To cancel a Fitness Quest membership, send written notice at least 30 days before your next billing date or contract end date, deliver it in a way that creates proof the gym received it, and then watch your statements to confirm the charges actually stop. Expect one more month of dues after you submit, and if you’re still inside a commitment term, expect an early termination fee on top.
Start With Your Contract
Pull your original agreement or open your member portal before you contact the gym. Two things determine what cancellation will cost you: the notice period, and whether you’re still inside a commitment term.
Most Fitness Quest contracts require 30 days’ written notice. On a one-year agreement, that notice has to arrive before your contract end date, or the membership typically rolls into a month-to-month plan at a higher rate instead of ending.1Quest Fitness. Quest Fitness Center – General Policies Because of the 30-day lag, plan on one final billing cycle after your request goes in.
Canceling before your commitment period ends triggers an early termination fee. At Quest Fitness, the fee is $175, or the remaining contract balance if that balance is less than $175.1Quest Fitness. Submit the Cancellation With Proof
The single most important part of canceling any gym membership is proof of delivery. Paperwork gets lost, staff turns over, and “we never received that” is the oldest line in the business. Whatever method you use, it should create a record you control.
Certified Mail
USPS certified mail with return receipt requested is the strongest option. The tracking number and signed receipt together prove someone at the gym accepted delivery. The letter should include your full name as it appears on the contract, your membership ID, your home facility, a clear statement that you are canceling, and the date you want cancellation to take effect. Photocopy everything before you seal the envelope.
In Person
Handing a cancellation form to a manager works only if you leave with a signed and dated copy, with the manager’s printed name and title on it. A verbal promise is worth nothing when charges show up two months later.
Some Fitness Quest locations accept email. Quest Fitness directs members to send medical exemption documentation to a specific email address.1Quest Fitness. No reply within a few business days? Follow up with certified mail.
Your Federal Click-to-Cancel Rights
If you joined online, the gym has to let you cancel online. The FTC’s click-to-cancel rule, which took full effect on May 14, 2025, requires any business offering recurring memberships to make cancellation at least as simple as the original signup.3Federal Register. Negative Option Rule A gym that signed you up with a few clicks cannot demand a certified letter to let you out.
The same logic covers other channels. If you joined by phone, the gym must take cancellations by phone. If you signed up in person, the gym still has to offer phone or online cancellation on top of any in-person process.3Federal Register. Negative Option Rule The gym cannot force you to speak with a live representative to cancel if you didn’t speak with one to sign up. If your location is making cancellation unreasonably difficult, you can file a complaint with the FTC.
State, Medical, and Relocation Exits
About 40 states have health club laws that give you cancellation rights beyond what your contract says. The most common is a cooling-off period of roughly three to five business days after signing, during which you can cancel without penalty and get a full refund. Whether you have this right depends on your state.
Many of those same laws also let you out if you become physically unable to use the gym, or if you move beyond a set distance from any facility, often 25 miles. These exits generally apply even inside a commitment term, but you need documentation. For a medical cancellation, Quest Fitness requires notes from your healthcare provider plus a signed letter explaining the reason, submitted by email.1Quest Fitness. Military Deployment and PCS Orders
Active-duty servicemembers who receive orders to relocate for 90 days or more to a location without a Fitness Quest facility can cancel with no early termination fee. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act specifically lists gym memberships as a covered contract, and the same protection applies to permanent change of station orders.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 50 USC 3956 – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts
Deliver a written cancellation notice with a copy of your orders. The gym has to refund any prepaid fees for the period after the cancellation date within 60 days, and charging an early termination fee on a servicemember cancellation is illegal.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 50 USC 3956 – Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts If you’re the primary account holder on a family plan, family members who move with you are covered too.
Freeze Instead if the Reason Is Temporary
If you’re canceling because of travel, a short-term injury, or a tight month, a freeze may serve you better. Freezing pauses access and dues for a small hold fee, typically around $10 to $15 per month. Freeze periods usually cap at six months in any 12-month window, and billing restarts automatically when the freeze ends.
Medical freezes often come with better terms. With a doctor’s note, some locations waive the hold fee and allow longer durations. The practical advantage: you keep your original rate. Cancel and rejoin later and you’ll usually pay the current rate plus a new enrollment fee.
Confirm the Cancellation and Watch Your Statements
Submitting the request is only half the job. After the notice period runs out, check your bank and credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles. Gyms use third-party billing companies, and those systems don’t always catch cancellations on the first pass.
Call or email the corporate office and ask for written confirmation that the account is closed and no further charges will be billed. Keep that confirmation permanently. If your final charge was supposed to post on the 15th and another one appears the next month, that needs immediate attention.
If Charges Keep Coming
Start with the gym. Send your cancellation confirmation and ask them to reverse the charge. If they refuse or go silent, you have two stronger moves.
Dispute the charge with your card issuer. Federal law gives you 60 days from the statement date to dispute unauthorized credit card charges. Your certified mail receipt and written cancellation confirmation are exactly what the bank will want. For debit card charges pulled from a checking account, ask your bank to place a stop-payment on future withdrawals from the gym’s billing company.
If the gym keeps billing or threatens collections, file a complaint with your state attorney general’s consumer protection division and with the FTC. Repeated billing after a confirmed cancellation is the kind of pattern those offices investigate. And if a collector does contact you, you have 30 days from first contact to dispute the debt in writing and demand verification. Respond in writing, send copies of your cancellation proof, and keep everything.
