How to Cancel Game Pass on Web, Xbox, or Mobile App

You can cancel Xbox Game Pass in about two minutes from Microsoft’s website, your Xbox console, or the Xbox mobile app. The method depends on where you signed up, but the core choice is the same everywhere: turn off recurring billing and keep playing until your paid period ends, or cancel immediately and lose access right away. Most people want the first option, since you’ve already paid for the time left on the clock.

Turn Off Recurring Billing or Cancel Immediately

These are not the same action, and picking the wrong one catches people off guard. Turning off recurring billing stops the next charge while letting you use Game Pass through the end of your current period. Canceling immediately ends access that moment. Prorated refunds on Xbox subscriptions are not available in most countries, so for the majority of subscribers, turning off auto-renewal is the better move. You keep what you paid for and never need to deal with a refund request.

Before you start, confirm you’re signing in with the exact Microsoft account tied to the subscription. If you have more than one Microsoft account, it’s easy to land in the wrong one and not see Game Pass listed at all.1Microsoft Support. Cancel Your Microsoft Subscription

Cancel Through the Microsoft Website

The browser method works from any device and shows your subscription details most clearly.

  • Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Game Pass.
  • Open the Services & subscriptions page. Your active Game Pass appears there with its next billing date and price.
  • Click Manage next to the Game Pass entry.
  • Select Turn off recurring billing to keep access through the end of the current period, or choose to cancel immediately.
  • Follow the confirmation prompts. Microsoft may offer a retention deal or a tier switch; skip past these if you’ve decided.

If the page shows “Turn on recurring billing” instead of a manage link, auto-renewal is already off. The subscription will expire on the date shown and you won’t be charged again. Nothing more to do.1Microsoft Support. Cancel Your Microsoft Subscription

Microsoft sends a confirmation email, but it’s smart to screenshot the confirmation screen too, in case a billing dispute comes up later.

Cancel From Your Xbox Console

Xbox Series X, Series S, and Xbox One all support cancellation from the dashboard.

  • Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
  • Go to your profile tab and select Settings.
  • Open Account, then Subscriptions. Every active subscription on the account is listed.
  • Select your Game Pass subscription to see the current tier and renewal date.
  • Select Cancel subscription and confirm.

The console will show when your access ends. If you chose to turn off renewal rather than cancel outright, benefits stay active until the current billing period finishes.2Xbox Support. Xbox Subscription Cancellations and Refunds

Cancel From the Xbox Mobile App

Sign in to the Xbox app on your phone, tap your profile icon, open your account settings, and find your subscriptions. Tap Manage next to Game Pass and follow the prompts to turn off recurring billing or cancel. The result is identical to the web version.

If a Third Party Handles Your Billing

If you subscribed through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer, Microsoft cannot cancel for you. The billing relationship is with that company.3Microsoft Support. Manage Your Microsoft 365 Subscription Purchased Through a Third Party Your Microsoft account page usually shows a note identifying which provider is charging you.

  • Apple App Store: Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
  • Google Play: Open the Google Play app, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions and Subscriptions.
  • Other retailers: Sign in to that provider’s website or app and look for subscription management in your account settings.

Refund requests also go through the third party, since Microsoft never received the payment.3Microsoft Support. Manage Your Microsoft 365 Subscription Purchased Through a Third Party

Can You Get a Refund?

Prorated refunds on the most recent charge are available to subscribers in Canada, France, South Korea, Denmark, Israel, and Türkiye. Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal allow prorated refunds on subscription terms longer than one month. For most other countries, prorated refunds on Xbox subscriptions are not available.4Microsoft Support. Microsoft Subscription Refund Policy This is the practical reason to turn off recurring billing instead of canceling immediately: you avoid the refund question entirely.

What Happens to Your Games After Cancellation

When the subscription ends, you lose access to every game you were playing through the Game Pass library. Having it downloaded to your console or PC doesn’t matter. The system checks for a valid license, doesn’t find one, and the game won’t launch.

Games you purchased outright, including any bought at a Game Pass member discount, stay yours. DLC and in-game purchases you paid real money for are trickier: you still own that content, but you can’t use it without the base game. If the base game was only yours through Game Pass, you’ll need to buy it separately or resubscribe before that DLC works again.

Save data and progress stay tied to your Microsoft account either way. Resubscribe later or buy a game you previously played, and your saves will be waiting.

If You Have a Past-Due Balance

When a payment method fails, Microsoft locks the subscription and benefits stop until the balance is cleared.5Xbox Support. Pay a Past-Due Balance to Unlock Your Subscription If you want out rather than paying, update your payment method or contact Microsoft Support directly. Ignoring the balance doesn’t clear it, and it can block you from managing other subscriptions on the same account. The cleanest route is usually to resolve the balance, then immediately turn off recurring billing so next month’s charge never happens.
