How to Cancel Hotspot on Verizon: Plan, Line or Prepaid

How you cancel a hotspot on Verizon depends on what kind of hotspot you have. If it’s a perk added to your smartphone plan, you can remove it yourself in the My Verizon app in a couple of minutes. If it’s a standalone device like a Jetpack or MiFi with its own line, you have to call or chat with Verizon to disconnect the line. Prepaid hotspots can be canceled by phone or by simply letting the 30-day period run out.

First, Check Which Type of Hotspot You Have

Open your bill or the My Verizon app and look at how the hotspot appears.

A hotspot perk is an add-on to an existing smartphone line. Verizon’s current version adds 100 GB of hotspot data for $10 per month on Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Welcome plans, and the charge shows up as a line item on your phone bill.1Verizon Support. 100 GB Mobile Hotspot Perk With Unlimited Mobile Plans FAQs

A standalone hotspot device has its own line with its own data plan, listed separately on your account. Verizon’s dedicated hotspot plans start at $30 per month.2Verizon. Unlimited Plus 5G and Unlimited Plan for Hotspots

A prepaid hotspot is paid in 30-day blocks in advance rather than billed monthly. If you signed up through Verizon Prepaid or bought service without a credit check, that’s what you have.

Removing a Hotspot Perk From Your Phone Plan

Because the perk is only an add-on, you can drop it yourself. In the My Verizon app, open the Me tab and tap Manage products & plan perks. Find the hotspot perk, tap it, then tap Unsubscribe or Remove on the line it’s attached to, and confirm.3Verizon. Screenshot the confirmation. If the charge shows up again on a later bill, that screenshot turns a billing dispute into a quick call.

Canceling a Standalone Hotspot Device Line

Verizon does not let you close a full line through self-service. You’ll need to reach a representative.

Call 800-922-0204, or sign into My Verizon and use the chat feature; typing “Cancel” in chat routes you into the disconnection flow or to a live agent.4Verizon. How to Disconnect a Mobile Line or Close Your Mobile Phone Account FAQs Before you start, have the account owner’s name, the hotspot’s ten-digit phone number, and your four-digit Account PIN. Verizon uses the Account PIN as the primary way to verify the account owner, and you can reset it in the My Verizon app under profile security if you’ve forgotten it.5Verizon. Verizon Mobile Account PIN FAQs The 15-digit device IMEI, printed on the back of the hotspot or on your bill, helps the representative confirm which device to disconnect.

Expect a retention offer. Verizon reps often pitch discounted plans or credits to keep you. If you’ve made your decision, decline and ask them to proceed.

Before you hang up, ask for a confirmation number and the exact disconnection date, and write both down. That’s your proof if charges continue after the line was supposed to close.

Canceling a Prepaid Hotspot

Prepaid is the simplest. There’s no contract and no early termination penalty. Call Verizon Prepaid at 888-294-6804 to stop service, or just don’t add funds when your current 30-day period ends; once the balance is used up and the period lapses, the line deactivates on its own.

Any remaining prepaid balance is forfeited when you cancel or let service expire. Verizon does not refund unused prepaid funds, so time your cancellation for the end of the 30-day window if you want the full value of what you paid.

What Happens If You’re Still Paying Off the Device

Disconnecting a line while you still owe on a device installment plan triggers the remaining balance. The full amount left on the device becomes due on your next bill.6Verizon. Device Payment Agreement FAQs Verizon’s Device Payment Agreement treats failing to maintain service as a default and gives Verizon the right to require immediate payment of the entire remaining balance.7Verizon. Device Payment Agreement

Check your remaining device balance in the My Verizon app under device payment details before you cancel. If it’s small, paying it off first keeps the final bill from surprising you.

Returning the Device and the Restocking Fee

If you cancel within 30 days of buying the hotspot, Verizon’s return policy lets you send the hardware back, though a $50 restocking fee applies to any wireless device return or exchange.8Verizon. Verizon Return Policy – 30-Day Returns and Exchanges Returning the device does not cancel service on its own. You still have to contact customer service separately to disconnect the line.

Past the 30-day window, if you own the device outright or have paid off the installment plan, the hardware is yours to keep. If you got the device through a promotion with equipment credits tied to keeping service, canceling early may stop those credits and raise what you owe. Check for active promotional credits before you cancel.

Your Final Bill

Verizon generates the final bill on your normal billing cycle date. Prorated credits appear for any service charges billed in advance beyond your disconnection date, and in some cases you may receive more than one bill after disconnection as new charges or credits are processed.9Verizon. Paying Your Final Bill The final bill can include the remaining device payment balance, prorated service charges, and any applicable fees. If a credit balance remains after everything is settled and you owe nothing else on any Verizon account, Verizon refunds the overpayment. Keep your account login active until you’ve confirmed the final bill and any refund.

Porting Your Number to a New Carrier Instead

If you’re switching carriers rather than dropping hotspot service entirely, port the number out; do not cancel first. Disconnecting the line before the port completes means you lose the number.

You’ll need a Number Transfer PIN. Generate one by signing into My Verizon as the account owner or account manager and going to the Number Transfer PIN section, or by dialing #PORT from the phone on the number. The PIN is valid for only seven days, so don’t generate it until your new carrier is ready.10Verizon. Move Your Mobile Number to Another Carrier FAQs

Check whether Number Lock is enabled on the line. It blocks unauthorized transfers, but it will also block yours; turn it off in the My Verizon app before starting the port.11Verizon. My Verizon App – Enable / Disable SIM Protection and Number Lock Give the new carrier the Number Transfer PIN and your Verizon account number, and once the port completes, your Verizon line disconnects automatically. If you have other connected device lines on the account, those don’t cancel on their own; disconnect them separately to stop the charges.10Verizon. Move Your Mobile Number to Another Carrier FAQs

Cancellation Rights for Active-Duty Servicemembers

If you’re on active duty and receive qualifying military orders, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act lets you cancel a Verizon hotspot contract without early termination charges. The protection covers commercial mobile service contracts entered into before you received relocation orders, and the orders must direct relocation for at least 90 days to a location that doesn’t support the contract’s service.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 50 – 3956 Termination of Certain Consumer Contracts

To terminate, send Verizon written or electronic notice along with a copy of the orders and the date you want service to end. Verizon cannot charge early termination fees, but any unpaid balance owed before the termination date remains yours to pay. Verizon must refund advance payments for service periods after the effective termination date within 60 days. If the change of station lasts less than three years, you can keep your phone number by re-subscribing within 90 days of returning.

Watch for Charges After Cancellation

Check your bank or credit card statements for the two billing cycles after cancellation. If a charge appears after the confirmed cancellation date, contact Verizon with the confirmation number and the disconnection date you were given.

If Verizon won’t fix it, the Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute the charge in writing to the creditor’s billing address within 60 days of the date the first bill containing the error was mailed. While the dispute is open, the creditor cannot report the disputed amount as delinquent.13Federal Trade Commission. Fair Credit Billing Act
