How to Cancel Ownwell: Dashboard, Email, and Agent Revocation

To cancel Ownwell, sign in to your account at ownwell.com, open “All Properties,” click the three-dot menu next to the property, and choose to deactivate Auto-Appeal or cancel the current appeal. Knowing how to cancel Ownwell cleanly takes one more step most people miss: separately revoking the company’s authority to act as your agent with your local appraisal district. Timing matters too, because Ownwell re-enrolls your property every tax year and charges a percentage of any reduction it secures before you cancel.1Ownwell. Deactivate Auto-Appeal or Cancel the Current Appeal

Ownwell gives you two separate controls, and they do different things.1Ownwell. How Can I Pause or Cancel My Service with Ownwell?

Deactivating Auto-Appeal stops Ownwell from monitoring your property and filing future appeals. Any appeal already in progress keeps running. You can turn Auto-Appeal back on later, so this is the right lever if you just want to sit out a year.

Canceling the current appeal withdraws an appeal that has already been filed for this tax year. You can only do this if there are still at least two months before your county’s protest deadline. After that cutoff, the appeal runs to completion and any savings generate a fee.

If you want out entirely, do both: cancel any active appeal while you still can, and deactivate Auto-Appeal so nothing new gets filed next year.

Canceling Through the Dashboard

The portal is the fastest route.1Ownwell. How Can I Pause or Cancel My Service with Ownwell?

  • Sign in at ownwell.com/sign-in with the email on your account.
  • Click “All Properties” in the top navigation. Each enrolled property appears separately.
  • Click the three-dot menu next to the property, then choose to deactivate Auto-Appeal or cancel the current appeal.

If you have more than one property enrolled, repeat the steps for each. Canceling on one property does not touch the others.

Canceling by Email

If the dashboard is giving you trouble, or you want a written record, email support@ownwell.com.1Ownwell. How Can I Pause or Cancel My Service with Ownwell? Include your full name, the property address, and a clear statement that you want to cancel service and deactivate Auto-Appeal. Ask for written confirmation that it has been processed, and save the reply. If a bill shows up later, that email is your evidence that you ended the relationship before the next appeal cycle.

When to Cancel to Avoid Next Year’s Fee

Ownwell automatically files a new appeal each year and notifies you at the start of tax season before it files on your behalf.1Ownwell. How Can I Pause or Cancel My Service with Ownwell? To avoid fees for the upcoming year, deactivate Auto-Appeal before that notification arrives. Protest deadlines in most jurisdictions fall in the spring, so the winter months are the safest window to cancel.

If you have already been notified that Ownwell is filing for the year and you want to stop it, you can still cancel the current appeal, but only if the county deadline is more than two months away. Once you are inside that two-month window, the appeal proceeds and any resulting savings will trigger a fee.

Fees You May Still Owe

Canceling does not wipe out charges for work Ownwell has already completed. If the company secured a property tax reduction for the current year before you canceled, you still owe the fee for that reduction.1Ownwell. How Can I Pause or Cancel My Service with Ownwell? Ownwell’s fee is a percentage of your actual tax savings, and the percentage varies by region.2Ownwell. Pricing Information The obligation attaches to the reduction itself, not to whether your account is still open when the invoice arrives.

Revoke Ownwell’s Agent Authorization

Canceling in the Ownwell portal ends your relationship with Ownwell. It does not automatically end Ownwell’s authority to act as your agent before your local appraisal district. When you signed up, you likely authorized Ownwell as your tax agent, and that authorization can stay on file after your account closes. Until you revoke it, the appraisal district may continue treating Ownwell as your representative and sending notices to the company instead of you.

In Texas, property owners revoke the designation by filing Form 50-813, Revocation of Appointment of Agent for Property Tax Matters, with the appraisal district.3Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Revocation of Appointment of Agent for Property Tax Matters The revocation takes effect when the appraisal district receives it. You must provide at least one property identifier: the account number, the physical address, or the legal description. If Ownwell was authorized on more than one property and your revocation only lists some of them, the company’s authority remains active on anything you did not list.

Other states have their own revocation forms and procedures. Call your local appraisal district or assessor’s office to find out what they require. Save a copy of whatever you file.

If You Get Billed After Canceling

The most common complaint from former Ownwell customers is an unexpected invoice. Usually one of two things happened: Auto-Appeal was deactivated but the current appeal was not canceled, or the cancellation came too late in the cycle and a reduction had already been secured. In both cases, Ownwell’s position is that the work was done before cancellation and the fee is owed.

If you believe you were enrolled without proper consent, dispute the charge in writing at support@ownwell.com and keep every message. If Ownwell does not resolve it, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or your state’s consumer protection office. Screenshot the confirmation screen when you cancel, note the date, and hold onto any revocation form you filed with the appraisal district. Those records are what you will need if the billing question becomes a dispute.
