How to Cancel Fit Factory Membership: Steps, Fees, and Exceptions

To cancel a Fit Factory membership, contact your home club in writing, follow the notice period your contract requires, and keep proof of delivery. Most members will owe at least one more month of dues after submitting notice, and those still inside a 12-month commitment may owe an early termination fee unless they qualify for a penalty-free exception under Massachusetts law. The steps below walk through what your contract controls, how to submit the request, and the rights that may let you cancel without a penalty.

Start With Your Membership Agreement

Two clauses in your contract control everything that follows: the minimum commitment period and the required notice window. If you signed a 12-month term, you are responsible for monthly dues through that period even if you want out early. Once the commitment ends, most agreements auto-renew month-to-month until you give written notice.

Gym contracts typically require one month’s written notice before cancellation takes effect. The notice period starts when the club receives your written request, not when you stop showing up, so a notice given today usually means one more monthly charge. If you cannot find your paper contract, go to your home club and ask for a copy before you do anything else.

How to Submit the Cancellation

Fit Factory handles membership changes at the club level. There is no centralized corporate cancellation email or phone number; the official instruction is to contact your local Fit Factory location directly.1Fit Factory Clubs. Contact Us

You have three practical ways to deliver the request:

  • In person. Go to the front desk at your home club and ask to speak with a manager. If they can process the cancellation on the spot, insist on a signed, dated copy of the form before you leave. Verbal requests without paperwork are where most billing disputes start.
  • Certified mail. Send a signed, dated cancellation letter by certified mail with return receipt requested to your home club’s address. The return receipt gives you a dated proof of delivery that holds up if the club later claims it never received notice.
  • Email. Some locations accept emailed requests sent to the general manager. Ask for a written reply confirming the cancellation. An unanswered email is not proof.

Whichever method you use, include your full name, your account or agreement number from your contract or a billing statement, and a plain statement that you are canceling. Keep copies of everything.

If You Just Signed, Use the Three-Day Cooling-Off Period

Massachusetts law requires every health club contract to include a right to cancel within three business days of receiving the written contract, with no penalty. Deliver a written cancellation notice in person or by certified or registered mail to the address on your contract, and return your contract forms, membership card, and any other membership documents with it. The club must refund everything you paid within 15 business days of receiving your cancellation.2General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Part I, Title XV, Chapter 93, Section 81

The Garland, Texas location operates under different state consumer rules, so members there should check their contract for the applicable cancellation window.

Canceling Without a Penalty: Medical, Relocation, and Other Grounds

Massachusetts law gives members several routes out of a health club contract regardless of where they are in the commitment period.3General Court of Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Laws Part I, Title XV, Chapter 93, Section 82

  • Medical disability. If a doctor certifies that a significant medical disability lasting more than three months prevents you from using the gym, you can cancel and get a refund for the unused portion of the contract.
  • Relocation. If you move your residence or workplace more than 25 miles from any Fit Factory location (or a similar gym that would honor your contract), you qualify. Expect to show a lease, mortgage document, or employer verification.
  • Death. A member’s estate can cancel the contract.
  • Facility closure or substantial change. If Fit Factory permanently closes your location, fails to open a planned one, or substantially changes how your club operates, you can cancel.

The club may keep a prorated share of the contract price for the time you actually used the facility, but it must refund the rest within 15 days of receiving your notice.3General Court of Massachusetts. Early Termination Fees When No Exception Applies

If you want out before your commitment ends and none of the penalty-free grounds apply, you will likely owe an early termination fee. The amount varies by contract. Some Fit Factory agreements charge one additional month’s dues; others require payment of the remaining balance on the term.

Read the specific clause before accepting a quoted number. If a manager tells you what you owe, ask them to point to the provision in your signed contract. Verbal numbers are not binding, and the written clause is what controls.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If your reason for leaving is temporary, such as a short-term injury, travel, or a tight stretch financially, freezing the membership keeps it active while pausing billing. A freeze avoids early termination fees and spares you from re-enrolling later at a potentially higher rate.

Freeze requests go through your home club manager.4Fit Factory Clubs. FAQs Freeze fees, maximum length, and required documentation are not published online and vary by location, so ask the manager to put the terms in writing before you agree.

Personal Training Is a Separate Contract

Canceling your gym membership does not automatically cancel personal training or other add-on services. These usually have their own agreements and cancellation rules. Prepaid training sessions are generally nonrefundable for unused appointments, so use them before you cancel. If a medical issue prevents you from completing sessions, ask about a refund of unused sessions with a doctor’s note; some locations will do it minus a processing fee, but the terms depend on the training contract itself.

What to Expect After You Submit

You should receive confirmation by email or in writing once the club processes the request. If a week passes with no response, follow up. Call the club, reference the date you submitted your request, and ask for written confirmation of the cancellation date and the final billing date.

Plan on at least one more monthly charge. Because of the notice period, cancellation typically takes effect at the end of the next full billing cycle after the club receives written notice. That last charge is the notice period doing its job, not a billing error.

Watch your bank or credit card statements for two full billing cycles past your confirmed cancellation date. If a charge posts after that, contact the club first with your confirmation in hand. If they will not resolve it, you can dispute the charge with your bank or card issuer. Documentation makes this straightforward: your cancellation letter, the certified mail receipt, and any written confirmation from the club.

Why Simply Stopping Payment Backfires

Canceling the card on file, removing the bank account from autopay, or ignoring the gym does not end the contract. Charges keep accruing against your account, and once the balance grows large enough, the club can send it to a collection agency. That collection account can appear on your credit report, and it can drag your score down for years regardless of the fact that the original debt came from a gym.

If you have already stopped paying and charges are still piling up, contact the club now and negotiate a formal cancellation. Paying some back dues to close the account cleanly is far better than letting the balance reach collections.
