How to Cancel Equinox Membership: Notice, Fees, and Exceptions

To cancel an Equinox membership, you have four options: speak with a club manager in person at your home club, email Cancellations@Equinox.com, send written notice by mail, or cancel through your account on Equinox.com.1Equinox. Account Information, Guest Passes & Referral FAQs What you actually pay on the way out depends on your notice period, whether you’re still inside your 12-month commitment, and the consumer protection rules in your state.

The Four Cancellation Channels

  • In person. Visit your home club and ask for a club manager. Paperwork gets handled on the spot and you leave with confirmation in hand.
  • Email. Send your request to Cancellations@Equinox.com. Include your full name, home club, and the email tied to your account. Save the sent message and any reply.
  • Mail. Send a written cancellation notice to your club’s address by certified mail with return receipt requested. The dated return receipt is your proof of when the notice period started if a dispute comes up later.
  • Online. Log in at Equinox.com and use the cancellation option inside your account settings.

Your membership agreement may list additional methods depending on where you live, so check the agreement for anything specific to your state.1Equinox. Account Information, Guest Passes & Referral FAQs

What to Put in the Request

Whichever channel you use, include your full legal name, the email on your account, your home club, and your member ID (on your key fob or in the Equinox app). If you’re writing by email or mail, state plainly that you are requesting cancellation and include the date. A line like “I am providing written notice to cancel my Equinox membership effective as of today’s date” leaves no room for interpretation.

Watch for a confirmation email showing your official end date. If nothing arrives within a few business days, follow up. Without written confirmation, you have no proof the cancellation is in motion, and dues can keep coming.

Notice Period and Final Billing

Equinox requires a notice period before the membership actually ends, and the length depends on your state and your specific contract.1Equinox. Account Information, Guest Passes & Referral FAQs Your agreement spells out the exact timeframe. Check it before you cancel, because the notice period decides how many more billing cycles you’ll pay.

Expect at least one more charge during that window. It’s a legitimate charge under the contract, so a bank dispute will usually fail. Your access to the club, classes, and amenities stays active through the notice period. When the termination date passes, your key fob and app access deactivate and dues stop.

Canceling Inside the 12-Month Commitment

Most Equinox memberships open with a 12-month commitment.2Equinox. Equinox Member Policies Cancel before the year is up without a qualifying reason and you’ll likely owe an early termination fee. The exact amount depends on your contract and location; members report anything from a flat charge to a prorated balance of the remaining months. After the initial commitment ends, the membership typically converts to month-to-month, and canceling means giving only the required notice.

Read the termination language in your agreement before deciding. It usually sits in the first few pages. Knowing the number ahead of time lets you weigh canceling now against riding out the rest of the term.

Penalty-Free Cancellation for Relocation or Medical Reasons

Relocation

If you move more than 25 miles from your home club or your preferred club, Equinox lets you cancel at any point during or after the 12-month commitment without an early termination fee.2Equinox. Equinox Member Policies You’ll need reasonable proof of the new address: a signed lease, utility bill, or bank statement usually works. If your new city still has an Equinox nearby, expect pushback. Some members report being asked for additional documentation, so bring more than one piece of evidence if you have it.

Medical Inability

A medical condition that prevents you from using the gym also qualifies for penalty-free cancellation. You’ll need a signed note from a licensed physician stating you can no longer use gym facilities. Submit it alongside your cancellation request through any of the standard channels. Equinox’s member policies reserve the right to modify these provisions, so confirm the current requirements with your club manager before you send anything in.2Equinox. Equinox Member Policies

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If you’re not sure you want to leave for good, a freeze may fit better. Equinox allows one non-medical freeze per contract year for up to 90 consecutive days. A non-refundable fee applies, and billing pauses during the freeze. The freeze does not reset or shorten your 12-month commitment, and you can’t use it to sidestep the notice period for a full cancellation.2Equinox. Equinox Member Policies For a long trip or a minor injury, freezing preserves your rate and avoids rejoining later at a higher price.

State Consumer Protection Rights

Your state’s health club laws may give you cancellation rights that override the contract. Many states require a cooling-off period after signup, typically three to ten business days, during which you can cancel for any reason and get a full refund. The federal FTC cooling-off rule generally does not apply to gym memberships, so this protection comes from state law.

Beyond cooling off, many states mandate penalty-free cancellation for relocation, medical disability, military deployment, or facility closure. Some cap how long a gym contract can run or require a month-to-month option. If Equinox refuses to cancel or charges fees that look unreasonable, check your state attorney general’s website for health club rules. Filing a consumer complaint with the attorney general’s office is free in most states and often moves faster than arguing with the club.

If Charges Continue After Your End Date

This is where your paper trail earns its keep. If dues hit after the confirmed end date, contact Equinox first with a copy of the confirmation email and ask for a reversal. If that fails, dispute the charge with your bank or credit card issuer and provide the confirmation and end date. Banks take these disputes seriously when the documentation shows the charge came after cancellation was complete.

Canceling properly, getting written confirmation, and disputing anything that arrives after your end date is the cleaner path. Blocking the payment method before you have a confirmed end date can backfire, since an unpaid balance the club believes is still owed under the contract can be sent to collections.
