To cancel a Google One subscription, go to one.google.com, open Settings, and choose Cancel membership. That works if Google bills you directly. If Apple bills you through the App Store, you cancel in your iPhone’s Settings instead, and if your plan came bundled with a mobile carrier, you cancel through the carrier. The steps themselves take about two minutes. Figuring out which path applies to you is the part worth slowing down for.
Check Who’s Actually Billing You
Look at your bank or credit card statement first. A charge labeled something like “GOOGLE *Google One” means Google bills you directly, and you’ll cancel through the Google One website or Google Play. A charge from “Apple.com/bill” means the subscription runs through the App Store, and you have to cancel in your Apple device settings. Carrier-billed plans show up on your phone bill rather than your card.
You can also check from inside your account. On a computer or phone browser, open one.google.com and look at your current plan details. On Android, open Settings, tap Google, tap your name, tap Manage your Google Account, then go to Payments and Subscriptions to see what’s active.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play
Trying to cancel through the wrong channel is the single most common reason people get stuck. Google’s cancellation screens won’t touch an Apple-billed subscription, and Apple’s Subscriptions list won’t show a plan that Google charges you for directly.
Cancel When Google Bills You Directly
If the charge comes from Google, the website is the fastest route.
- Go to one.google.com and sign in with the Google account tied to the subscription.
- Click the Settings icon, then select Cancel membership.
- Confirm by clicking Cancel membership again.
Google shows a confirmation screen with the date your paid features expire, and sends an email receipt. Your storage and other benefits stay active until the end of the billing period you already paid for.2Google One Help. Change or Cancel Storage Plans – Computer
From an Android phone, the path runs through Google Play:
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Tap Google, then your name, then Manage your Google Account.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Manage subscriptions.
- Select your Google One plan and follow the prompts to cancel.
The system may ask why you’re leaving and offer a downgrade to a cheaper tier. You can skip past those screens. Once you confirm, benefits continue through the current billing cycle.1Google Play Help. Cancel, Pause, or Change a Subscription on Google Play
Cancel When Apple Bills You
If you signed up through an iPhone or iPad app and the charge shows up as Apple.com/bill, Google’s cancellation pages won’t help. You cancel through Apple:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions.
- Find Google One in the list and tap it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription.
If there’s no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red, the subscription is already canceled.3Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription from Apple For a free trial or a discounted introductory offer, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid being billed for a full cycle.4Apple Support. Refunds for Apple-billed subscriptions also go through Apple, not Google. Submit a request at reportaproblem.apple.com, pick “Request a refund,” choose your reason, select the charge, and submit. Allow 24 to 48 hours for a response.5Apple Support. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought from Apple
Cancel When Your Carrier Bills You
Some carriers, including Metro by T-Mobile, bundle Google One with phone plans. Because the carrier controls the billing relationship, you usually have to contact the carrier directly or manage the add-on through your carrier account.
One difference matters: memberships sponsored by Metro by T-Mobile end immediately on cancellation. You lose benefits right away rather than keeping them through the end of a billing cycle.6Google One Help. Cancel Your Google One Membership
What You Keep After Canceling
When Google bills you directly, canceling doesn’t cut your access right away. Your paid storage and features run through the end of the billing period you already paid for. Google One storage purchases are generally non-refundable, so you don’t get money back for unused time.7Google One Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies
Regional rules change this in some places. Customers in the EU and UK who purchased through Google Play can cancel within 14 days for a full refund. Customers in Israel may be able to cancel with immediate effect and receive a prorated partial refund based on remaining days in the subscription.7Google One Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies
If a renewal fails because of a payment problem rather than a cancellation, Google adds a seven-day grace period before downgrading your account, which gives you time to update your payment method.7Google One Help. Purchase, Cancellation and Refund Policies
What Happens to Your Files When the Plan Ends
Once your paid plan expires, your account drops back to Google’s free storage tier. New accounts now receive 5 GB by default, with the option to unlock 15 GB at no cost by verifying a phone number. If you opened your account before that change, check your storage dashboard to confirm your actual free limit.
If your stored data exceeds the free space available to you, Google puts the account into an over-quota state. The effects hit all three core services at once:
- Google Drive: you can’t upload new files.
- Google Photos: you can’t back up new photos or videos.
- Gmail: your ability to send and receive email is affected, and senders may get bounce-back errors.
Google does not immediately delete your files when you go over quota.8Google One Help. How Your Google Storage Works If a user fully removes the Google One service from their account, existing data in Photos, Drive, and Gmail is kept for at least two years.6Google One Help. Cancel Your Google One Membership Still, an over-quota account is effectively frozen. Treat the grace period as a countdown, not a safety net, and clear space or export what you need before you reach the limit.
One boundary worth flagging: if you’re a business customer trying to cancel Google Workspace rather than a personal Google One plan, the process is different. Workspace cancellations run through the Admin console, require the Billing Management administrator privilege, and can trigger a closeout charge for the remaining balance on annual contracts.
