How to Cancel LegalZoom: Steps, Refunds, and Registered Agent

To cancel LegalZoom, sign in to your account, open the Account tab, go to Manage Payments, select the subscription, and click Cancel — or call (888) 310-0151 Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific. Two things decide whether that’s the whole job: whether you’re inside the 30-day refund window, and whether the subscription is for registered agent service, which requires a replacement agent on file with your state first.

Cancel Through Your Account

The online route takes a few minutes:

  • Sign in at LegalZoom.com and open the Account tab.
  • Go to Manage Payments, where your active subscriptions are listed.
  • Click the subscription you want to end.
  • Click Cancel and confirm when prompted.

Reach the final confirmation screen. If you close the browser partway through, the subscription stays active and will renew on schedule.1LegalZoom. Contact Us

What Happens After You Cancel

Cancellation isn’t immediate. You keep access through the end of the billing period you already paid for, and no further charges apply after that.2LegalZoom. Supplemental Terms of Service for Subscriptions and Third-Party Services There is no prorated refund for unused time.

Every LegalZoom subscription — monthly, six-month, or annual — renews automatically until you cancel. LegalZoom may send a reminder email before renewal but is not required to, and a missed reminder does not excuse the charge. The renewal matters most on annual plans. If your annual plan is paid upfront, the full year hits your card in one lump sum at renewal. If it’s paid monthly, all twelve payments become due once renewal passes. Cancel before the renewal date to avoid being locked into another cycle.2LegalZoom. Supplemental Terms of Service for Subscriptions and Third-Party Services

If you’re on a promotional trial, your card is charged automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel first. You can cancel a trial through My Account or by calling (888) 310-0151.2LegalZoom. When You Can Get a Refund

LegalZoom does not charge a cancellation fee. Whether you get money back depends on timing and what you’ve already used.

For subscriptions, refunds are available within 30 days of your initial purchase by calling or chatting with support. After 30 days, no refund is available, and there is no proration for unused time on an annual plan.3LegalZoom. LZ Guarantee

Even inside the 30-day window, certain actions disqualify you:

  • Legal plans: no refund once you’ve completed an attorney consultation.
  • LZ Tax: no refund if you’ve completed a consultation with an LZ Tax expert or had a return filed.
  • Legal forms: no refund once you’ve downloaded a form.
  • Estate plan revisions: no refund once a revision has been completed.
  • Business license subscriptions: no refund once the customized summary of required licenses is generated.3LegalZoom. LZ Guarantee

One-time orders follow a different rule. LLC formations, trademark filings, and similar products are refundable within 60 days of purchase only if the order has not yet been submitted to the government agency. Once LegalZoom files your paperwork, the order is non-refundable. For non-filed products such as operating agreements, the window is 60 days if the document isn’t finished, or 7 days after the completed document is available for download.3LegalZoom. LZ Guarantee

Canceling Registered Agent Service

This is the one cancellation you cannot handle with a click. Every state requires your business to have a registered agent on file at all times, so LegalZoom will not release you from the service until you’ve appointed a replacement and filed the change with your state.

The steps:

  • Appoint a new registered agent. This can be another commercial service, an individual in the state where your business is registered, or yourself if you meet the state’s requirements.
  • File the change with your state. Most states use a form along the lines of “Statement of Change of Registered Agent.” Filing fees generally fall in the $25 to $75 range.
  • Get proof. A copy of the filed document, a copy of an annual report listing the new agent, or a screenshot from the state’s business search page showing the updated agent all work.
  • Upload the proof and cancel. Sign in, go to Account, then Manage Payments, open your Registered Agent Services subscription, and click Cancel.

LegalZoom will not process the cancellation without that proof.1LegalZoom. Contact Us

If you simply stop paying without naming a replacement, LegalZoom can resign as your agent. That resignation typically becomes effective within 30 to 60 days depending on the state, and once it does, your business has no agent on record. States treat the gap as a compliance failure that can lead to administrative dissolution, which can mean losing rights to your company name, frozen bank accounts, and personal liability exposure for owners on business debts incurred after dissolution. Give yourself an extra week or two for the state filing before you cancel, and don’t let the subscription lapse before the state confirms the new agent.

Your Documents After Cancellation

Canceling does not delete documents you created while active. Electronically signed documents stay accessible in your account under the Documents section after the subscription ends.4LegalZoom. Canceling Forms and eSign Plan Even so, download copies of anything important before you cancel. Formation documents, operating agreements, and filed paperwork belong in your own records rather than on a vendor’s platform you no longer pay for.

Canceling the Subscription Does Not Close Your Business

Ending a LegalZoom subscription cancels the service, not your LLC or corporation. The entity still exists with the state, and so do its obligations: annual reports, state fees, and a registered agent on record. If LegalZoom was handling your compliance filings, those deadlines are now yours to track. Filing schedules vary — some states require annual reports, others biennial, with different due dates — so check your Secretary of State’s website to confirm your entity’s status and upcoming deadlines. Missing a filing puts the business into “not in good standing,” and continued noncompliance leads to administrative dissolution.

If you actually want to shut the business down, that’s a separate process: formal dissolution with the state, final tax filings, and settling outstanding obligations. Canceling LegalZoom does none of it.
