to Submit the Cancellation

The fastest route is the phone. Discount Power’s customer service line is 1-877-455-4674, open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time.1Discount Power. Customer Care An automated system will ask for your account number before connecting you to a representative. Tell the agent whether you’re moving or switching providers, confirm your preferred stop date, and ask for a confirmation number before you hang up. That number is your proof the request was submitted, and you’ll want it if anything goes wrong with the final bill.

You can also email Feedback@DiscountPowerTX.com. Include your full name, account number, service address, ESIID, and requested stop date. Email creates a written record on its own, but responses run slower than a call. If your stop date is less than a week away, call.

Switching Providers vs. Moving Out

The two situations look similar from your end but work differently behind the scenes.

Switching to a New Provider at the Same Address

If you’re staying put and just changing retail electric providers, you usually don’t need to call Discount Power at all. Your new provider submits the switch through the Texas grid system, and Discount Power is notified automatically. The switch takes effect at your next meter read. Your electricity never shuts off during the transition because the physical delivery (handled by your local utility, like Oncor or CenterPoint) doesn’t change. Only the billing company changes.

One snag can block the switch: a “switch hold.” If you have an unpaid balance or an active deferred payment plan with Discount Power, your meter can be restricted from provider changes until you clear the debt or finish the plan.

Moving Out of the Address

If you’re leaving the property, you need to contact Discount Power directly to submit a move-out request. Give at least a few business days of lead time before your stop date. On that date, Discount Power stops billing you for energy at the address. Either the next occupant enrolls in service or the meter goes inactive, and if nobody enrolls the local utility may eventually disconnect it.

When You Owe an Early Termination Fee, and When You Don’t

Whether a fee applies comes down to the plan you signed. Month-to-month contracts in Texas cannot include a termination fee.2Legal Information Institute. The 14-Day Penalty-Free Window

No termination penalty applies during the 14 days before your contract’s expiration date. Your provider has to send at least three written notices during the final third of the contract reminding you when the plan expires, and for contracts longer than four months, the final notice must arrive at least 30 days before expiration.2Legal Information Institute. Texas Code 16 TAC 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers Check your expiration date. If it’s close, timing your switch to fall in that 14-day window can save real money.

Moving Waives the Fee

Texas rules say you cannot be charged an early termination fee if you’re relocating, as long as you give Discount Power a forwarding address and, if asked, reasonable proof that you no longer live at the service address.2Legal Information Institute. Texas Code 16 TAC 25.475 – General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers A signed lease for your new place or a closing document usually satisfies this. If a representative tries to charge you anyway, cite the rule and ask for a supervisor.

The Final Bill and Your Deposit

After your stop date, Discount Power generates a final bill covering usage from the last billing cycle through disconnection. The meter read may be actual or estimated. Estimates can run high or low, so compare the billed kilowatt-hours against your typical monthly use and ask for a correction if the number looks off.

If you paid a security deposit, Texas rules require the provider to promptly refund it plus accrued interest, minus any unpaid balance. The rule doesn’t define “promptly” with a specific day count, but if weeks pass with no refund and no communication, you have grounds to file a complaint. The refund may arrive as a check mailed to your forwarding address or a credit to the payment method on file.

Turn Off Auto-Pay at the Right Time

Automatic payments don’t stop just because you’ve asked to cancel service. The system can still draft your bank account or charge your card for the final bill, which catches people off guard when the amount is higher than usual because of prorated charges or deposit adjustments.

The safest approach is to leave auto-pay on through the final bill cycle so your last balance clears, then confirm with Discount Power that no further charges will be drafted. If you’d rather handle the final payment yourself, contact both Discount Power and your bank to revoke the auto-pay authorization before the final bill generates, and follow up the phone call in writing so you have documentation.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Stop Automatic Payments From My Bank Account Your bank may suggest a stop payment order, which blocks future drafts from the company but can carry a fee.

Canceling auto-pay doesn’t cancel your service, and it doesn’t erase your obligation to pay the final bill. Those are separate steps.

If Something Goes Wrong

Most cancellations finish without trouble, but disputes over final charges or termination fees do come up. Start by calling Discount Power and referencing your confirmation number. If the representative can’t resolve it, ask for a supervisor and document every conversation with names, dates, and what was said.

If that doesn’t work, you can file an informal complaint with the Public Utility Commission of Texas. The PUC will want confirmation that you already tried to resolve the issue with Discount Power first. File online through the PUC’s complaint portal or call 1-888-782-8477. Have your account number, ESIID, copies of any disputed bills, and a clear description of the problem and the outcome you want.5Public Utility Commission of Texas.
