The Four Ways To Cancel

MPower’s own agreement recognizes four cancellation methods, and any one of them is enough on its own.

  • Phone. Call 877-286-7693 (toll-free) or 718-233-1167. Ask for a confirmation number, and jot down the representative’s name along with the date and time. That confirmation number is your proof the request was submitted.
  • Email. Send your request to CustomerService@MPowerEnergy.com with your full name, service address, and MPower account number. Ask for a written reply confirming receipt.
  • Mail. Write to MPower Energy, 24 Hillel Place, Brooklyn, New York 11210. Certified mail with return receipt is worth the few extra dollars if you expect any billing dispute later.
  • Local utility. Call the utility that actually delivers your electricity or gas and tell them to drop your third-party supplier. The utility processes the switch back to its default rate and notifies MPower for you.

MPower’s terms add one practical caution: for protection against unauthorized enrollment, contact MPower directly to cancel before signing up with a different supplier.1Mpower Energy. Terms and Conditions of Agreement

What To Have In Front Of You

Pull up a recent MPower bill before you call or write. You’ll need the account holder’s name and service address exactly as they appear on the invoice, your MPower account number, and your local utility account number. The utility number sometimes shows up under a label like “POD ID” or “Choice ID,” depending on your utility territory. Having both numbers ready avoids a callback.

It also helps to know whether you’re still in your fixed-rate term or have already rolled into a month-to-month or variable rate. Your original disclosure statement or the most recent renewal notice shows the contract dates. This matters less for fees, because MPower doesn’t charge any, and more for understanding what you’re paying right now.

There Is No Early Termination Fee

MPower’s terms state plainly that “you will not be charged a fee for termination,” though you still owe any past-due balance on the account.1Mpower Energy. Terms and Conditions of Agreement The DC contract uses nearly identical language, confirming you “may cancel this Agreement at any time without penalty.”2Mpower Energy. Contract DC So the only financial obligation when you cancel is paying for the energy you’ve already used.

The Three-Day Rescission Window

If you just signed up and changed your mind, residential customers can rescind the agreement within three business days of receiving it, by calling, writing, emailing, or contacting the local utility.1Mpower Energy. Terms and Conditions of Agreement Because MPower charges no termination fee anyway, the practical difference between canceling on day two and day thirty is small. The main benefit of acting inside three days is that the enrollment may never fully process with your utility.

A separate right applies if you signed up at your door. The federal Cooling-Off Rule gives you three business days to cancel any in-person sale over $25 made away from the seller’s regular place of business, and the salesperson is required to hand you a cancellation form at the time of sale.3eCFR. 16 CFR Part 429 – Rule Concerning Cooling-Off Period for Sales Made at Homes or at Certain Other Locations The Cooling-Off Rule does not cover sales made entirely by phone or online.4Federal Trade Commission. Buyer’s Remorse: The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule May Help If you enrolled by phone, MPower’s own three-day rescission policy is what protects you.

Notice Period And Timing

MPower’s general terms require written notice of cancellation and state that the agreement continues until the local utility finishes processing the switch under its own rules.1Mpower Energy. Terms and Conditions of Agreement The New York version adds a specific requirement of at least fifteen calendar days’ notice before cancellation takes effect.5MPower Energy. Terms and Conditions of Agreement – New York MPower operates in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, so the exact language may differ depending on which state governs your account.

Whichever version applies, putting your cancellation in writing creates documentation if the timeline is ever disputed. If you cancel by phone, get that confirmation number.

Cancel Before Auto-Renewal Kicks In

MPower’s agreement says that unless terminated earlier, the contract continues after the initial fixed period at either a fixed or variable rate as described in the pricing section.1Mpower Energy. Terms and Conditions of Agreement In practice, if you do nothing when your fixed-rate term ends, you keep getting MPower’s supply, possibly at a different rate. Many customers only notice after a higher bill arrives.

Set a calendar reminder about 60 days before your contract end date. That gives you time to compare your current rate against your local utility’s default rate and other supplier offers. Sixty days is also enough lead time to satisfy even the strictest notice requirement and have the switch processed before the contract rolls over.

What Happens After You Cancel

Canceling MPower does not turn off your power or gas. Your local utility keeps delivering energy through its own infrastructure the whole time. The only thing that changes is which company is listed as your supplier on the bill. Once the cancellation goes through, your account reverts to the utility’s default rate (sometimes called “basic service” or “price to compare”), or you can choose a different third-party supplier.

The actual switch usually aligns with your next scheduled meter reading, so it can take one to two billing cycles to complete. During that gap, you may still see MPower charges for energy used before the switch date. That final invoice covers your remaining usage and any outstanding balance, and it typically arrives a few weeks after the transition. Once it’s paid, your MPower account is closed.

If you’re on budget billing with your utility, where monthly payments are averaged over the year, check with the utility about any remaining balance or credit. Budget billing adjustments are settled separately from the supplier switch and can show up as either a charge or a refund on your next utility statement.

If MPower Won’t Process Your Cancellation

Most cancellations go smoothly. If MPower stalls, ignores your request, or keeps billing you after you’ve canceled, escalate to your state’s public utility commission. Every state where MPower operates has a regulator overseeing retail energy suppliers.

  • Document everything. Save your cancellation confirmation number, copies of emails, certified mail receipts, and any bills that arrived after your cancellation date. Write down dates, representative names, and what was said on each call.
  • File an informal complaint. Most state commissions have an informal process where staff contacts the supplier on your behalf. It’s free and typically resolves within 30 to 60 days.
  • Escalate to a formal complaint if needed. If the informal route fails, you can file a formal complaint, which involves written pleadings and potentially a hearing. This is rarely necessary for a straightforward cancellation dispute.

If you were enrolled with MPower without your consent (a practice known as “slamming”), call your local utility right away to reverse the supplier switch, then file a complaint with your state commission. Unauthorized switches are taken seriously by regulators, and you may be entitled to a refund of the difference between what MPower charged and what the utility’s default rate would have been.
