How to Cancel HBO Max on Any Device or Provider

To cancel HBO Max — now branded simply as Max — you have to go to whichever company actually charges your card, not just the Max app. If Warner Bros. Discovery bills you directly, cancel at max.com. If you signed up through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, Hulu, YouTube TV, or a cable or satellite provider, that company controls your subscription and you have to cancel there. Canceling in the wrong place is the single most common reason charges keep showing up.

Find Out Who Bills You

Check your bank or credit card statement first. If the merchant name reads “Max” or “Warner Bros. Discovery,” you’re billed directly and can cancel on the Max website. If it reads “Apple,” “Google,” “Amazon,” “Roku,” or a cable company name, that company handles your subscription.

If the statement isn’t clear, sign in at max.com, click your profile icon, and select “Subscription.” The top of that page tells you who handles billing, along with your current plan and next billing date.1HBO Max. HBO Max Plans and Prices

Cancel Directly on Max

If Warner Bros. Discovery bills you, cancel on the Max website:

  • Sign in at max.com with the email and password you used to create the account.
  • Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and select “Subscription” from the dropdown.
  • Click “Cancel Your Subscription.” Max will offer you a cheaper plan or a pause — skip past these if you want to fully cancel.
  • Review the screen showing when access ends, then click “Confirm Cancellation.”

Watch for the confirmation screen and the follow-up email. If you close the browser before that final confirmation step, the cancellation may not go through, and you’ll be charged again on the next billing date.2HBO Max. How Do I Cancel HBO Max

Cancel Through a Third-Party Provider

When a third party handles billing, no “Cancel Subscription” option appears inside the Max app or website. You have to cancel wherever you originally signed up.

Apple (iPhone or iPad)

Open Settings, tap your name at the top, then tap “Subscriptions.” Find Max in the list, tap it, and tap “Cancel Subscription.” You may need to scroll to see the button. If there’s no cancel button and you see an expiration message in red, the subscription is already canceled.3Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple

Google Play (Android)

Open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, go to “Payments & subscriptions,” and select “Subscriptions.” Tap Max and follow the prompts. You can also manage subscriptions at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions from any browser.4Google Play Help. Cancel a Google Play Subscription

Amazon Prime Video

If you added Max as a Prime Video channel, open “Account & Settings” on the Prime Video site, select “Your subscriptions,” find the Max add-on, and click “Unsubscribe.” The confirmation screen shows when access ends.5Amazon Prime Video. Cancel Your Prime Video Add-On Subscription

Roku

Go to my.roku.com/subscriptions in a browser and sign in. Under “Active subscriptions,” select Max, click “Manage subscription,” and follow the steps. From a Roku device, you can also highlight the Max channel, press the asterisk (*) button on the remote, and select “Manage subscription.”6Roku Support. Manage or Cancel Subscriptions on Roku

Hulu

Sign in at hulu.com/account. In the “Your Subscription” section, select “Manage Add-ons.” Find HBO Max in the list and toggle the checkmark to an X. That removes Max without canceling your base Hulu plan.2HBO Max. How Do I Cancel HBO Max

YouTube TV

YouTube TV lets you remove Max as an add-on without canceling your whole membership. Go to your YouTube TV settings, find the add-on management area, and remove Max. If you cancel your full YouTube TV membership instead, all add-ons end with your current payment period.7YouTube TV Help. Cancel or Pause Your YouTube TV Membership

Cable or Satellite Provider

If Max is bundled with a cable or satellite package from a provider like Xfinity, Spectrum, or DirecTV, cancel through that provider. The cancel option won’t appear in the Max app. Log in to your provider’s online account and look for a section like “Manage Programming” or “Manage Add-ons.” If you can’t find it online, call customer service. Keep a record of the call: date, representative’s name, and any confirmation number.

Cancel Before Your Next Billing Date

Max doesn’t specify a required number of days in advance. Its guidance is simply to cancel before your next billing date.2HBO Max. How Do I Cancel HBO Max A day or two of cushion helps. Canceling at 11 p.m. the night before renewal is cutting it close, since processing delays or time-zone differences can push you past the cutoff. Your next billing date appears in the Subscription section of your Max account, or in whichever third-party platform handles billing.

What Happens After You Cancel

You don’t lose access the moment you cancel. Your subscription stays active through the end of the billing period you’ve already paid for. Pay on March 1st and cancel on March 10th, and you can keep watching through the rest of that cycle. Max generally does not issue prorated refunds for the unused portion.5Amazon Prime Video. Cancel Your Prime Video Add-On Subscription One exception: if you had the Extra Member Add-On, Max refunds the remaining days on that add-on when your base plan expires.2HBO Max. Your account itself isn’t deleted. Max keeps your profile, watchlist, and viewing history for if you ever resubscribe. Your login still works; you just can’t stream once the paid period ends.

If Charges Keep Coming

Billing after you thought you canceled almost always traces back to one of two things: the cancellation didn’t fully process, or you canceled through the wrong platform. If Apple or Google bills you, canceling inside the Max app does nothing.

Start by checking your subscription status on the platform that actually charges you. If it still shows active, cancel again through the correct steps and save a screenshot of the confirmation. If it shows canceled but charges continue, contact that provider’s support directly and have your confirmation email or screenshot ready.

As a last resort, dispute the charge with your credit card company. Card issuers typically expect you to show you tried to resolve it with the merchant first, so keep records of any support chats or emails. Forgetting to cancel isn’t usually enough to win a chargeback; the evidence that matters is proof you canceled and were billed anyway.
