To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, you have two options: go in person to the club where you signed up, or send a cancellation letter by USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. The app, website, phone, and email are not accepted. The deadline that matters most is the 10th of the month. If your home club receives your cancellation by then, you won’t be billed for the following month. If it arrives on the 11th or later, you owe one more monthly draft with no refund.1Planet Fitness. Canceling in Person
Go to the Planet Fitness location where you originally joined, during staffed hours, and bring a valid photo ID. No other Planet Fitness can process your cancellation, even if you’ve been using a different club across town. Front-desk staffing can be thin in the early morning and late at night, so call ahead to confirm someone with cancellation authority will be there.
Tell the staff you want to cancel. They’ll pull up your account, verify your ID, and have you sign a cancellation form. Before you leave, ask for a printed or emailed confirmation. That document is your proof, and you’ll need it if a charge shows up after the fact.
Staff may ask why you’re leaving and offer to freeze or downgrade instead. You don’t have to explain yourself or accept any counteroffer.
Canceling by Certified Mail
If you’ve moved or can’t get to your home club, mail a cancellation letter via USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested. Send it to the home club’s mailing address, not corporate.
Include:
- Your full name as it appears on the account
- Your membership ID number (on your key tag or billing statements)
- The club’s name and location
- Your current contact information
- A clear statement that you are requesting cancellation
- Your signature and the date
Certified mail gives you a tracking number and a signed receipt proving the club received the letter. Allow up to seven business days for processing after delivery. Because of that lag, mail the letter well before the 10th if you want to stop the next billing cycle.
The Two Deadlines That Decide Your Final Charges
The 10th of the month controls your monthly dues. Your home club must have your cancellation in hand by that date to prevent the next draft. Arrive on the 11th and you pay one more month, no refund.1Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ
The 25th of the month before your annual fee is due controls the yearly $49 charge. Every membership includes a $49 annual fee billed once a year, separate from monthly dues. If your annual fee hits in July, cancellation must be processed by June 25 to avoid it. People forget this one because the date rarely matches signup month. Check your original paperwork or ask your club for your annual fee date.1Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ
If You’re on a 12-Month Commitment
Planet Fitness sells both no-commitment memberships and plans with a 12-month commitment, depending on the promotion you signed up under. On a no-commitment plan, you can cancel anytime as long as you respect the billing deadlines above. On a commitment plan, breaking the term early costs a $58 buyout fee. Some franchise locations charge more, so look at your agreement for the exact figure.1Planet Fitness. Customer Service and FAQ
Not sure which you have? Your original signup agreement says so, and the front desk can confirm.
Getting the Buyout Fee Waived
Two situations may get the $58 fee waived: a medical condition that prevents gym use, or a move that puts you far from any Planet Fitness.
For a medical waiver, bring a letter from a licensed doctor on official letterhead. The letter should identify you as a patient, describe the condition in general terms, explain why it prevents you from using the gym, and recommend cancellation. Submit it in person or include it with your certified mail request.
For a relocation waiver, most clubs want proof of your new address (a lease or utility bill) and apply a threshold of roughly 25 miles from the nearest Planet Fitness. The decision is up to the individual franchise manager, so the waiver isn’t automatic, but either circumstance gives you a real basis to ask.
Freeze Instead if the Reason Is Temporary
If you’re canceling because of travel, surgery recovery, or a tight few months, freezing the account may make more sense than closing it. A freeze pauses monthly dues without ending the membership, so you don’t have to re-enroll later.
Standard freezes run one to three months. Medical or military freezes can extend to six months with documentation. Some clubs freeze accounts free; others charge a small monthly hold fee. The annual fee is not paused: if it falls during the freeze window, you’ll still be billed. Call your home club for its specific policy, which varies by franchise.
Don’t Just Stop Paying
Canceling the card or closing the bank account tied to your membership does not cancel the membership. Planet Fitness will keep billing, the charges will fail, and the balance will grow. After 60 to 90 days of missed payments, most clubs send the debt to a third-party collection agency. A collections entry can drop your credit score and stay on your report for seven years from the date of the first missed payment. The formal cancellation process is tedious, but it’s far cheaper than a collections account trailing you for most of a decade.
After You Cancel
Save your cancellation confirmation or certified mail return receipt somewhere you can find it. Check your bank or credit card statements for at least two full billing cycles afterward.
Planet Fitness generally treats processed payments as final and does not refund normal dues. If a charge appears after a confirmed cancellation, start with the club manager and bring your documentation. If the club won’t reverse it, file a dispute with your bank or card issuer. Your confirmation or certified mail receipt is the evidence the bank needs to decide the dispute in your favor.
If You Just Signed Up
Second-guessing a membership you joined this week is a different situation. Many states with gym-specific consumer protection laws give new members a cooling-off period of three to five business days after signing a health club contract, during which you can cancel for any reason and owe nothing beyond what you’ve already paid. Coverage and the number of days vary by state, so check your state’s health club or consumer protection statute if you’re still in the first week.
