To cancel a Family Handyman magazine subscription, call the publisher at 800-285-4961, log in to the online customer care portal, or mail a written request to the Harlan, Iowa service address. One exception matters before you pick a method: if you signed up through Amazon, Apple, or Google Play, the publisher can’t cancel for you and you’ll need to go through that platform instead.1Trusted Media Brands. FAQs
Find Your Account Number First
Your account number is printed on the mailing label of your physical magazine and on billing statements from the publisher. If you can’t find either, go to the customer care login page and enter your name and mailing address exactly as they appear on the label to look it up.1Trusted Media Brands. FAQs If nothing turns up, a phone rep can pull your account using your name and zip code.
Cancel by Phone
Call 800-285-4961 and ask the representative to cancel your subscription.1Trusted Media Brands. FAQs Have your account number or mailing address ready. Before you hang up, get a confirmation number and write it down. If you’re offered a discounted renewal or a free extension, you don’t have to accept it — a simple “no thank you, please proceed with the cancellation” is enough. Phone is the fastest option and the one that gives you confirmation on the spot.

Include your full name, mailing address, account number, and a clear statement that you want to cancel. Certified mail with a return receipt gives you dated proof the publisher received the request, which is useful if a billing dispute comes up later. Mail is the slowest route and can take several weeks to process, so skip it if your renewal date is close.
If You Subscribed Through Amazon, Apple, or Google Play
Family Handyman’s customer service cannot cancel a subscription billed by a third-party platform. You have to cancel where your payment is being processed.
Amazon
Open the “Your Memberships and Subscriptions” page in your Amazon account. Find the Family Handyman entry, select “Manage Subscription,” then choose “Cancel Subscription” under “Advanced Controls.”3Amazon Customer Service. Manage Your Amazon Subscriptions
Apple
On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then tap “Subscriptions.” Find Family Handyman, tap it, and select “Cancel Subscription.”4Apple Support. See Your Purchases and Subscriptions in the App Store on iPhone On a Mac, the same list is available through the App Store under your account settings.
Google Play
Open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, go to “Payments & Subscriptions,” then tap “Subscriptions.” Select the Family Handyman subscription and tap “Cancel Subscription.” Google may suggest pausing instead; pick the full cancellation if you want charges to stop.
What Happens After You Cancel
You may still receive one or two more physical issues. Mailing labels are printed weeks ahead of delivery, so anything already in the pipeline will arrive. It doesn’t mean your cancellation failed.
Prepaid subscriptions are typically refunded on a pro-rated basis. If you paid for a year and cancel halfway through, expect roughly half back, credited to your original payment method. Watch your card or bank statement over the next several weeks to confirm the refund posts. If you signed up through Amazon, Apple, or Google Play, the refund comes from that platform rather than from the publisher.
Digital access ends with the subscription. The publisher’s FAQ describes digital issues as “part of your annual subscription” and says issues are “added to your library for you to access at any time” while you’re subscribed.1Trusted Media Brands. FAQs Assume you’ll lose access to that library once the subscription ends, and download anything you want to keep before your cancellation takes effect.
If You’re Still Charged After Canceling
Call 800-285-4961 first and reference your confirmation number or the date you mailed your letter. Most post-cancellation charges are processing delays and a single call clears them up.
If the publisher won’t fix it, dispute the charge with your card issuer. You can file the dispute through your issuer’s online portal, by calling the number on the back of your card, or by sending a written dispute letter to the billing address on your statement.5Federal Trade Commission. How to Stop Subscriptions You Never Ordered Hold onto your cancellation confirmation, any emails from the publisher, and the statement showing the charge. Card issuers generally require disputes within 60 days of the statement containing the charge, so file quickly.
Federal law reinforces your position. The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act requires any seller using automatic renewal billing to provide “simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges” on a credit card, debit card, or bank account.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 8403
Canceling for a Deceased Subscriber
Call 800-285-4961 and explain the situation.1Trusted Media Brands. FAQs Have the subscriber’s name, mailing address, and whatever payment records you can find, such as a billing statement or a confirmation email. Representatives handle these requests routinely and can process a cancellation and refund without the original subscriber’s login credentials. A death certificate isn’t usually required for a magazine subscription, but having one on hand can move things along if you run into any resistance.
