How to Cancel IDT Energy: Fees, Methods, and Auto-Renewal

To cancel IDT Energy, call customer service at 877-887-6866 or submit a cancellation request through the contact form at idtenergy.com/contact with your account number. The switch takes one to two billing cycles to show up on your bill, and your local utility handles the transition without any interruption to your electricity or gas service. Whether you owe an early termination fee depends on your plan type and how long ago you enrolled.

What to Have Ready Before You Call

Pull your IDT Energy account number off your welcome letter or the supply section of your utility bill. Also grab your original disclosure statement or terms of service, because the plan name printed on it decides whether you owe a fee. Fixed-rate plans are branded “SmartBudget” and variable-rate plans “SmartFlex.”1IDT Energy. FAQ

Will You Owe an Early Termination Fee

Variable-rate SmartFlex plans carry no termination fee. The contract itself says so.4IDT Energy. Fixed-rate SmartBudget plans are different. IDT’s disclosure documents show an early termination fee of $10 for each month remaining in your initial contract term.3IDT Energy. Pennsylvania Natural Gas Disclosure Statement Cancel a 12-month contract after four months and you’d owe about $80. The exact structure varies by state and contract version, so check your own disclosure statement. Some fixed contracts waive the fee entirely; the contract summary will say so if yours does.

Watch Out for Auto-Renewal

Fixed-rate IDT Energy contracts don’t simply expire. They auto-renew. Before your initial term ends, IDT sends a written renewal notice with the new rate and term length, and if you do nothing the contract rolls over at whatever rate that notice specifies.7IDT Energy. IDT Energy Uniform Disclosure Statement – Illinois Electric Fixed The new rate can be substantially higher.

This is where customers get caught. The renewal notice gets lost in the mail, the contract rolls, and now a fresh early termination fee attaches to a term the customer never consciously agreed to. If you plan to cancel eventually, set a calendar reminder for 60 to 90 days before your contract end date.

What Happens on Your Bill After You Cancel

The switch doesn’t happen the moment you hang up. Your local utility manages the transition on its own schedule, usually tied to your next meter reading. In practice, you’ll continue receiving IDT Energy supply for one to two billing cycles after your cancellation request. Your utility keeps delivering energy throughout, so your service never pauses.

Once the switch date hits, your utility resumes as your supplier automatically. The IDT supply line on your bill disappears, replaced by your utility’s standard supply rate. Any early termination fee will typically show up on your final IDT charges, which come through your utility’s consolidated bill.

Check your first two utility statements after cancellation. Confirm that IDT’s supply charges have stopped and that your utility is now listed as the supplier. If IDT charges continue past two full billing cycles, call your utility, not IDT, and ask them to confirm the date your account reverted to default service.

If You Were Switched Without Your Consent

Some people find IDT Energy charges on their bill without ever having agreed to the switch. This is called slamming, and it is illegal in every state. The steps here are different from a routine cancellation.

Call your local utility first and ask for an immediate reversal of the unauthorized switch. Get the switch date in writing. Then file a complaint with your state’s Public Utilities Commission, which investigates slamming reports and can take enforcement action against the supplier. Gather your utility bills, any welcome letters from IDT Energy, and your call logs or emails as evidence. You should not owe an early termination fee on a contract you never authorized.
