How to Cancel Planet Fitness Black Card: Methods, Timing, and Fees

To cancel a Planet Fitness Black Card membership, you have three options: go into your home club in person, send a cancellation letter by certified mail, or, at some locations, submit the request through your online account.1Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ The process itself is simple. The timing is what trips people up. Cancel too close to your monthly billing date or your annual fee date and you’ll pay for a cycle you never planned to use.

The Three Cancellation Methods

Planet Fitness is a franchise operation, so not every club handles all three methods the same way. Online cancellation in particular varies by location. If you want certainty that the request went through, in-person or certified mail are the safest bets.

In Person at Your Home Club

Walk into the specific location where you signed up and ask the front desk to process the cancellation. You’ll verify your identity and fill out a cancellation form. This is the fastest method, and it’s the only one where you walk out with a confirmation receipt in hand. Get that receipt and hold onto it. If a billing dispute comes up later, it’s your proof that you canceled when you say you did.

By Certified Mail

Write a letter with your full name, membership ID number, mailing address, and a clear statement that you’re canceling your Black Card membership. Send it to your home club’s address by certified mail with return receipt requested. The tracking number and delivery signature together create a paper trail showing exactly when the club received your notice.

Online

Planet Fitness Customer Service and FAQ If your club supports it, sign in at planetfitness.com and follow the prompts. If you don’t see a cancellation option after logging in, your location doesn’t offer it and you’ll need to go in person or mail a letter.

Timing It to Avoid Another Month

Planet Fitness bills monthly dues on the 17th of each month.2Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness New Albany To avoid being charged for another month, submit your cancellation at least seven days before the next billing date, which means having it processed by roughly the 10th. Don’t cut it close with a mailed letter, since delivery time counts against you.

The same seven-day rule applies to the annual fee. Planet Fitness charges a $49 annual fee on top of monthly dues, and the date it hits depends on when you signed up. If your cancellation isn’t processed at least a week before that date, you’ll likely be charged for it, and the annual fee is generally non-refundable once processed. Check your original membership agreement or ask your home club to confirm the exact annual fee date.

Commitment Term or Month-to-Month

Some Black Card memberships come with a 12-month commitment. Others are sold as no-commitment month-to-month plans.3Planet Fitness. Gym Memberships – Starting at $15 Which one you have depends on the promotion running when you signed up and what your franchise offered. Check your membership agreement.

If you’re on a commitment term and cancel before the 12 months are up, expect a buyout fee of around $58. Once you’ve completed the commitment, the membership rolls over to month-to-month and the buyout fee no longer applies. At that point all you owe is your regular dues through the end of the notice period.

The Black Card currently costs $24.99 per month at most locations.2Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness New Albany If you’re only two or three months from finishing your commitment, do the math. Riding it out can cost less than the $58 buyout, and you keep gym access in the meantime.

Freezing Instead of Canceling

If the reason you’re canceling is temporary, like travel, a busy stretch at work, or a short-term injury, a freeze may fit better. Most locations allow freezes of one to three months, with some clubs going up to six months with manager approval. The freeze fee is typically $5 to $10 per month, and some corporate-owned clubs waive it.

One catch: the annual fee can still hit during a freeze. Pausing your monthly dues doesn’t pause the annual fee calendar. If your annual fee date falls inside the freeze window, you’ll still be charged the $49.

Medical Cancellation During a Commitment

If a medical condition prevents you from using the gym, you may be able to cancel without the buyout fee even during a commitment period. Locations that offer this waiver typically require a doctor’s note on official letterhead. The specifics of what qualifies and how the waiver works depend on the franchise, so call your home club before going to the trouble of getting documentation.

Clearing an Outstanding Balance First

If your account has past-due charges, most locations require you to clear the balance before they’ll process a cancellation. Trying to sidestep unpaid fees by blocking charges through your bank consistently backfires. The club keeps trying to collect, late fees pile up, and the balance can eventually be sent to collections, which can affect your credit. If you owe money and want out, talk to the club manager directly.

Confirming the Cancellation Went Through

Don’t assume the cancellation was processed just because you submitted it. If you canceled in person, you should have a receipt. If you mailed a letter, keep the certified mail tracking number and the return receipt card. Watch your bank statements for at least 60 days after the cancellation date. A charge that slips through in that window is much easier to reverse when you have documentation showing the cancellation was already on file.

If an unexpected charge shows up, contact your home club first with your proof. Most billing disputes at the club level resolve quickly when you can show a receipt or tracking confirmation. If the club isn’t responsive, the third-party billing company for many Planet Fitness locations is ABC Fitness, reachable at 888-827-9262 or customercare@abcfitness.com.4ABC Fitness. Contact – Gym Member Support They can pull up your account and help resolve charges the home club won’t address.

If You Just Signed Up

If you signed up recently and already regret it, check whether your state has a cooling-off period for gym contracts. Most states with gym-specific consumer protection laws allow three to five business days to cancel without penalty after signing, and some extend the window to as long as 15 business days. During that window, you can typically cancel for any reason and owe nothing beyond what you’ve already paid. These rights exist regardless of what your Planet Fitness contract says, because state consumer protection laws override contract terms. Your state attorney general’s office or consumer protection division can tell you what applies where you live.
